The Fleet Report and Daily for Saturday April 27th, 2024

Recommended Posts

Good morning, Dailyites, I had difficulty with CC yesterday, too, so far today it seems okay.

Just a few days ago, we were flying over Greenland on Iceland Air, there were some amazing views.  I don't know if my pictures are of the correct area, but I was interested to see the markings in the glaciers so plainly from so high up.

IMG_5017.thumb.jpeg.6168e0b1775d7d22e2e4bfb1be6b61fe.jpeg

In the second picture, it is not obvious, but I could see open water glistening along the right edge of the waterway.

Maureen, @RMLincoln, so sorry about your DSIL, consider yourself hugged today, too!

I need to go to the grocery store today.  Not looking forward to it, but it must be done!  I will see what they have in the way of seedlings, too.  I need some lettuce babies.

Good morning and thanks all!
Hope everyone stays safe in these storms.  Our fire season has started very early, eek!  Summer used to be something to look forward to.
We love Brunello,  apparently was the late Queens favourite.  We’ve stayed near Montalcino and enjoyed it immensely.

Went back to visit the owls and saw mom, and perhaps a feather of baby’s?  image.thumb.jpeg.40bd7b2ddcc5ad1a2a9b66c7c7ec219c.jpeg

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

Happy King's Day. Yum, I like devil dogs cakes but don't have any (I didn't know of the military connection). No dog here. Children should be taught to save. Good quote. Maybe on the meal. Pass on the drink and wine. I haven't been to Ilulissat.

It's partly cloudy and in the 60's. We had rain starting early this AM. I heard it at 4AM. I briefly woke up at 2, 4 and 7AM, getting about 7 hours of sleep. The wound area is now very black and blue, but not more painful. No big plans for today, although maybe having BFF hang some pictures.

@StLouisCruisers Thanks for our start and the photos.

@grapau27 Thanks for the Devil Dog info.

@aliaschief Appreciate your sharing your journey. Hopefully no pirates around!

@MISTER 67 Congrats on the golf tournament. Are you doing the 7 day cruise?

@rothbury Thanks for the Rotterdam photo.

@RMLincoln Prayers for DH's continued improvement.

@Seasick Sailor Oliver was a lucky puppy to end up with you and Allen!

@Quartzsite Cruiser Great photos.

@smitty34877 Hugs to you and Tana. I'm sure the house seems too quiet today. I agree with ordering in today!

@bennybear Wow, the owl photos are spectacular.

@Vict0riann Thanks for the photos.

Prayers for the Care List and Cheers for those Celebrating.

Good morning all!

A good selection of days. There are no small dogs in our extended family, only large spoiled dogs (but well-trained).  I like the quote, will pass on the drink, red wine and meal (love shrimp but I like cauliflower in smaller doses). We've been to Greenland on the VOV, but not to Illulissat.  Thank you Lenda @Quartzsite Cruiser and Sandi @StLouisCruisers for the fantastic photos. That glacier -- wow!!   Sandi, we saw those cottony plants all over too.  They're called Eriophorum Angustifolium or Cottongrass or Cottonsedge.  So interesting!

Yesterday I went to Flower World, my favorite nursery -- but dangerous to go there, it's like a Disneyland for gardeners 😉  I got annuals to fill my many pots, and even got them planted yesterday afternoon.  Good thing, because today looks like we'll get rain most of the day.

Karen @luvteaching Thank you for posting your Chocolate Snickerdoodle recipe last night.  I grew up with Snickerdoodles, but I think I'd like the chocolate version more. 🙂

Latest update about Amber (sounds good!)

“Amber continues to show great signs of improvement. Despite some swelling, which we expected, she is still continuing to progress.
Today they were able to get her transferred to a chair and to sit up and the best part was PT confirmed what I thought I saw which was some slight movement on her stroke affected side! Her BP has finally come down to normal ranges and her speech continues to improve."

Good Morning from a windy day at the beach

Like others, I was unable to access CC from yesterday afternoon until now. Glad it is back!

My dad taught us to save from quite young. Even my babysitting money at 25cents an hour, I would save a percentage. It was a great lesson, treat it like bill to be paid. Taught the same to my kids.  The recipe looks good, as we all like cauliflower and shrimp.

We are scheduled to go to Greenland on the VOV this summer but not today's port.

A very big shut out to @Gail & Marty sailing away for another successful Project Linus. Takes a lot of time, work and money to pull that off. Kudos to all who participated.

      Playing golf this afternoon.

Stay safe and enjoy today

    Charlene

Thanks It's a team effort that makes it work.

Not wearing orange since I no longer have any orange clothing that is wearable. A person might think that Mona Lisa and DaVinci were pampered cats, but they would disagree. They also want you to know that the service here is terrible, just terrible.

No on the menu (shrimp) but I would probably like the drink, maybe only once. This is the second time we've had a Brunello di Montalcino, but this one is from a different maker. For a Finger Lakes red with a note of cherry, I might go with Weis Vineyards Pinot Noir 2021 from Keuka Lake, $29.99.

During the last hour of online class on Thursday, after donating blood, I started to feel exhausted, and that persisted into Friday--just total depletion, and not only of blood. It's better today even though I slept very badly.

I shifted gears on the shepherd's pie and made it as a stew, using the matzah kugel batter for dumplings. Will have it again tonight, with a salad of Boston lettuce.

A friend who is a 9-1-1 dispatcher and EMS trainer is recruiting 30 volunteers to be made up with fake injuries for a drill at the end of May. I would be more willing if it weren't at 7:00 a.m. and about 25 miles away.

Good morning from a cloudy and windy central Texas.  It is currently 73F with a predicted high of 79F.  We are under a wind advisory this afternoon with winds of 20mph and maybe above.  The rain will also return this afternoon, and last through tomorrow afternoon.  Yesterday the total rain on the weather station gauge was 1.86 and the old fashioned one looks like 2 inches.  It's still too wet and muddy to get to it to get a good reading.

Right now, I'm using Edge on my computer.  When I tried Chrome, I got a message that CC could not be accessed.  It said CC was unable to handle the request.  I hope they get the problem fixed soon.

Hopefully, one day we'll be on a BHB for Kings Day.  It's been years since I've seen a Devil Dog cake, and I learned something today, that US Marines are known as Devil Dogs.  When we had our mini dachshunds, they were pampered.  Our DDs learned to save from our example.

I like the Helen Keller quote, which is true.

We'll probably pass on the meal.  The drink might be good, and I'd like to try the wine, but not at that price.

We were in Ilulissat on Rotterdam VI in 2003.  My pictures, many like Sandi's @StLouisCruisers will follow.

The composition of Fur Elise by Beethoven in 1810 was a gift to the world.

@StLouisCruisers  Sandi, I just looked up the weather in Frisco.  At 9am, it will be cloudy and 74F with winds of 16mph.  The winds will increase to 20mph by 11am.  It will probably be humid too.

@Haljo1935  Elizabeth, I hope you get your car repaired today.

@grapau27  Graham, thank you for telling us about today's days.  Thanks for the video of the hang glider.

@aliaschief  Bruce, thanks for taking us along on your cruise.  It looks like you will have a "private yacht" for just you, Sue and 143 of your friends for the next few weeks.

@MISTER 67  Glad your team placed third.  That sounded like a brutal tournament to end the season.

@RMLincoln  Maureen, I'm glad your DH is doing well. and that you got a good night's sleep.

Good morning Dailyites from a windy morning.

I feel badly for those hit by tornadoes yesterday in Iowa and Nebraska. Too often we are sent tornado warnings on our phones. You never know who will be the next victim.

Prayers and Cheers for our Daily family. Vanessa, keep up the good work. Our hearts are with our troops and all suffering from war around the world.

All went well at the VA yesterday. Our private physician always has his nurse send labs, checkup information and updated meds. It moves the VA visit right along.

Here is our Oliver.  Rescued July 17 last year from a hoarding situation:

Thanks Sandi for the great pictures. When there are duplicate port days, I remember seeing the prior pictures and enjoy looking at them again.

Wanting to get to the Farmers market today but the weather looks windy with a chance of thunderstorms later. You can't trust the approximate times on our weather app.

I don't know what I will make for dinner, but will not be today's recipe of the day. Not because I wouldn't like #3, but just had shrimp alfredo yesterday for lunch.

Wishing all of our friends here on the Daily a peaceful,  healthy,  blessed weekend.

Wonderful photos Joy.

We visited Ilulissat on August 21, 2003, on Rotterdam VI as part of the 33-day roundtrip from NYC.  We went as far north in Greenland as Ilulissat and as far east as St. Petersburg.

We enjoyed our day in port, but unlike Sandi's @StLouisCruisers visit, there was not a boardwalk to view the glacier.  We had to walk across the fields and some very rocky areas to reach the area of the icebergs.  Walking on the rocks was challenging, but stepping from the rocks back onto the wet grassy area was where most people fell.  I don't think anyone was badly injured, but there were some sore people.

Many of my pictures will be similar to Sandi's.  It is a small town of 4,670 people located 250km north of the Arctic Circle and a UNESCO World Heritage site.  It is known as the "City of Icebergs" or in Danish, Jakobshavn, and is the third largest city in Greenland.  It is one of the most visited sites in Greenland.

And now for the main attraction, a few of the many icebergs we saw.  It looks like the glacier in the background of a couple of the pictures.  It is possible the iceberg that Titanic hit came from this area.  There are three small boats in front of this iceberg.

Good morning for another 5 minutes from a very windy central Texas.  Not much happening, just a few chores.  Not an exciting day.

Good morning and Happy Saturday from a chilly, for me at least, Tucson. I’m with Pennie @Nickelpenny, I think I need a sweater.

I have not had any problems with CC either on my iPhone or iPad. But both are old if that makes any difference.  Like I said yesterday I really need a new phone but don’t want to buy one after buying the new vehicle. But I’ll probably buy one soon so I can utilize the vehicle app.

Little Blue is 9 pounds and very spoiled but that’s okay, he’s worth it.

I had never heard of devil dogs, both the Marines and the cakes. I’ll pass on the meal suggestion, not a cauliflower although the last recipe with the cauliflower mash looks good.

The Brunello sounds good even though I don’t drink very much red wine. Very interesting history on that winery Ann @cat shepard

After all the weather talk about Texas I’m beginning to get worried about my Waco flight on Thursday. It looks like rain all week.

Have a great day everyone!

Sharon, unfortunately for you both Dallas and Waco show scattered thunderstorms from Thursday through the following Thursday.  Most times, it does not rain continuously, and often not in the entire area covered by the forecast.  Spring is our rainy season, and this year it seems pretty rainy.  Here are links to the forecasts for Waco and Dallas on Thursday from The Weather Channel.  Waco:  https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/c6103771c4fb2e80470f2870659b4326fe5ef610dd9a30e5bd56f7d8826d42a2

Ann, thanks for the Greenland pictures.  We've flown over that area before.  Ilulissat is in the far north on the west side of Greenland, and I don't think planes fly that far north unless they are doing the great circle route, which might have been used to get to your part of Canada.  I also don't think many ships go to Ilulissat, but it's well worth a visit.

Vanessa, I'm so happy your not in pain and are getting a good night's sleep now.  When DH had his back surgeries, the incisions were held together with a special bandage that incorporated small polymer zip ties.  When he showered, we had to use a waterproof covering over the incisions until they were fully closed.

Thank you Lenda @Quartzsite Cruiser     What a bummer. I’m just hoping that it doesn’t cause any flight delays. I’m meeting one of the ladies in our group in Dallas for the flight to Waco so at least I’ll be with someone. The others are driving from Austin and Houston and the birthday girl lives in Waco. Everyone but me are leaving on Sunday. I wanted to stay a few extra days plus it was cheaper than flying on a Sunday or Monday. I’ll just keep checking the weather and also reading what you and Elizabeth @Haljo1935 write.

I was just informed the St. Louis City game was postponed until June.  Maybe the team was scared off with the bad weather yesterday and didn't want to fly over thunderstorms and possible tornadoes.  The weather there today isn't actually too bad according to DS.

I agree the photos by Ann @Vict0riann of the glaciers and mountains in Greenland were pretty spectacular.  I also agree a lot of ships probably wouldn't call there though we did see a Ponant ship there the day we were.  Could have been more but they were waaaayyyy out from shore and couldn't tell who they were.  This season I looked up the schedule and there was one ship (MSC) in July and two in August (AIDA and Phoenix Reisen).

However I wouldn't say Ilulissat is pretty far north in Greenland.  More like central west coast.  Or south central.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Great photos.

@smitty34877 Hugs to you and Tana. I'm sure the house seems too quiet today. I agree with ordering in today!

@bennybear Wow, the owl photos are spectacular.

@Vict0riann Thanks for the photos.

Prayers for the Care List and Cheers for those Celebrating.

Yep, 7 days.

Sharon, the biggest potential problem would be at DFW.  If there's a lot of lightning and wind, they would likely close the airport until the storm cell passed.  It's better to err on the side of caution.  At least, the flight to Waco isn't long.  I hope the weather cooperates for you.

Good morning all,

It’s looking like we get sunshine today- the past 3 have been drizzly and cloudy all day.

Aren’t those Whoppy Pies?

@Gail & Marty sailing away  Pete shared a video about the Project Linus blankets. You have all done such a great job. It’s really nice to see the pictures and video and hear the back story. I’ve heard references to it from world cruiser’s blogs over the years and it’s inspiring to see. (The references to that project inspired me to crochet for our veterans in hospice here, now in year #2)

Have a great day everyone!

When I tried to figure out what Devil Dogs were I went to Google Images and this was for the home made ones.  Drakes made the store bought ones.   I think the shape and perhaps the filling distinguishes them from Whoopie Pies.

@Seasick Sailor thanks for the photos of cute Oliver.  Thank you for rescuing him.

Hoo? loves @bennybear's owl Pictures? I DO!🦉

@Seasick SailorOliver is a cutie and deserves to be pampered!  @StLouisCruisers your grand pups are also adorable!  Dont want to show any puppy favoritism...LOL.

Well, I think I have homes for 3 of the kittens.  I know DH wants to keep the runt, and I want to keep the momma Munchkin.

@Cruising-alongI love lilacs.  That is one thing I really miss from living up north.  They do not grow in the heat of the south.  Lovely vase.

Thank you Rich, Sandi, Vanessa, Tina, Ann, and Paul;.   Happy Birthday Debbie and I hope your trip is going well.  Condolences to Maureen  but great news on DH.  Vanessa, I’m pleased with your progress.

Cheers to the King, Children Saving and the Devil Dogs but I’ll pass on the Cake and Pampered Little Dog.  I like Helen Keller’s quote,

I was almost to Ilulissat on Crystal Serenity’s 2016 Northwest Passage cruise   We .couldn’t get tenders to shore nor local boats out to meet us but we spent time in the harbor.  A bit of irony here, it was a very long cruise, but other than Greenland the cruise from Anchorage to New York had only US and Canadian ports so apparently Greenland made the voyage legal under the PVSA.

Beethoven was pure genius.

I’ll pass on the meal. My alternative is Classic Caesar Salad, Port Braised Lamb Shank, and Dutch Apple Pie as served on MS Nieuw Statendam April 27, 2019:

Good afternoon,

i too had trouble accessing Cruise Critic both on Safari and on Edge.  So I gave up.  I was surprised when I came back a little while ago and was able to get back on.

Thank you to Sandi, Roy, Vanessa, Ann, Dixie and Tina for your contributions to the Daily and Fleet Report.

I like the Days and the quote by Helen Keller.

I have not been to the port,.

I am glad to report that all is calm here.  Trying to make some decisions for the future.

Today Jim received news that a childhood friend passed away. He had Alzheimer’s.  The wake and funeral is in Virginia (DC area) and he doesn’t feel up to making the trip, So the best we can do is send flowers and a card to his sons.  His wife passed in 2017.

Prayers for all on the Cares List and cheers to all celebrating and cruising.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

God Bless,

Terri
