I think this is where I’m stumped. Sometimes you just have to wade in, no matter what. I was at the World Class Bar enjoying a quiet drink and talking with the terrific bartender, when I heard the awful, tinny, horrible sound of bad music playing on a cell phone. The owner of the phone— let’s call him Beevis— walked up, talking loudly with his buddy Butthead— and together they were taking up a lot more space than their purely physical selves. Now I love music. And I can tolerate at least almost anyone and smile while doing it. But anyone who does what these guys were doing to music— well, I hate ‘em. But, since I am a peace loving person, I took my drink and myself out and over to the Casino bar. Left B&B to themselves. The bartender happened to have the same McCallan I was drinking so all was good with drink #2… until… wait… ah, crap… yes, you know what happened. Beevis and Butthead entered the space, still sporting their own soundtrack of tinned beats. I stayed quiet a bit… but I could feel the blood pressure rising. Finally, I asked the bartender— really more stated to the bartender: “You know, I am guessing playing music like that is against the rules. But I also guess that if you said something to them they could wind up causing problems for you. And even if I were to bring someone on the management team over, that might be a problem because the manager might think you told me to bring them over to deal with it and get aggravacted.” The bartender was a little wide-eyed, but also smiled just a bit, too, and said, “a delicate situation, yes…” I said, “But not for me. Not anymore…” I walked over to where the phone was tinnily bleating away its nasty little canned beats, leaned over and just stared at it. It wasn’t long until Beevis saw me. ”What’s your problem, bro?” ”No problem,” I said. “I am just wondering who the *ss*ole is playing their phone like this.” Beevis said, “That’s MY phone!” ”Ahhh!” I said. “So now we both know who the *ss*ole is,” and just stared at him. I admit it. I was pissed. But acting very polite. Part of me was almost hoping he would hit me. Instead, after a few seconds of staring, he turned the sound off. ”Hey, thanks!” I said and walked back to my seat. ”You’re MacCallan, Mr. Scott,” said the bartender. I noticed it was a double. Nice. The purveyor of tinny beats left shortly thereafter, never to be heard from again. A couple of folks around me thanked me. And the next time I turned back to the bar I had another double MacAllan. Wheee! I was about four drinks past where I intended to be. But all good. It wound up being a peaceful time before dinner after all. Oh, one more thing. I finally finished the second double (sixth drink) and as I was leaving the bartender called out, “Oh, Mr. Scott! Don’t forget your MacCallan!” Huh? Sure enough, there on the bar was yet another double MacCallan. I remember this story very well. What I had for dinner? Not so much. 14

I mentioned it to staff that he should use ear buds. We were walking by on our way somewhere. Guess what, he was back the next morning!!

Would you mind lowering the volume on your phone slightly? I suffer terribly from migraine headaches.” Option B: ”Excuse me. I am so sorry to disturb you, but I noticed you are not using headphones while you are using your personal music device. Would you like to borrow a pair of mine? I have an extra pair that I would be more than willing to loan you.” 2

It was just distracting and loud when juxtaposed against the mostly quite atmosphere of the Solarium at that time. And I agree with @emmas gran in that it's no different than loud video chats with family. As for way too common, this was our first encounter with such a thing in now 10 completed cruises onboard Celebrity. I really fear I am becoming less tolerant of those around me now that I am maturing in years. I guess I've always been old all my life because my tolerance level for stuff like this has always been low. I really mind someone unnecessarily playing music/videos out loud, or having video calls on speaker phone. Yes it can be comparable to what might be heard from live chatter but there is no reason to not consider others nearby when playing music in a closed space and using a headset. I have not necessarily noticed it on Celebrity like that but in general this practice is definitely more prevalent. I think the quieter a venue is the more intruding this would feel so that would definitely make a difference and the Solarium is often a quieter area. Sign of the times.

I just can't fathom what rationale these sort of people come up with in their heads...maybe some overwhelming need to be noticed?? Some sort of backward thinking that this anti-social behavior is a way of being social?? phoenix_dream Posted July 10, 2023 #42 Share Posted July 10, 2023 I also hate when people do that on their balconies, especially when they know we are sitting on ours right next to them. Loud phone calls and video chats, loud music. Sometimes it's a family with children who let their kids make all kinds of noise - but it certainly can be anyone of any age!

I really fear I am becoming less tolerant of those around me now that I am maturing in years. Honestly, I don't think it's a matter of becoming less tolerant, although as I age I am less shy about speaking up for myself - I think it's more that than necessarily being less tolerant. I think there has been a significant drop in common courtesy and manners. This was happening before, but for whatever reason I think the Covid shutdown has resulted in a definite change in human behavior and often not in a good way. It's like - I had to suffer through Covid and it's consequences so now I deserve to do what I want, when I want, and the heck with everyone else. All one has to do is drive around the neighborhood to see this evidenced in driving behavior. Never in my (long) life have I seen so many careless, reckless, aggressive, inconsiderate, illegal driving behavior as I see since Covid. I see it also virtually everywhere I go - in my home area or when traveling. People are more rude, act more entitled, and on and on. It's disheartening. 3

Hope you can read and translate the signs ( all in French ) while traveling at 140km in a 90km zone in order to keep up with the traffic. Hey, it's all good there--- especially the food !! It’s one thing to recognize bad etiquette in any social setting and something altogether different in handling it. I think most people (not all) who say they would do XYZ really wouldn’t if faced with the actual circumstance. My approach was to do nothing but I was annoyed. I tried giving the stink eye but the offender was oblivious to their surroundings. I’ve read a few good suggestions in this thread, tho.
