Teenagers causing damage to ship this week

Recommended Posts

Currently on Odyssey. We have sailed Royal for 20 years and have done spring break cruises many times over the years with no issues. Yes, lots of kids but no problems other than crowds. The overall ship, shows, food, and service have been excellent!

BUT the clientele is changing. Lots of rude families and large groups of teenagers causing issues every day. Apparently several families were forced to disembark in Aruba (one with $12,000 damage bill) and others have been locked in their cabins. We have seen people pushing scooters and older passengers out of the way, verbally abusing the staff. Several elevators have had the glass shattered and are not working now, security cameras have been broken around the ship, and apparently the teen area has damage. I left the casino at 2 am and there are still groups of teens ignoring the security officers tonight and running around the ship.

It’s sad that parents let their kids behave this way. Royal should adopt a zero tolerance policy and immediately kick the entire family off the ship if their kids are causing issues like this. I understand teenagers will be teenagers (we have a 13 year old) but causing property damage and assaulting older guests is not right.

Kids sail free..., please stop this promo.  I've never experienced so many kids in the months following Xmas break as I have this year. Misbehaving, rude and pushy. I had 2 young teens at 4am harass me for any cash I had on me cause they wanted to go back to the arcade and had no money left.

Hellooo, parents?

We were also asked for money from a random young teenage girl.  She would have paid us back later 😂. When did kids start asking strangers for cash?  Just wrong in so many ways!

I will be on the Vision in two weeks, and hope I don't experience anything like this. I have zero tolerance for rude and disrespectful behavior.

After booking, we realized the cruise falls over Easter, so although it's an older ship, and a longer itinerary, I expect there will be a good amount of families /kids/ spring-breakers.

KSF does not encompass this age group

I believe this is an exception vs the rule.  We've been on many cruises and have never experienced behavior like described above.   99% of the teens we've seen or encountered are respectful and are just having a good time.  YMMV

Currently on odyssey too.  We have been on over a dozen RCL cruises and have never seen this.  We have kids from 10-16 on board as well.  The ship is beautiful and never felt crowded.  The teen are out of control.  Talking to security they said last week was worse.  Yes several broken elevator screens, cameras, etc. The teen club VR wasn’t opened all week so probably last week something week.  also KSF didn’t apply for these spring break weeks….hopefully they get charged for the repairs.

what the heck? It's only for kids 12 and under. KSF has nothing to do with the hoards of teenagers.

Plus, it's so dang limited that it's extremely, and I mean it, extremely difficult to apply it to any cruise that working parents with kids in school could possibly go on. KSF definitely doesn't apply to any school breaks.

Parents need to start being parents if their family is disturbing the quality of others on there cruise, damaging property and putting elders at risk.

If the ship is put in some time of an emergency situation you just can’t drive away and go home.

Unfortunately this is parenting in 2023. It's not to say all parents are raising their children this way, but I feel like it's flipped to that of the majority of parents are more hands-off than ever before. This has resulted in a lack of discipline and social etiquette amongst teens. It's not just on cruise ships, but at the malls, parks, movie theaters, restaurants.. There's no real consequences for their actions, and they learn behavioral conditioning from Tik Tok and YouTube.

At a rec league hoops game for our 14 year old last weekend a parent in front of us gives their 5 year old child the Ipad to watch some cartoon at loud volume, because the mom doesn't want to parent their child? I watched the child get rewarded for misbehaving. This child is in training for an Odyssey cruise 10 years from now!

The excuse is always the same, "Well, would you rather have my child kicking and screaming because they don't want to be there?" -- sigh, no accountability

Part of it is also the shifting demographics

When talking with the security onboard RCI, they state they love working RCI than their previous post on CCL as things are so much calmer and significantly less theft, fighting, and and other onboard incidents.  They stated CCL ships came with a brig while RCI ships did not.

I have noticed more and more incidents of vandalism on ships over the last 5-6 years.  I wonder if RCI is now considering a brig in their upcoming ships or maybe they have already converted space and installed them in some refits.

That is my thought. There just isn’t a nice way of saying it…. You can just tell there’s more of a shift of the type of people now sailing on Royal.

I wish they would do away with the promos and increase prices well above Carnival. This is the first cruise in years we aren’t booking another cruise onboard. We have Allure and Icon already booked for later this year and next. If we have the experience of this cruise we will be looking a Celebrity as a step up.

I agree with everyone here that the behavior is terrible and parents/families should be held accountable.   Just wanted to comment: I am sailing for spring break, and we booked Kids Sail Free - its possible! (2 working parents, with 3 kids, in school, traveling during Chicago's Spring Break.)

Let’s be honest, other than the teen club it is hard to determine who caused the damages.

That said, whoever is found to cause the damages should be thrown off no matter their age.

Kids 13 and over do not qualify for the promo. It’s full adult rate even on shore excursions.
