Irrawaddy River?

Absolutely correct.
Was on the government boat which took 13 hrs to travel downriver from Mandalay to Bagan. Regular stops were made on route to transfer cargo, carried on heads generally, to waiting bullock carts.

I really do not know, it was dark when both boarding and disembarking.

It was sold simply as “the government boat”

At the time the fare was 50us dollars, locals paid a tenth of that.

I love "government boats/ferries", versus tourist boats, where you see locals going about their daily lives.

Got it, you have earned yourself a plate of sausages, a bowl of goulash and a stein of beer.

We were there 2 years ago (today) and had a fabulous time.

We went to Munich the week before Oktoberfest. We had a great time at the Hofbrauhaus, I have never been in a beer hall that big before or since. What a great time. We chose to miss Oktoberfest because there are way too many people who being way too stupid at Oktoberfest. Lynn really doesn't like crowds, Hofbrauhaus was about as big of a crowd that she could handle.
