My oldest granddaughter will be finishing her first year of college next week. She is in an Honors program.Due to the fact that her grades have been excellent she is being given the opportunity to spend her Junior year of college at a university in either the UK or Australia.

Congratulations to your granddaughter!  Does she have a preference if she decides to go during her Junior year?

My grandson Chris, who is finishing his Sophomore year at Villanova,  will be heading to Rome for 4 weeks, and then 4 weeks in Paris for Summer College classes;  he'll be leaving next month.  What a lucky kid..I'm jealous!

Great stuff, I hope he continues to enjoy the experience.

A lack of a professional league has kept Rugby as a fringe sport but that is starting to change.  North America has a long way to go in developing a profession game but Major League Rugby seems to have found it's footing and a professional league this side of both oceans will only improve the quality of play locally. With the Rugby World Cup being held in the USA 2031 I expect that that will continue to grow exponentially.

Owen has a tourney on Tuesday, weather permitting.  On the 18th of May Owen and his team are heading to Mississauga to play a game and after the game they are hosted to a dinner with the team that they just played. Then they are head to see the Toronto Arrows play Old Glory DC.  They have a meet and greet with any of the non dressing players prior to the game. Toronto’s record isn’t great but it will be a great experience for the boys.

Too funny.  We had a wicked smart basset hound (emphasis on wicked).    We had to put a baby lock on the drawer that held our garbage can.  He sat and watched us until he finally figured out how to open it.  He was sooo smart, but only used it for evil.

The first lock we had on the cabinet where the garbage can lives was a large carabiner clip through the handles.  Dexter figured that out in a couple of days!

A month ago, Andrew fell and bent his wrist backwards while playing soccer. The swelling was an odd shape, and the pain level was high. We attempted to go to urgent care for a quick x-ray, but they were already closed (at 8:00 p.m., seriously??). So off to the ER we went - because the last time we blew off an injury and did the "wait and see", he actually had a bad fracture. So yeah. We were "those people". No break this time, so I guess they all probably thought we were stupid for going in, but we didn't want to make that mistake again.

No, a possible broken bone is absolutely a reason to go to the ER, especially when urgent care isn't an option.  There's always a chance of losing use of the limb if it's not getting good blood flow or if there's nerve compression, or of injuring it further if it's not properly immobilized.

Nobody would look down on you for coming to the ER for that, ESPECIALLY on a child!!!!

I'll be looking forward to you posting updates on Owens progress.  Even though I'm a few years removed from being active, I'm still passionate about the sport and love to hear about new players embracing it.

Debi, glad your training has gone well.

Sometimes, a doctor during hours, will tell a patient to go to the ER instead of coming into the office.

I once had an insurance deny my claim when it was 2am and I had chest pains and went to the ER.  The reason for the denial was that I should have waited to see my doctor.  I don't think so.

My daughter once had trouble breathing so we took her to an urgent care facility after hours.  Claim was denied because we didn't go to an ER instead.

I can't imagine going to an ER with the aches and pains you mentioned.

In all my various inpatient hospital stays, I don't recall a post-stay survey.  I never had negative issues.

Yes, insurance agencies need to get out of the business of practicing medicine... unfortunately, they're in the business of taking money and not paying it back out again, so they try to refuse payment on as many claims as possible.

As for doctors sending patients to the ER instead of coming into the office, I'm guessing that the offices don't leave any open appointments in their schedule for same-day sick visits.  It's a shame, though, because the care they get at the ER isn't any different than the care at the doc's office, but the cost difference is extreme.

Wow, you all a wonderful group!

Caring for one another with grace and love.  Learning names.  Great thread.

Late to the party (as always it seems) and grateful for your positive comments, I've found I just can't keep up.  I'm a bit jealous, but think my presence just dilutes the beauty that you all have.

My best regards to all, I'll sign off, and leave a song that I just apply to myself but hope you enjoy as well.  I can still observe 😌

I think the care is sometimes very different between the two locations. Many issues are much better taken care of in the office with a physician who knows you and your history. ERs use far more imaging and lab work and that is for various, and understandable, reasons but it doesn't necessarily translate to good care.

We always leave room for sick and urgent visits every day. I'd rather have an empty slot than have to turn away a patient that needs my help.

As NYC Retirees, we are in the midst of losing our Healthcare benefits that were promised to every NYC worker when we retired.  Long story short, many of our Union leaders have sold us out, and the City is trying to force us into Aetna Advantage, which is noted for doing exactly what you just said, Debbie.  Aetna Advantage is trying to tell us most of our doctors take their plan (most of our doctors don't), and the list goes on and on.  Jim and I have doctors and specialists in NYC, N.J., and Florida, where we can make appointments, go for tests, etc.

I don't think you are diluting anything... and... keeping up is close to impossible.☺️ Oh, and VERY cool song, thanks!

Your patients are very fortunate to have a caring physician.

I finished seeding the front lawn, just minutes before the rains began this morning!

It has been pouring here for hours.  The weekend looks like a complete washout.  I was hoping to do some seeding of front lawn and put down our turf builder too.

We need more doctors like you in this world today.  Thank you for all you do, the care you show for your patients is very obvious, thank you.

We are in SC for a bit over 5 years officially, on my 3rd PCP in the same practice, one left and the other moved to another office.  All were good so can't complain on that front but would really like to develop somewhat of a relationship with one of them.  At least I have a DR, many practices are running at close to a year wait for new patients.  The older population here needs doctors and the medical infrastructure is truly lacking.

Total joy!  Yes, it's hard to keep up at times.  Please do the best you can and stick around.

I disagree about the dilution effect -- as I always say, there can never be too much love in your life!

Don't worry about keeping up -- there is no expectation here that everyone will always read, react, and reply to each and every message.  I've never seen anyone's nose get bent out of joint because someone didn't "like" their post or respond with thoughts/prayers at a post about a hardship one is experiencing.

I think that's part of the reason why this thread keeps on going -- we're all just here to support each other, share our joys, and share some laughs (even if those laughs land us in CC Jail!).  Egos get checked at the door on this thread.

I totally agree about the need to develop a relationship with a PCP, and everyone gets instructions to follow up with their PCP after their ER visit.  We also have a handout of PCPs in the area who are accepting new patients, for those who don't have an established relationship already.

I wish more doctors would do that!  So many people do call their PCP and just get told to come to the ER because they don't have any open appointments (or they just don't want to deal with the patient).

And going back to our discussion on the word "provider" from last week, I found another reason for the change in terminology.  When I'm rooming a patient in the ER, I don't necessarily know if they'll be seen by a physician (MD or DO) or a mid-level (PA or NP).  So as I'm leaving, I say, "A provider will be in to see you shortly."  That way I'm not misrepresenting the mid-level if that's the person getting assigned to see the patient.

This always steams my shorts.... if you have benefits at retirement that are promised, the employer should not be able to make any changes to that.  Most folks give a significant portion of their life over to their employer -- you DESERVE those benefits that you worked for!

I am just figuring out this Medicare stuff, but I don't see how they can force you into an Advantage plan. I really dislike HMO's. I purchased a Medigap plan G, and a drug plan, part D. They are really cheap, compared to what my prior subsidized insurance cost. Advantage plans aren't accepted nationwide, so it doesn't make any sense that it would be in your best interest.
