Dummies Guide to the Casino

With 8 cruises on Princess as a solo (2 credits each) I have never gambled in the casino. I probably will not in the future but I have the following questions.

 

Are funds taken out of your cruise account and are cashed in winnings credited to your account?

Can you use cash or a credit card in the casino and if so how are winnings handled?

How do you pay to use the slot machines; cruise card, medallion, or coins?

Do you purchase chips for table games at the table or cashier?

Can you launder non refundable OBC by using it in the casino and then cashing in?

Anything else dummies should know?

I'll answer only for table games as I have not played slots on the ship.

Chip purchases can be charged to your room. Any chips cashed in are paid in cash.

Cash is fine. I doubt they take credit cards in the casino but as you can charge them to your room, that's the same thing if you're settling your ship's account with a credit card. As mentioned above, all cashed in chips are paid in cash.

At the table (you probably could do it at the cashier but why?)

Officially no. But reports say in reality yes. Be aware that if you buy in and then quickly leave, they will probably talk to you about it. That happened to me but I was leaving that table as I realized it had a rule I did not like so I moved to a different game.

Having used the slots on many Princess ships, one would think I'd remember how it works, but it's been a few years since our last cruise.  I believe one can (or has to) set up a casino account using your cruise card (and thus tied to your onboard account) the first time on a slot .  I always start with cash and add more cash, if necessary, so don't actually charge anything to our cabin.  If I'm lucky enough to accumulate a positive balance, I then go to the casino cashier's window the last night of the cruise to "cash out."

Some additional information

You can play the slots using your Cruise Card* or cash. Payouts are made to your Cruise Card. To cash out you have to visit the cashier.

At table games you purchase the chips at the table either using cash or charged to your on board account. When ready to leave the game, and if you have lots of chips, you cash out by providing your smaller denomination chips to the dealer for larger ones. It's called "change for color." You then take these chips to the cashier for cash.

Roulette play has their own color chips. When you buy in the dealer assigns you your own color and value. Before leaving the table you must exchange your color chips with the dealer for casino chips. Sounds confusing, but it is easy. You then take the casino chips to the cashier.

If you sit down at a slot machine you can put your card in the machine and charge casino money to  your account. That purchase will be billed like any other purchase during your entire cruise. When you are done playing, hit the "Cash Out" button and it will transfer the funds to your card. If you have any winnings, they are not credited to your account, you must go to the casino cashier with your card and they will give your winnings in cash.

In the past we just put cash in to the machines and put winnings in our "Player Bank".  Your cruise card allows you to access the Bank once you set the PIN, either to or from the machine.  Cashed out at end of cruise at the Cashier's Cage.

 

Last cruise you could either use cash or get money from your room account directly.  But the Cashier's Cage didn't know anything about cashing out at the end of the cruise.  Instead you had to take all the money out of your Bank and then get a ticket from the machine.  Then take the ticket to the Cage to close out the account.  Since you have access to your room account it is very easy to run up a large bill for the end of the cruise.

You didn't ask, but most of the newer ships have an electronic poker table (Texas Hold 'Em) for up to 10 players.  Similar to the slots, you setup an account with your cruise card and you can charge cash to your onboard account and play the game.  When you want to cash out, you visit the Casino Cashier.

1. Go to Casino.

 

2. Empty pockets of all money, credit cards, ship cruise cards, ship medallions and anything of value on the floor of the Casino entrance.

 

3. Leave further ahead of what you would have if you had stayed.

Look for the classes to teach you card games, roulette, etc. Not only do you learn how to play the game, but you also get a coupon for $5 match play. For the Match Play:

 

1) The odds of the payout has to be 1:1 (Red/Black on the roulette wheel, but no single number)

2) You bet $5, and the Card is considered another $5 bet.

3) If you win, you get $10 plus your $5 back ($15). If you loose, you get $0. So, the Expected Value is in your favor for that bet.

You could give me a table where all the numbers were black. I would bet on black. I would still manage to lose. My gambling prowess is non-existent.

If you have any monies on your casino account you must cash out the last night before disembarkation day.  

I am not sure what happens if you do not do that.

One of two things:

- Your account would be flagged and you would be sent to the Guest Services desk when you tried to disembark on the last morning to settle your account, or in this case, receive the amount left over in your casino account, or

 

- a check will be mailed to your address on record by corporate several weeks/months after the cruise ends.

It is good to know they don't really keep it.  They do a very good job of making sure people know to cash out on the final night.

The Casino is playing the long-term odds (over time, the house has the advantage - for example, out of 100 plays, the casino wins 51% of the time). That implies the individual should put down one big bet, and either win it all, or lose it all. Over the short-run, you can beat the house. Over the long run, the house beats you.

Regardless of what you do, you will lose.  Also, you will lose faster than if you come to Vegas instead as the games on the ship are not regulated by any governmental body and the odds of better in Vegas.  Not good but better.

In high stakes hold-em tournaments, you are basically playing against the other players.  So, if you are better at poker or better at bluffing or if the other players are really bad, you can come out ahead.  However, some of the casinos in Vegas and I believe that some of them on the ships have poker playing machines so I don't know how good the machines are at playing poker.  I do realize that it is sort of hard to bluff a machine.

Tip: Always boast about your winnings, conveniently omit any conversation about your net profit.
