Rare 4cats4me Posted May 4, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 4, 2018 I would like to know what the penalty is, if any, if caught photographing one’s own photos in the gallery. On a social media site, an acquaintance is currently posting pics of gallery pics of herself and her group. It’s pretty obvious the pics haven’t been purchased as they’re still in the picture holder with the strings in front. She posted one yesterday and I indicated that she shouldn’t be doing that. Today, another pic of a pic of her and a friend appeared on the social media site. I feel like messaging her and telling her that she will be thrown in the brig or thrown off the ship for doing that, but before I do, I would like input from those who might know what really would happen if caught photographing photos in the gallery. It just ticks me off that she would do this, especially when there is always signage around photo galleries stating No Photography. Maybe I’m just overreacting, but we always pay for our photos. Also, they’re not on Princess but on another major line.

fishywood Posted May 4, 2018 #4 Share Posted May 4, 2018 (edited) If you really want to find out what happens in this case, just forward her postings to Princess' social media sites  On one of Princess' corporate siblings there are not just signs in the photo gallery with a drawing of a camera having the universal 'NO' red circle and slash through it, but a notice threatening severe penalties for those caught doing so. Scuttlebutt is that security has been called on such misceants and repeat offenders put off the ship. But I imagine Princess handles it the same way they handle everything else such as chair hogs, traditional diners showing up to ATD, and sharing of drink packages: better to act like the three monkeys and avoid a confrontation rather than apply the rules fairly and equitably. ETA: I just noticed the OP's postscript that their "friend" is not on Princess. Whichever line they are on, if said line offers an unlimited photo package certainly hopefully the cost of it will magically appear on their account. It always amazes me when I hear or see people who can afford to book a cruise yet are so cheap that they smuggle liquor aboard, stiff the staff out of auto tips, and now pose for photos then take photos of them rather than pay for them. All of that behavior is a type of theft and those who do it lack honor.
Wishing on a star Posted May 4, 2018 #6 Share Posted May 4, 2018 Call the Line, have somebody email you the policy... Forward this policy to said 'acquaintance'. If this person continues with such despicable behavior, then the decision on whether to forward the info and links to the Lines proper authorities might be determined on what kind of 'acquaintance' this happens to be. donaldsc Posted May 4, 2018 #7 Share Posted May 4, 2018 If I was on the ship and saw someone doing this and there was photography staff nearby, I would bring it to their attention. What the person is doing is called stealing. I don't buy photographs and I do consider them absurdly overpriced. However, if I really liked a photo and wanted it, I would pay for it. 1025cruise Posted May 4, 2018 #8 Share Posted May 4, 2018 I've seen staff intervene when necessary. My guess is the staff isn't seeing it to stop it.
neverbeenhere Posted May 4, 2018 #9 Share Posted May 4, 2018 I believe the correct penalty is $19.95 (or the current photo price) per picture taken placed on their shipboard account. At least this is what they threatened on another line when I saw them catch a guy.
antsp Posted May 4, 2018 #10 Share Posted May 4, 2018 Go to Disney and watch everyone taking pictures of the on ride photos. It’s hardly crime of the century
jlp20 Posted May 4, 2018 #11 Share Posted May 4, 2018 OK, let's take a step back and look at what OP wants to do. Not quite a professional photographer, but far from being an amateur. The photography of a print requires special equipment like tripods and special lighting. Those results are good at best. Anything attempted in the gallery would be a snap and shoot situation. ANY RESULTING PHOTO will be poor and not worth the effort
voljeep Posted May 4, 2018 #12 Share Posted May 4, 2018 pretty sure it's the OPs intention to post these on her MySpace page and not have canvas print made to hang in the Louvre
Rare CineGraphic Posted May 4, 2018 #13 Share Posted May 4, 2018 I used to own a gag gift shop. Cell phones with cameras killed my business. People would much rather take a pic of something funny and send it to their friends, versus actually paying for the gift and giving it to them in person. Signage didn’t stop them, and they didn’t care that I had rent to pay, so I shut down the whole thing. Sent from my iPhone while I probably should be working. floridalover5623 Posted May 4, 2018 #14 Share Posted May 4, 2018 My friend got stopped one time. No big deal. They just told her to not take photo's and that was the end of it. I imagine it must happen on every cruise.
RandallFlagg Posted May 4, 2018 #15 Share Posted May 4, 2018 As a one time professional photographer - if the paintings are copyrighted by the Artist - permission is required to "sell" your photographs. Generally speaking, however, if you are simply taking a pic to look at (and nothing else) they won't "generally" mind. But it is somewhat "tacky". If you like the painting - purchase it. You get a piece that you will love in your home and the Artist gets paid. Win - Win. Now, if you are looking at taking pics of the Mona Lisa - you will most likely, be arrested and spend at least one night in jail. :)

Signage didn’t stop them, and they didn’t care that I had rent to pay, so I shut down the whole thing.. It's a pervasive attitude now: Business owners are rich and don't deserve to be rich because they don't actually do anything except profit off the fruits of others' labor. Therefore, it's OK to steal from them or "put one over on THE MAN", and it's offensive if they raise the price of something because they're obviously just trying to squeeze more out of the little man. :(

neverbeenhere Posted May 4, 2018 #20 Share Posted May 4, 2018 Once everything goes digital that will end I would think. Nope... Just like graduation photo proofs, some will still take a picture of the digital screen with the “proof statement” super imposed over the photo. :(
Rare broberts Posted May 4, 2018 #21 Share Posted May 4, 2018 If you have contact information for the photography company you can let them know of the probable copyright violation. It in turn can make a copyright violation claim with the web site where the posts appear. The web site can then take down the pictures. While most people don't think about it, copying pictures and posting the result is nothing less than theft unless the original photographer has given permission. getting older slowly Posted May 5, 2018 #23 Share Posted May 5, 2018 Nope. Non-flash pictures are allowed for non-commercial purposes. True a lot of art galleries and museums let you take non flash, hand held photos. It is a bit of storm in a tea cup, as now almost everybody has a camera on their phone, which seam to be attached to the users hand If princess didn't charge so much, they would sell more, but to print them all out, surely it would be easier and cheaper to show them on a screen, as they are all digital and look at the saving in paper and chemicals and time .
