I think what I am leery about in Eden are the characters walking around and asking for participation and in one video I saw, role playing.  Being an introvert and a geek at that, I don't like role playing or similar activities at all.  Like you, we will not go to dinner but go with an open mind and spend time having some drinks and checking out the place.

Hi Bo. I think they were referring to fare discounts. Royal Caribbean offers sustantial fare discounts to Crown & Anchor members, depending upon their loyalty level. Celebrity offers a one catagory upgrade within a room type, which does not amount to as much.

Yes, the one (1) category upgrade is not significant, really, but something.

 

Not sure what the current strategy for this is, but it has existed for some time though.

 

A great reason I do not book traditionally, as I can get some great rates, which I value over additional OBC, although anytime I can get a good mix of both, that is very welcomed to be sure.

i think someone else answered  your inquiry , but Yes..EDEN  is not for us.....right from the initial PR for the restaurant and show reveals which featured snakes and very hedonistic  imagery. The interactive concept  is not appealing, and loud music and lighting also a negative.  We have been through several iterations of the same on X  over many years...and were glad to see them  all go.

 

I expected the Show in the EDEN restaurant would stay in the restaurant and not involve those just hanging out in EDEN..which looks lovely. We do not want to see the creatures  roaming the main EDEN area or the ship in general.....why not keep the bar/ EDEN restaurnt open during the day and keep the Edenists in there?

 

A new concern recently  arose with reports that loud music from the show is played on large speakers outside EDEN..and have been heard on Sunset Veranda balconies and inside....the crescendo  apparently build ups to midnight.  

 

We are booked in an SV on Deck 7 for Nov,  right over Eden and the speakers,  so we are tracking the issue...we will check it out  on our Jan cruise.  If a big deal noise  issue, we will sadly move our cabin ..or worse yet cancel..

Go back and read the reviews from the first month the MSC Seaside sailed and you'd think it was the worst ship in the history of mankind. Then compare it to the reviews now and it's completely different.

 

New ships are going to have issues. There's no getting around it. The crew is new. The layout is new. Everything that could possibly go wrong is going to go wrong the first month or so. If you go and sail on a brand new ship then you should know there's going to be lots of hiccups.

 

Having said that, I read about a dozen of the reviews and it seems like the ship isn't what the typical Celebrity demographic is accustomed to. I had a friend sail on the maiden voyage and he said the average age was VERY elevated. Everyone was complaining that the ship was more geared towards a younger crowd so they weren't too happy.

 

Celebrity should advertise the Edge as their party ship so that word gets out and people have more realistic expectations. Also, i've noticed the prices on the Edge are astronomical. I get it that at first they're higher but we're talking double the price of other ships and most people won't justify all that extra $$$ just to go on a new ship. A few hundred bucks more maybe...but not double.

 

I expect Celebrity to slash prices on Edge sailings REALLY soon.

The majority of us on Celebrity are introverts, from my observations.  At the same time, I think Eden would be even less appealing to your average extravert.  Can you imagine a Nascar suite, dressed up like Eden, with Edonists playing with magic invisible balls, near the bleachers?

This is very true. Friend of mine just got off the edge and he loved every minute of the cruise! Friend and wife are in their 30s, they represent a group who are into IG, snapchat, fast fashion, Japanese whiskies, banksy arts, new iphones, drones, and bubble teas. He was fascinated with Eden, MC, the contemporary interior decor, the live band, and the hip martini bar. Funny how someone complained about not having a band that plays Beatles songs while others like my friend was enjoying green day and nirvana on board.

 

Apparently he is a complete opposite of the complainers who (no offence to anyone) like to read books quietly, chat and drink tea in a classy ambience, enjoy lush curtains and wood furnishing, and love to mingle and talk life stories with fellow cruisers 🙂

 

 It’s just hard to please both groups at the same time, just saying.

I don't think the key problem with the Edge is getting their on-board programs running better or any initial "hiccups".   The Key Issue is the cabin design, specifically the IV balcony.   The IV balcony is too small and the furniture is too small to be used as a conventional balcony. The cabin is too small too be used as a conventional cabin without utilizing the balcony space.  These are inherent design features and can't be fixed on this ship design.  I haven't seen reviews on any inside or ocean view cabins but if they are the same size cabin as the IV cabins without the balcony, they must be incredibly cramped.  This design is only beneficial to cold weather cruises.  Look for these ships to be moved to Alaska, the Baltic and cruise year round from northern cities like New York.  I will be surprised if Celebrity builds more than 2 ships with the Edge designed cabins.  The Edge cabin design appears to be a failed concept.  When people think of the "E" in Edge, they will think of the Edsel.

Celebrity have made a huge blunder with the IV cabins and it’s one they can’t fix, because it can’t be fixed. They have designed and built a ship with a sister to come that is not suitable for any warm weather cruises, that a pretty big part of the cruise industry. I would add to a degree that also applies to the pool area design regarding shade with warm weather cruising ( the S class ships have it spot on in that regard where the direction of the sun makes little difference). They can tinker with Eden and get it right over time along with many other aspects but the cabins they have are the cabins they will always have.

There is a substantial difference in terms of "pleasing" these two groups (millennials and X veterans).

Older cruisers are ALREADY here (Egde, S or M ships), while X is TRYING to win millennials so far.

Replacing traditional cruising features with something that supposed to TARGET a different population is a risky strategy; let's see how it would work out.

On board the Edge now and this cruise is far better than our Reflection cruise last July. The whole ship is refreshingly different.

I like the IV cabin and accept you can't escape from the daylight if your room mate wants to go on the veranda. It's also impossible to bring down the blind and shut the folding doors without juggling the furniture around.

Last night was baked Alaska and thankfully no stupid parade with waving napkins.

Nice to see many people dressing Chicly too.

btw I'm in my late 50's and don't feel in the slightest that Celebrity want to alienate me with their Edge concept

At least Hershey can fix the process and produce kisses with complete tips, Celebrity can't fix the design flaws in the IV balconies.

To be sure, since I Am in my 60's I rather enjoy most of the activities (as cited) the people in their 30's enjoy and as well, more quiet things (as cited) with the exception of Beatles type music which I just barely tolerate, generally.

 

Maybe, I Am along with friends of a similar age and time who cruise with us are anomalies in X's world and 'demographics'?

 

Who knows for sure and I do not really care, just as long as we enjoy ourselves overall on the sailings.

Is this a common problem with other hospitality and travel industries?  How about the other cruise lines?  I see Millennials and Baby Boomers on Delta flights, at Hyatt, Sheraton, Hampton Inn, Hockey Games, Mumford and Sons concerts, Outback Steakhouse, Casinos, Theme Parks...  Sure there are differences, but when you have to ask this type of question, which generation to target and which to snub, you might be on the wrong track entirely.

As I said previously, you have a personal interest on the payroll so it would sway your opinions. I don’t blame you in the slightest as I would be exactly the same if either of my sons were working on board the ship 😉.

I’m surprised you thought your cabin was smaller than “conventional cabins”.  We felt the C2 we stayed in was the same size as an S class similar cabin.  Edge cabins have 244 total sq ft vs 248 on S class.  The Edge bathroom was superior.

I'm glad the cabin worked for you but the bulk of the reviews seem to indicate otherwise.  There seems to be a trend that people need to move stuff to the balcony to have adequate room in the cabin and a trend that the bifold doors need to be left open for adequate space.

I agree with Esprit's assessment, the ship is indeed refreshingly different and we also enjoyed it more than our last cruise on Reflection (which we have sailed 5 times). There are a few minor things which I know could be improved, but overall I am happy that X has created this new class of ship that will, going forward, keep our cruising experience from becoming “stale“. Different strokes for different folks... 😊

Maybe, just maybe this is one of the many posts which tries to validate their 'disdain/dislike' for The Edge based only on what they have read from those who believe similarly.

 

Thank you for posting the schematics/drawings for both, some of us can tell distinctly when there is 4 sq' missing from a space and others of us cannot or find it barely perceptible, pending on how the 4 sq' is parsed.

This is a ridiculous comparison. People have said they need to move things around when opening and closing the bifold doors which don’t exist on Reflection.
