I am mystified, anyway in a nutshell things are not good with the 1000 crew still on Ruby Princess off NSW coast, crew member reports 700 in isolated cabins. We are hoping it is fake news, time will tell. Edited March 28, 2020 by NSWP

I was onboard for that and there were still Americans on casino VIP deals on this cruise. I avoided them whenever possible. I haven't heard or seen anything about your trip. Still only the 1 case in Tassie confirmed. I received another email from the CDPU in Tassie this morning saying the isolation should last till tonight. Because we came in on 14th March we were not told to self isolate. That became official for cruises arriving on the 15th. "Hunter69" was doing b2b2bs (NZ trip/Melb-Syd and the cancelled Alaska cruise). He may know something if he is reading this thread. Keep safe, I'm ok so far. No symptoms but it hard to believe that only one passenger caught it. So many passengers from overseas they could be anywhere.
Pushka Posted March 28, 2020 #307 Share Posted March 28, 2020 I was thinking that we are moving towards the 14 day period of Ruby Princess. Then it occurred to me, how many didn't self isolate. This may not be the end of the Ruby story.

Porky55 Posted March 28, 2020 #309 Share Posted March 28, 2020 (edited) Just browsing BookFace and now the focus seems to be gearing up to flights - there are heaps of flight numbers quoting dates (both recent and older) and Dep/Arr details notifying Intern / transiting domestic passengers of confirmed cases. Just in our local area, so this will be happening everywhere. Just as the cruise ship cases calm, the airplane cases ramp up. Stay at home and stay safe everyone 😳 Edited March 28, 2020 by Porky55

Her defiance of the restrictions is breath taking. I'm hoping her friends evaporate. I read the article about this lady. Not sure if she is being used as a scapegoat for something that is truly a tragic set of events that could have been avoided if those in charge did their job. First she got off the ship and stayed in her hotel room for two days as per the instructions sent to all passengers from the health department. "if you have a layover, you must remain in the airport or self isolate in your accommodation for the transit period". No special instructions for international passengers to stay 14 days in Australia. Very confusing wording by the health department notice between domestic and international. Secondly, her posts said she started to feel sick 5/6 days after the ship docked while she was already home and in a self isolation. Branding all passengers from the Ruby as Typhoid Marys is unfair. People who were sick on board and hid it is another matter. Sorry about the rant...quite stressed. No one went on vacation with the intent of hurting other people or getting a disease that will kill them or their loved ones..

I think the issue may be that Australia can't quarantine foreign nationals unless they wish to stay in Australia. I could be very wrong. But unless someone is arrested, we simply cannot detain them if they wish to leave. And at the time people were released, there were no positive results. Which may well explain why everyone was able to leave very quickly..... Edited March 28, 2020 by Pushka

But even so there can't be a rule stopping people from other countries booking the cruise. And having done a couple now, I don't think I'd want to do any more just Aus coast trips. I was thinking of only doing small boat cruises of say 35 people. Europe has some fabulous itineraries. Oh wait...... I would consider cruising again - from 2021, assuming virus is under control and a vaccine has been developed on a small ship with a walk around deck with a window which opens or a balcony under UK booking conditions to a destination on my bucket list. It would be from a small pool, but worth every cent! Edited March 28, 2020 by MMDown Under

That said, 700 isolated doesn't mean 700 cases, just that they're sensibly self-isolating to reduce transmission. Will have to see how it progresses - but given how much it spread amongst passengers, they would also have an issue with crew onboard.

It has been said, that with the number of people arriving in the country a week or two ago, there weren't the facilities to quarantine that many people. Now the numbers are manageable so they are being quarantined in hotels.

Tests had been taken and the people on the ship and the authorities should have waited for the results which came through same day. They were just allowed to leave and scatter. Princess said "Get off my ship" and the Australian gov't said "Get out of my country'. That is what everyone at the airport was saying, especially when we were not temperature scanned getting off the ship. Something all passengers were sure was going to happen for the safety of the Australian people. No disrespect or insult to any cruise line or country..but that is just how a lot of us felt.
