The Fleet Report and Daily for Friday December 30th, 2022

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

Love pork bacon, although I sometimes use turkey bacon to be healthier. My two usual resolutions are to declutter my house and get more fit. I hope no enormous changes at the last minute. I like the quote. Maybe to the meal, yes on the  drink and the wine is outside my budget. 

I have been to Christchurch on my HAL Auckland to Sydney cruise in 2006, but the port was Lyttelton. We mainly went to the Antarctic Centre, so didn't see the city.

 

Wow, it's 62F out, with an occasional sprinkle and some sun. Feels great. I've been busy. I did grocery shopping this AM. Now doing laundry. My hands are bothering me from the RA, likely due to the one skipped dose of medication, which meant I had none for a month.

 

@lindaler Ugh on the suitcase situation. I hope you can enjoy the cruise none-the-less.

Good afternoon Dailyites!  Out the window the clouds are becoming thicker, rain is expected over the next two days.   Starting sometime tonight.  However the computer shows it's 62 with a red sun.  oh, no, it just changed to Rain tonight with an umbrella picture.  Finally catching up to the real world.

 

Well we seemed to have fixed everything in the house that blew with the fuses, except the house phone.  Right now we have a princess (remember them) plugged in.  If it rings we answer as there is no ID and no answering machine.  I got a call early this morning about my CT scan on Tuesday late afternoon appt.   No food after 12:15, and drink lots of water.  I wonder how long that test takes, if i drink lots of water?????  The boss is letting me work in the morning, as I have no idea when I will get out, and when I do, I will be hungry!  So I will get food before I come home, and then i wont work, because i will get home so late.  So working in the morning works well for me.

 

I love Marcus Aurelius'.  He is mentioned a lot in my favorite book -And Ladies of the Club, and one day when one of the malls was doing a massive book sale, I found a copy of And ,,Ladies (my copy had fallen apart, and then next to it, was a book by Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, written to Himself.  Copyright 1928.   In 5 years, it will be 100 years old.  Every page has wisdom.  Every note brings thought and self analysis.  Aurelius was born in 121 AD, the book was discovered in the 11th century and printed for the first time in the mid 15th century.  I am glad someone wanted to reprint it again 500 years later.

 

I'm a bit distraught.  My Carnival cruise no longer shows, and the last 3 ports have no excursions listed.  The person at Carnival that I talked to yesterday says that my cruise doesnt show because it may be full,  and that the shore excursions dont show because my computer is set up wrong.  Well I can see 5 out of 8 ports so I'm not sure that is correct.  What is wrong with a society, when customer service doesnt know, but wont ask those above them.?  If you dont know, then unless you want to remain an idiot, then ask.  Sorry about the rant, but does anyone here have a clue why excursions wouldnt show?

 

BUT on that note, the Dailyites are well traveled individuals, and probably know what I can do in-

Athens, Katakolon and Messina without an excursion.  Create my own so to speak.

@lindalerI'm glad the luggage was found, I hope you are reunited soon.

First we need to pack which is not very difficult on a Caribbean cruise and cruise line that is advertised Country Club Casual and most people follow.

Your world cruise cruise sounds great. Do you like Azamara; I may have asked you this before. The world cruise looks great with many places over nite. Plus it has my favorite island in the South Pacific, Fakarava!

My brother left New York after college.He could not believe that "New Yorkers" were so friendly in my neighborhood. We visited Akaroa in April of 2013 while cruising from Auckland , New Zealand to Sydney , Australia and ending up in Vancouver , Canada on the Oosterdam .

 

Due to the major earthquake that destroyed large parts of Christchurch and the facilities in that port Akaroa was used to take tours from there to go to Christchurch . Akaroa as named by the Maoris was than also called Port Louis Philippe by a large group of French settlers that arrived than.  There still is a strong French influence, current population of 780 .

 

The drive from Akaroa to Christchurch ( about 50 miles ) is through a beautiful mountainous area.

Will try to find a number of pictures without to many names and dates of our tour. 

It is a tender port .

some sad news on the block tonight.  Our neighbor across the street passed this morning.  He was a veteran and well liked.  When the shutdown started the police and fire departments gave him a parade around the block.  Lots of people came out to wish him a happy birthday.  He was 104.

 

I'm very sorry to hear your neighborhood veteran has passed away, but what a long, impressive life!  I'm sure the parade the first responders held for him was a highlight of his life.  Condolences to all who knew him.

Bob, Yes we really enjoyed our Azamara cruise experience. Enough that we booked three cruises in addition to World. The ships are about 8,000 tons less then Prisendam and have max capacity of 700. Dining was great and we enjoyed the onboard entertainers. There CD and Asst. CD are super talented musicians. I would suggest you take a look at the many streaming Azamara ship tours and reviews available on You Tube.

We have loved our many Hal cruises and have a couple of bookings. Trying a new cruise line has been refreshing. The ships are a floating boutique in design and the crew extremely attentive but not in a bad way.

Trying something new worked for us.

Good afternoon.  Our temperature never reached 60F, and the clouds are getting thicker.  There is no rain in the forecast until Monday, but we don't have to go anywhere until Tuesday.

 

It's been a lazy day, but I got a couple of things done, then spent part of the afternoon reading.

If there isn't a shuttle service to Christchurch, we see that there is a local bus.  Another poster said the locals don't like the cruise ship people to use the local bus, however.

For my Prinsendam fans, she is still the ship pictured on the shore excursions for the ports on the Holland America site.

 

If I don't post tomorrow, I'll wish you a Happy New Year with good health and ability for good travel as well!

Jake, our condolences on the passing of your neighbor.  Living to 104 is quite an accomplishment.  He must have had an interesting life.

Annie, my suggestion for Athens and Messina is to take the Hop on, Hop off bus.  In Athens, they pick you up in the parking lot of the port area.  In Messina, we got it at the cathedral after walking into into town.  Depending on your ability, you could climb the bell tower at the cathedral, just don't be up there at noon when the bells chime.

 

In Katakolon, Olympia is near with the site of the ancient games.  You can catch a local bus near the port for about 8 to 10 Euros each, at least that was the price in 2019.  Early morning is best, and we caught the 9 am bus.  The bus will drop you off near the site of the museum and anciient games and pick you up two hours latter.  Katakolon is an easy walking town, and has restaurants on the waterfront for a snack, meal or cold drink.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Thank you so much for the information.  I went into the computer using the other option (not google,) and got to look at all the ports that they visit, and Messina, and Katakolon were not even on the list.  I was beginning to think that the ship is full, but the ports may have changed...to where I know not because you cant see the itinerary if you cant find the cruise.  So on a whim because Athens did show on the list, I put in my booking number to see if I could reserve that way, and nope, I cant.  So, either the ports changed, or the cruise changed, but I really would hate to show up in Italy with 10 days to wait for the next cruise.    The flight is paid for, and the hotel is now reserved.  We ended up booking Hotel Nazionale, near the Pantheon, and it was listed as a very quiet neighborhood, as cars are not allowed on the square.  There is a government building there so lots of security, and it included breakfast each day.  Much better than trying to round up food from somewhere each morning.

Annie, I'll copy and paste Rich's posts for each of those cities so you can check out photos and discussions.  Athens was posted Dec. 24, 2021 and July 14, 2022.  The reason I'll do both dates is because there probably are different photos on each date, due to circumstances and new posters.  For instance we drove to Ohio on Dec. 24, 2021 so I didn't post photos of Athens late in the day.  I had time to post Athens and Piraeus photos on July 14, 2022.

Annie! If the Hotel Nationale has not changed, you will love it. I spent a week there in 2006 and could walk everywhere! My nephew was so impressed, that whenever he went there for business after that trip, he stayed there. 
 

The rooms were lovely. The breakfast room was unique and the breakfast was impressive in its variety. There was also a great meeting room near the entrance where we would enjoy planning our next outing.

Good evening!  Somehow the day got away from me.  But I did put a hold on a cruise. I just couldn’t decide what to book and was torn between Hawaii and the British Isles.  However, since our last international flights in June were so crazy and stressful, we decided Hawaii would be the best this time. We’ve been to Hawaii before but it was 1984 and we’ve never sailed so it’ll be fun, plus I love all the sea days. Sandi @StLouisCruisers, I checked out our roll call and it was 6 pages of posts between two posters, back and forth back and forth. I’m glad your roll call is more interesting and to have Debbie and her sister too is fantastic. The cruise is on hold because I’m adding Club Orange and our PCC couldn’t call them today because of her schedule and the holiday. Anyway, I’m just shocked that I got Craig to cruise longer than 14 days. 
 

@luvteaching — that is so exciting DH is coming home. What a great way to start the New Year.

Am very late posting today

Thanks for all the information on the daily today, thanks @rafinmd  Roy for all your input.

We have been to Akaroa several times by land ,also by sea.  We were pleased to be  able to meet with @aliaschief and his DW  in Akaroa.

@St Pete Cruiser  at Lyttelton there will be a shuttle bus to travel into Christchurch, but it is not free.

@luvteaching  so pleased that your DH will be returning home.
