Children in the Diamond Lounge?

Recommended Posts

Going back to children in the Diamond Lounge...

My wife & I cruised with our daughter, son-n-law, & our at the time 7 1/2 month old granddaughter this past May on the Freedom out of Barcelona. Our daughter & her husband are Diamond. We went into the Diamond lounge the 1st night and immediately asked the concierge hostess if our granddaughter would be allowed in there. She said no problem.

It was never completely full any of the times we arrived. The five of always got a sofa and two chairs and would stay for about an hour each night. Don't know how all the people in there felt but at least 5 or 6 people would come by to where we were sitting every evening to see and play with our granddaughter.

We had one night where she started getting a bit cranky and we immediately got up and left. But overall, it was a very pleasant experience with lots of friendly people dropping by where we were sitting.

Let me preface this by saying this is my personal opinion only.....not trying to start a debate.

I would prefer that they not allow children in the Diamond Lounge. I don't think it's too much to ask to have this area for a few hours for adults to enjoy drinks and social time with other adults.

Bringing a child into this environment changes the whole dynamics of the evening. Both cruises we were on did not have good experiences with bringing children. One family had a baby and toddler that cried every evening and one had an extended family who thought it was so cute to have their 4yr old practice her cartwheels every evening in the aisles while they cheered her on.

Sorry but I would rather have adults only....

I'm just reading this thinking how much I miss Waffle House now. It is always top of the list when we visit an area with one.

As far as the rest of the discussion... We aren't diamond and probably will never be since we don't cruise very often and when we do we aren't loyal to any particular line. But in theory I don't have issues with kids in the lounges. I know our kids are frequently the only kids in the CL when we take a land vacation, unless we are at Disney or something. There just aren't that many kids in the lounge when we are in Hong Kong or Osaka. For the cocktail hours or manager's reception we usually just bring them early on for a soda and a bite to eat before they head back to the room for some time on their ipads while we have a drink. When they were really young, we just didn't stay or if they were tired we skipped it. Thankfully we have never really had any issues.

That being said... I don't have any issues with having an adult only lounge. I'm not sure why Royal just doesn't make one of the bars kid free all the time, instead of during certain hours. There would still be plenty of areas where families can have family time.

No need to apologize, and I totally agree with you, but I know why you think you have to. There are many that insist their children have to be with them in all instances, and then automatically cry foul as if we are children haters should we desire an adults only theme. It is simply that there are many of us that don't think it is too much to ask to have at least one very small venue that is adult theme only for just a couple of hours. There are many other lounges on the ship, that the family can use their D/D+ vouchers in.

There is a large area for children only (Adventure Ocean) why can't there be one small area for adults for just a couple of hours?

We just got back from the Radiance, we had access to the Concierge and Diamond Lounges, and were traveling with our 5 yr old, went several times to the Lounges during cocktail hour and never had a problem. In the Concierge Lounge there were a couple of other kids some nights.

The parents of the crying children and cartwheeling kid should be banned from the DL. I see no problem with respectful children accompanying their parents to the lounge. The concierge should be policing this, just like they should be policing loud and obnoxious adults who've had one to many.

Seriously though, the problems you list are created by the parents (whom I assume are adults), or more precisely the lack of parenting.

In the first example, there is nothing wrong with a baby crying, that is the only way babies can communicate. Every parent knows babies cry. Either find a baby sitter or don't bring the baby into the DL unless the baby is asleep.

In the second example, what you described is dangerous (You Tube is full of examples of why it is dangerous). There is a time and place for (almost) everything. The DL is not a place to practice cartwheels.

I don't blame the kids until the kids are old enough to know better. I have found many a child who either did not distract from the atmosphere or in fact added to it. A blanket rule is unfair to those that have learned how to behave.

We have only seen a child once in the DL and they were well behaved but we totally agree with you at least for the cocktail hours it should be adult only.

I'm diamond and my daughter who is my cabin mate is not allowed in the DL. She is 31. I think it is a wee bit unfair that diamond parents can bring their brood of children to the DL but I cannot bring my one adult child who is my companion for the week. Thus I do not go to the DL. I know, different topic.

I don't have a "brood" but by RC's rules my son is Diamond and if RC says he is allowed, I will bring him in. If he is not behaving properly for the venue/environment, I will take him out. Very simple. If you were to cruise Celebrity i believe your daughter could join you when you receive reciprocal benefits for being Diamond on RC and she being your cabinmate. As I have said in other threads, if you do not like a rule, tell the company what you would prefer. Then at least they have the opportunity to change or address.

We bring our kids if they ask. They know my behavior expectations, enjoy the snacks, and have earned their status. I am yet to see anything in either the CL, SL or DL that I did not find family appropriate. If that point comes I may reconsider. I don't understand why if someone is seeking and adult vacation why would you choose a family line, why not a Celebrity or HAL with many less children. To me that is like going to Colorado in the winter and complaining about the snow. When we vacation without out children we typically pick an adults only option as we don't want to deal with other peoples children either. To those fixating on the past, remember "rules subject to change at any time".

Absolutely! If too many children taking up seats we will simply take our cocktails to kids club and enjoy their amenities. Not a problem, right? [emoji41]

Well said.

Too many companies put policies in place that punish everyone instead of dealing with the individuals causing the problems.

I don't mind well behaved children, seen but not heard, but I've never ever seen a child add to the atmosphere. [emoji33]

I thought people who share a stateroom where one person is diamond and the other is not, the other person would be allowed into the DL, but not get any of the other diamond benefits. Is that not the case? I know Celebrity has this policy.

Not the same. This gets brought up a lot.

I truly enjoyed the absence of children on the solarium on Oasis. I will be very disappointed if kids under 16 are in the Freedom Solarium this December. I am not a child hater. I had 3 of my own but my youngest is 17 and I like time away from little ones on occasion. Every parent thinks their kid is a precious precocious gem, forgetting how distracting or irritating OTHER peoples kids can be. They are often not that cute when they're not yours lol. I really hope RC keeps solariums kid free. I don't gamble so have zero interest in sitting in a casino and on beautiful cruise days I don't want to sit in a bar. I'm not diamond or any other special class of passenger so I don't have a horse in that particular race, but when the cruise lines keep relaxing the polices it just makes people push it even farther. Parent gets away with it in one area and then expects it in every venue.
