First the docking location, a hand throw from Grote Markt.

I had a real problem finding my ship in Antwerp (our embarkation port) because nobody bothered to mention that the ship was behind the parking garage.

Now that you mention it, our driver made two passes by where the ship was supposed to be. He didn’t see the ship, drove into the garage, got out of the car, and looked over the wall and got a similar view.

Useless trivia ... Albert Einstein sailed on Red Star Lines.

I remember reading about the Red Star Lines and White Star Lines in reference to the Titanic. I believe Red Star Lines assets were bought by Holland America after they declared bankruptcy.

That's really funny - considering the statue in Grote Markt is of Brabo throwing the hand of Antigoon (a slain giant) into the river! I posted that very statue here in this game a long while back.

We didn't make it to this museum when we visited Antwerp (via ocean ship, on Silversea). We took the train to Bruges instead. Saved about an hour to wander back through Antwerp in the evening light, from the train station to the dock. Very pretty but will have to go back for a proper visit.

Antwerp, from Werpen=to throw in Dutch . . . Ant, short for  Hand=hand? Anvers sure doesn’t fit.

I would actually tend to go with the Wikipedia entries in both English and German (they are very similar in this case): an de werp or something similar, or something Latin, in any case, something to do with people on the warf or on the banks, which refers to the geography of the settlement and area. Sounds pretty probable, we have tons of such names around here that make no sense now, but are kind of remnants of Medieval or dialect words. Even weird evolvements from Latin like Cologne from Colonia (and the rest of the long name).

So, there are several? I do not know these. The material looks riveted, is it metal plates? In the background there are cables that look to belong to a suspension bridge. Which does not help me really as there are quite a few of those around.

They are the Kelpies erected to commemorate the work horses, usually Shires or Suffolk Punch heavy horses that pulled the cargo barges in Scotland before powered barges were invented. Your correct there are two, here they are. It was a dour day when we were there.

I think these may have been posted earlier on this thread, or I came across them when researching Scotland. I have not seen them in person but knew right away what they were.
