Given the wording of the latest onboard mask update will smoking still be allowed in the casinos?

Logically smoking and drinking is much the same when wearing a mask.  In fact there was a sip and mask policy reported on cruise critic recently.

Can't quite agree there.  What you drink doesn't affect me but blowing smoke in my direction does.

The last time we cruised on a ship with casino smoking was on Freedom of the Seas several years ago.  It was so off-putting that we haven't considered a Royal Caribbean trip since.  Had I realized it might be a problem on our upcoming Princess cruises we may not have booked them.

Smoking in the casino on Princess is restricted to small specific areas.  They also have air extractor and conditioner units. I do not believe you are going to sit immediately in front of a smoker.  Gambling has always been associated with smoking and drinking in general society.

Do you know if there are certain open decks where smoking is allowed?   On the Majestic, we have cabin E-429 on the starboard side of the  hump with small area of deck space below.   Wouldn't enjoy our balcony if smoking is allowed right below us.  On Celebrity smoking is allowed only the Port side.

Thanks!

The smoking area will be on the starboard aft patio on deck 7. The area if well away from your cabin and will not effect your mid ship cabin. Princess does not specify smoking areas by sides of the ship. They are all specific small areas.

Casino smoking on Princess ships is restricted to a certain cluster of slots and is for those playing. Smoking at table games, the casino bar or other areas of the casino is not permitted.

As a life time non smoker I don't like the policy, but I don't find it too annoying. I don't spend much time in the casino anyway, maybe a half hour at the late evening craps table or a few pulls at the slots.

We'll see how that works.  I've been in casinos before with similar restrictions and it didn't make much difference.

Restricting to players could make a big difference.  When we encountered this on Freedom of the Seas smokers were restricted to an area near the casino entrance.  On one rainy sea day there were over 20 there so they overflowed the designated area.  There was also a circular straircase to the next deck that acted like a chimney.  It was almost funny to be on that deck and see the smoke rising from below.

This discussion reminds me of when I used to smoke and restaurants had a smoking and non-smoking section.  If there was a wait for a table in the non-smoking section, some non-smoking patrons would request a table in the smoking section in order to avoid the wait and then complain about the smoke.

If smoking is such a problem for a person then they shouldn't go to places where smoking is permitted.  If the casino would empty out because non-smokers wouldn't enter, the smoking rules in the casino would likely change.  But there must be a reason why that's not happening.

I'm now a non-smoker but the presence of smoke in the casino doesn't prevent me from having a good time in there.  Everybody has different levels of tolerance.

This is what frustrates me so very much! True, I have never smoked and so I am very sensitive and can smell smoke even when our next door neighbor is outside or in his garage smoking.

The smoke MOVES around and TRAVELS! It does not stay and float around the smoker's head. AND, this same smoke carries to other non- smokers via air.

These are some excerpts from a "Scientific American" from 2009. This has been known for quite a while.

"Cigarettes contain hundreds of different strains of bacteria, including many human pathogens that may play a role in lung diseases and respiratory infections, new research shows.

"Most health research has focused on the impact of chemicals in cigarettes and the particulates that are produced when tobacco is burned. But a new study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, paints the most complete picture to date of the bacteria in tobacco, suggesting that the germs could be another potential source of infection and disease.

"The research--which shows that smokers are inhaling live bacteria--is the first time cigarettes have been implicated as a source of potentially pathogenic microbes."

So, we mask up after we have been vaccinated, but the ship permits obvious and documented bacteria to waft through the ship from indoor and outdoor smoking areas. The cigarettes bring enough bacteria in and the smoker spreads it. It is not contained in the casino or outdoor smoking areas.

Yes, my mother died at age 52 from lung cancer.

Remember the Cone of Silence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cone_of_Silence_(Get_Smart)) from the series Get Smart.  Maybe they should install a Cone of Smoke Free over machines in the casinos so that people who have to smoke in the casino don't totally contaminate the place.

We'll find out how efficient the air extractor is on our November Sky trip.  It may prove not to be an issue at all, though my past experience (not on Princess) gives me doubts.  Thanks to all for your comments.

I look forward to your report

It has been like that on every cruise line I have been on except for NCL. On the NCL Bliss they had a separate smoking area (with machines) in the casino that was closed off with doors.

There is a thread on the Emerald Princess transiting the Panama Canal.  According to to that thread there is no smoking or tournaments in the casino due to Covid.  Of course, we are over a month out so who knows what the status will be then.

Yes, they are allowing smoking in the Casino.  It’s listed under the enhanced health protocol in the casino… Makes perfect sense to me.

Next time switch to Celebrity, then. Their casinos are smoke free

imo cruise ships can have it both ways  ,all they need do is to have a  glassed in smoking section with all sorts of  smoke extracting machines & another area for non smokers   .It takes investing into the proper equipment   .The cocktail servers  can wear special masks  to protect them
