But it didn't cost anything for that bartender to say "happy birthday".  Maybe they can't give a cake or flowers to everyone, but they can acknowledge it.

No it didn't and it was actually nice of her to acknowledge it on her own. She made a big deal of it with the other bar tenders. It was better than a forced Happy Birthday song and a slice of cake with a candle. We just happened to be on board for her actual birth date so I guess the information caught her eye.

Isn't more about the thought than the gift?

Yes and having to ask a waiter to acknowledge an occasion defeats the purpose. All of the cruise lines ask if you are celebrating an occasion during the booking or while filling out the cruise planner. The only line that did anything to acknowledge our occasion was Princess.

Agree, why even ask? It just sets people up for disappointment if they are looking forward to something special, even if it is just an acknowledgement.

I have ordered a special package for a birthday or anniversary for members of our family.  Years ago, Celebrity also decorated the stateroom or suite- now no more-  Actually royal still offers special occasion packages.  As suggested, ok to decorate yourself

We had one butler who made a beautiful sign herself and hug it-

I am taking my tap dance teacher on her first ever cruise ion November. She will celebrate her 86th birthday on our last port day. I've noted it in our reservation--but will have to wait and see if anything wonderful happens for her. I hope so--it would make a beautiful ending for her first cruise.

If you are in a suite you may get a call from the Shoreside concierge depending on the suite grade, this is something they can deal with. You can ask you butler/ room steward when on board or the Retreat Manager I'm sure they will be able to assist.

A friend had a birthday on our TA

Her son order the birthday celebration from the website , and it wasn’t done , she was just as happy it wasn’t done 🤣

We did order her a cake , it was about $30  , it was big enough for our table of 11

it was delicious

Did they also decorate the stateroom?

Anniversaries and Birthdays celebrated at sea are meaningful and it seems all diners in the room enjoy the serving staff singing at the 'honourees' table. Although we've mentioned our b'day and anniversary in each booking made over many years, the experience has skipped over us;  that is, until the suite life...then a lovely effort was made to decorate the cabin with balloons and petals on our bed.  A card with flowers, chocolate strawberries, and champagne appeared signed by 'the cabin staff'.  I asked who sent this, response was "It's from us...".   This was very nice, however it was our son who had paid for the Anniversary package!  I never had the heart to tell him the staff took the credit. I think any special marking of your personal event is dependent on the TA or X rep making the reference on your booking.

It’s not fair unless we sing to every table that has a special occasion.  What are the words to “Happy Anniversary” again?

Maybe a group sing-a-long would work much better!  Or one an hour...LOL.  I do have to add, when they sang to us it was a choral group sing and some part of it in their particular language.  Very enjoyable.

Our butler set this up for us on our 15th anniversary on Silhouette.  We didn't tell her it was our anniversary but she found out because DH lost his wedding band literally on our anniversary.  He was in the room looking for it while I was in the casino...at that point, I was unaware.  He happened into our butler and explained.  She proceeded to help him in the search.  This showed up later in the day.

On our cruise last April on the Apex, we celebrated our 16th anniversary.  I brought a "Happy Anniversary" banner from home and hung it on our stateroom wall.  Our attendant asked when it was, and we told him it was that day.  When we returned from dinner that evening, we had a swan towel on the bed, rose petals strewn about, various chocolate desserts and a bottle of champagne on ice with a lovely card from him.  I guess the point being that just noting something on your reservation really doesn't do much, and it is probably up to the whims of your stateroom attendant whether anything actually gets done.

I think this is so hit and miss ... clearly by the responses here.

On my recent cruise (April), my birthday was noted by my travel partner as 'special occasion' and a date was selected to represent, my actually birthday was not during the cruise but shortly after.  I didn't go expecting anything.  Nothing actually happened in any restaurant on 'the day', we had a dinner at Eden and it was like any other day which was fine.  I was surprised, however, to have a bottle of wine appear in my stateroom (can't recall what it was but it was pink and not champagne) with a note wishing me happy birthday and I think it was from guest services.  Was a very nice gesture and totally unexpected, I'm sadly not a wine drinker so it went unopened and perhaps passed along to the next celebration 🙂

For reference I was in an Infinite Veranda on Edge, not in a suite.

I agree with others that this really should not be asked as it might lead to expectations.  I had none but that's because I live on Cruise Critic LOL.
