dogs4fun Posted May 18, 2021 #4251 Share Posted May 18, 2021 Over to @Coral (as she actually named the river and lock). Or, wildcard, if Coral has no photo. @Canal archive - I wonder where one would find the deepest lock in the world? I’ll bet you know. ☺️
Canal archive Posted May 18, 2021 #4252 Share Posted May 18, 2021 Challenge accepted, it’s in Kazakhstan the Oskemen Lock rise and fall of 138foot 42metres. That’s huge. This year is the 200th anniversary of the death of John Rennie the engineer who built our canal he also built ‘London Bridge’ the one that’s now in Lake Havasu City. dogs4fun Posted May 18, 2021 #4254 Share Posted May 18, 2021 Great photo & beautiful, cloudless blue sky! I remember this castle gate & found the castle museum very interesting. Too bad that I don't recall much of what I learned. 😔
Rare notamermaid Posted May 19, 2021 Author #4255 Share Posted May 19, 2021 You are looking away from the main attraction I gather. This is the entrance gate. Attributes of war are placed on the pillars. A large city with river and bridge in the background. It does not look German to me. Somewhere further downstream on the Danube? notamermaid
Rare jpalbny Posted May 19, 2021 #4256 Share Posted May 19, 2021 I was thinking that the topography looked a lot like the Danube near Budapest. Turns out that I was not far off, and I've actually been here. Just not this exact part of this particular attraction.

I have spoken with others who have been on different lines and their tours did not take them here. There are 2 gates - one on either side. So the main attraction is in the center. Our river cruise tour didn't go here either. But Chris and I made a run for it during our short period of free time,, and toured around the outside area for a few minutes, before we had to catch the bus back to our ship.

Daisi Posted May 20, 2021 #4264 Share Posted May 20, 2021 If I'm correct, I'll call a wild card....looks like a storm is on it's way, so shutting everything down. It's so hot out here that if we do get one, it could be wicked.
Rare knoxclone Posted May 21, 2021 #4265 Share Posted May 21, 2021 Yep - @Daisiwinner winner chicken dinner! wild card it is.
jklc123 Posted May 21, 2021 #4266 Share Posted May 21, 2021 Here's one on an excursion from a popular river cruise. Name the river and what it is -- exact place not necessary.
vada_9 Posted May 21, 2021 #4267 Share Posted May 21, 2021 I have no idea where this is but could it be a sundial?
jklc123 Posted May 21, 2021 #4268 Share Posted May 21, 2021 Not a sundial. Interesting guess.
Rare notamermaid Posted May 21, 2021 Author #4269 Share Posted May 21, 2021 I think it depicts a typical beach scene in a place that has no beach, it being a field or meadow. A former coastline? No idea where. notamermaid
dogs4fun Posted May 21, 2021 #4270 Share Posted May 21, 2021 (edited) Looks like the boy is holding a starfish. Possibly looking for shells? Definitely a stumper to me - no clue whatsoever. Edited May 21, 2021 by dogs4fun
Rare notamermaid Posted May 21, 2021 Author #4271 Share Posted May 21, 2021 Starfish - that was what prompted me to think it is supposed to be a beach scene: "look what I have found, mummy!" I would love to be at a pebbles beach now... I will have a guess: somewhere in the Netherlands? notamermaid
jklc123 Posted May 21, 2021 #4272 Share Posted May 21, 2021 Clues needed. It’s not close to a beach. On a road from a small river port to famous, historic beaches. Not the Netherlands, but in that general area of Europe.
dogs4fun Posted May 21, 2021 #4273 Share Posted May 21, 2021 Famous, historic beaches being the Normandy beaches? Rhone or Seine cruise?
Canal archive Posted May 21, 2021 #4274 Share Posted May 21, 2021 (edited) It’s got to be something about the story of the boy with the starfish, which I know but did not know there was a statue. CA Tried to attach the legend but failed abysmaly. Edited May 21, 2021 by Canal archive
Rare notamermaid Posted May 21, 2021 Author #4275 Share Posted May 21, 2021 I think this may be the original story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Thrower#The_original_story Not exactly a lovely children's story it seems, but adapted for children in later versions. The original fits the idea of beaches, the living and the dead better. I think you must be on the right track there. Cannot find a reference to a location, though. notamermaid
