Where in the world ?

Now as promised in my previous post, here are a few more Cunard ports to add to our unseen ports list.

Algiers, Algeria

Bizerte, Tunisia

Merok, Norway

Milford Haven, Wales

Syros, Greece

Tarawa, Kiribati

I have an idea one of our frequent contributors to this thread just might have a photo of one of these locations. 😉

There's one more port I've found but I'm keeping that for myself to contribute a bit later since it's a place I've visited.

Here is another public domain image of a place I've visited but don't have my own photo to contribute. This could be a bit of a challenge since it's not on our unseen ports list. I only recently discovered it has been a Cunard port in the past. But given the details in the image to investigate (including the water tower, bridges and cranes), I imagine someone will be able to identify this one.

Probably not a grand testament to my travels in that I recognized (or at least thought I did) the industrial waterfront easier than the lighthouse. It looks to me to be Dalian (Liaoning Province), China.

Correct, well done @ExArkie!    I had a similar reaction when I saw the photo on wikimedia - "Dalian has a lighthouse?  Who knew?"  😃

Every one of my trips there was in Dalian's wintertime, and December and January typically are well below 0c.  Coming from Australia summer or from Hong Kong or Shanghai, where it was much warmer, I always froze.

I was very happy to find a water tower that I thought matched, but then it turned out to be in Centerville Ohio, near Dayton.  A very long way from a Cunard port.  I'll try again later on today.

Found!  This is Portland, Oregon.  The water tower is at the corner of North Blandena Ave and North Denver Ave.  The port facility is the Vigor Shipyard.  And the two bridges are the Burlington Northern Railroad lift bridge and the St. Johns bridge over the Willamette River.

The railroad lift bridge was the key clue for me which led to this port.

I think this makes a Cunard port triple, with Portland England and Portland Maine.  We have a Portland VIC here in Australia, west of Melbourne, that was the site of Victoria's first permanent European settlement.  But I don't think we can get a port quadruple from that location.

I wish there were an “educational” button in addition to the others, because I learn something new every day on this thread. Thank you.

Yes indeed, that's Portland Oregon. It's listed on a 6-night "Pacific Coastal" Sagafjord itinerary for June 1990 (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Victoria, Vancouver). You may recall we previously discussed whether Portland, Oregon has been a Cunard port to make that port name triple. Now we know that it has.

I didn't know this before, but there is an unincorporated community named Portland in my home state of Iowa among the many places named Portland around the world. According to Wikipedia, Portland, Oregon has the distinction of being "the largest city in the world named Portland".

I've been searching wikimedia for appropriate pictures of the few remaining ports on our unseen list that I've been to.  I've tried to find photos of port facilities, ships, or places/buildings with a nautical theme or historical importance.  Sometimes the photos are way too hard to find, and I've struggled to locate them on google maps even knowing the port.

Here's a port where I found two photos, one of the shipping pier that might provide cargo crane clues, and the other of several historical city buildings in the area where the port was first founded.  In google street view there have been some recent changes in the signage on the buildings.

A hint is that this is another "outsourcing" city.

Correct!  A much warmer port than my previous post of Dalian China.  I've only gotten to Chennai twice, on India business trips that included Delhi and Bangalore.

The second photo is of historical buildings in the George Town / Parry's Corner area of Chennai, where the city started in the mid 1600s.  The area was named "George Town" by the British in 1911, in honour of King George V when he was crowned as Emperor of India.

I think it would probably be a bit unfair for me to identify this one right away since it might have been me who identified it in that photo you posted in another thread. I'll work on North West Newbie's photo this morning instead.

I found what appears to be a match to that blue railing in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, Wales. I haven't actually been there (Swansea is as close as I've been), but it is on the previously-unseen port list.

Correct that's Milford Haven, I hadn't realised it was a Cunard port but google tells me that Texaco chartered Mauretania in 1964 to bring guests to the opening of their new oil refinery.

I haven't been able to find any photos of her but I'll keep looking, I should think she was impressive sight.

Here's another one showing a variety of craft on the Haven.

Impressive sight!

The voyage I found a few days ago to add Milford Haven as a Cunard port was a July 21 - August 4, 1990 cruise by Vistafjord. That was listed as an "Around U.K. Special Cunard 150th Anniversary Cruise." The itinerary for that cruise was Hamburg, Amsterdam, Zeebrugge, Plymouth, Cobh, Milford Haven, Spithead Review, Southampton, London, Leith (Edinburgh), Kirkwall, Lerwick, Hamburg.

Incidentally, I've completely lost track of this thread, so I've probably missed it, but  among all these exotic destinations, have we had a picture of London's Surrey Docks, where the A class ships sailed from between the wars?

@Colin_Cameron contributed this photo of Greenwich and then followed up with the second photo showing one of the Sea Goddesses sailing under Tower Bridge to generically represent the port of London.

I currently have this listed as "London (Greenwich)" on our Cunard ports list.

We also have Tilbury listed as a separate port on that list.

I have no objection to including Surrey Docks as well if you have a photo to contribute. I have to admit I don't think I have heard of Surry Docks before this so I'm glad to learn about its history as a Cunard port.

We ought to have room to list both Greenwich and Surrey Docks on our ports list. After all, we have Manhattan, Brooklyn and Bayonne listed as separate ports serving New York City.

The Surrey and Commercial Docks were a major dock complex in SE London, from where Cunard operated an intermediate TA service between the wars with five A Class liners, Alaunia etc. The ships mainly were sunk in WW2. The docks closed in the 1970s, and several were filled in. At present I have found pictures of the ships and of the docks but not of a ship in the docks. Will resume after dinner.

There are numerous photos online of old Cunard ships at the George V docks, roughly where the south side of the runway at London City Airport is now. I think it’s close enough to Greenwich to call it the same port.

Since I've offered to add Surrey Docks to our Cunard ports list for @exlondoner, should we now also consider adding the King George V docks you mentioned earlier @Colin_Cameron?
