I am in a similar boat.  Cancer treatment will be >1 year away from our cruise in November.  Which companies are you considering?  Cheers!

If I were you I would not even mention the cancer (death is not going to happen on your cruise)

Cheers Carole

But you are in big strife if you fall ill from other causes before or during the cruise. First thing the insurance company want if you submit a claim is your full medical history from your GP/Specialists. If you have not disclosed all you prexisting conditions they will wipe you. Trust me, speaking from experience.  So declare all, or else.

I asked my doctor yesterday if he would support me medically if I took a cruise...he said, " No, I don't recommend you go on a cruise, apart from being very vunerable you need to disclose your half dozen or so conditions and if there was a claim I would have to supply the travel insurance company with your full medical history from A to Z.

End of my cruising career, ah well done 22 of them.

Thank you for your concerns. Murray River cruise, don't think so, might be a bit boring. I have been down there on a day trip on the paddle steamer. Too expensive when you are travelling solo.

Thats true about solo 😩 personally I’ve been many times on Murray on a houseboat and love it. My sis went on Murray princess on an official cruise and loved it and all the excursions which were all included and said food was equal to cruising. But I agree that cruising is def the way to go while we still can.

It is hard to justify me spending $500 a day for a cabin, I don't see a lot of value there.

The Proud Mary cruise we did wasn't at all boring. There were plenty of excursions and over the five days we learnt so many interesting things about the river and the lands and cultures around it. Fares fluctuate depending on the time of year and the singles fares weren't outrageous.

What we’re the accommodations like?

Very small but comfortable enough. We spent very little time in our cabin - just sleeping and showering/dressing. There is a big area aft on the upper deck with tables and chairs, and the dining room / lounge has comfy sofas.

I have read this previously but would like to know how we can verify this.

I know we were covered when my husband needed to be transferred by RFDS from Exmouth to Perth last year.

Yes that's right. The RFDS do not charge Australian citizens to use their service. When living in Alice Springs I worked for the RFDS & many patients were transferred to Adelaide or even Melbourne depending on Illness. Of coarse this is only land transfers.

Sorry to hear the sad news mate. As you say you have done a lot of cruises to lots of wonderful places & on some really great ships. And we love to hear of your adventures and your humour, so please keep up the good work here on CC.

We'll have to catch up again soon either down there or when you are up in Sydney - you may even venture out here to the wild west 🙂 Cheers Neil & Tracey

Am I reading Covermore's website and PDS right - on 20th April they updated their policy and now cover cruising for an additional premium. Anyone else seen that? We're on Coral on 26th June (family of 4, not seniors) so I want to get it sorted soon.

As far as I know they always covered cruising, as they are the recommended one on Princess site, they just werent covering Covid on multi night cruises.  I pointed this out to my PVP, and he referred to Princess management. Almost imediately the took the recommendation off the website. However they are now offering cruise covid cover.

We ended up going with 1Cover which always covered covid and cruising and as Ive used them lots in the past were quite happy to go with them.

That's how I read it. Add cruising at extra cost and in my case add extra if 80 years old or over.

Read the PDS carefully, they have special condition clause that puts another $250 on a claim

Have a look at Icover

You already have it for all Australian states if you are a Queenslander. 😄

That's good - does it cover you for international waters?   I keep remembering those rescues of round the world sailors  whose boats have unfortunately sunk near Australia and wonder if they have to pay the cost of the search and rescue.  Not that I begrudge them....  Our house is directly under the flight path for the Toll Ambulance Air Rescue service (https://www.tollambulancerescue.com.au/) and I often hear it going out or coming back in to Canberra Hospital.  It can be tracked on flightradar - which is handy for me because my daughter rides horses out in the country and travels almost daily on a country road with a bad reputation.  😞

I emailed the Queensland Ambulance Service for confirmation, and this was the reply:

"Please be advised all Permanent QLD Residents are automatically covered by the Queensland Government for road Ambulance Treatment and Transports both in QLD and Australia Wide. In the event of an Interstate road ambulance treatment or transport, please refer to the attached information sheet for instructions should an Invoice be received.

QLD Ambulance emergency helicopter transports is not a cost that is passed onto the patient if the transport is within QLD.

If traveling Interstate, it is recommended to contact your Private Health insurer or Travel insurer to clarify any additional coverage for emergency helicopter/air transports. In some situations where an area is obviously not accessible by road and a helicopter is the only option, this is something that we will assess on a case by case basis should a QLD Resident receive an Invoice."

So it looks like the coverage is more limited than I thought and definitely does not cover international waters. The state boundary extends three nautical miles out to sea and the national boundary extends to 12 nautical miles.

The medical evac from the Sea Princess that I mentioned was from a spot 70 km NE of Cairns, to Cairns. The woman involved lived in Queensland. They were informed that the cost of the evac would be covered by the Q'ld gov't.

From other research, I believe that the Q'ld gov't will cover the cost of ambulance transport incurred interstate, but I do not believe this would include medical evac from a ship. The person has to apply for reimbursement of any ambulance bills.

I wish this was the case in NSW. We have to take out ambulance cover through a private health fund.

I sent a query of to my local member re query re evac from a cruise ship. After the usual pass the buck between departments, i have been advised that medical evac from an overseas operated cruise ship will be billed to the cruise ship.
