How are things where YOU are? (in relation to the Corona Virus)

Recommended Posts

I learned on Saturday that on Thursday my son was sent home from work because he developed a cough. He was told to come back when the cough had gone, no other symptoms. Yesterday he still had the cough so he is  going for a test tomorrow. He works for Downer EDI and said they were looking at closing down their Cardiff workshop next week. Got my fingers crossed he'll be ok.

Although he lives in the next street from me but I haven't seen him for two or three weeks so I'm ok.

I hope your son is ok lyndarra. Fingers crossed for him. One of my son's employees has tested positive, so there was a mad rush to contact all the others whom he'd worked with. Fortunately his work is closed to the public so full number of staff haven't been there every day.

Lol, funny 🙂 I recently saw a picture where the disappearance of tyrannosaurus was explained by the fact that the planet was attacked by an ancient coronavirus, and they could not protect themselves and wash their hands because of it were too short. Crazy, but funny 😀 😇 😷

John - Did your pain pills work to give you some relief?  How was your first "Teleheallh" consultation" - no bugs in the system?   MIL 95 and still doing huge jigsaw puzzles is pretty good.  Every Christmas our family got a new large jigsaw puzzle which everyone would work on.  Some  better than others.  My favourite bit is the edges which are the easiest.  MIL would hang in there until the end. I can understand your wife champing at the bit to get outside.  I don't miss shopping, as it was just a chore.  But I'd hate to not have a yard.  Give me 50 books in a laundry basket and I'll be set for inside.  Plus I enjoy cooking  so whilst the ingredients last we'll always have something good to eat.

You'll just have to run away with the internet.  What did we do without the internet?  It brings the world to us!

Thanks Cheryl and Andy. My attempts at making stock have not been very successful I must admit so I admire you! We have soup all year round so there is usually a supply in the freezer. We are shopping a couple of times a week to get fruit and veggies but go early to avoid crowds. I was actually surprised at how few people were at the shopping centre. we have quite a few family birthdays in April and May so I am ordering gifts online and posting cards which I bought a supply of but I did forget stamps and have run out! I'll have to go to the post office later in the week.

Take care! Stay sane!

Leigh - What would we do without being able to order gifts on line, during these difficult times.  I think the secret with shopping is to go early, without crowds.  Heard NSW Premier saying, "make a list.  Then in and out, no browsing shopping!"  No more shopping for me.  My girlfriend, who is also self isolated, has shopping, during the virus, down to a fine art.  Two shopping bags over each shoulder, doesn't touch trolleys, puts items straight in the bag, spends less than $100 so doesn't have to use keypad.  Washes shopping bags and herself as soon as she gets home.  That virus bug better not take her on!!

She tells me they made plane return to airport of origin (? infected Qantas baggage handlers).  Two Customs Officers have been confirmed, one in Qld one in NSW.  We text, email and phone every other day.  She was my Matron of Honour, so we have known each other for a long time, since high school.

Has your son got his corona virus results back?  What a worrying time for him and you.  I'm starting to wonder if we'll all get infected eventually, some worse than others.  It is hard to imagine how it got to this?  I'm particularly worried for my American friends.  I haven't been able to mention the "T" word for years, but now the emperor has no clothes for all to see!

It's wonderful we can still shop online. My son is not ill, lyndara's son is the one who is. One of my son's employees has tested positive but as my son doesn't work with him, there is no problem for him at the moment.

The emporer still is wearing his crown according to his supporters.

All my American friends were supporters of T.  One, thank goodness, has finally seen the light. So I don't have to take my masking tape with me!

We had successful seniors supermarket shopping this morning. There was plenty of TP at both Woolworths (Sorbent brand) and Coles (Quilton brand). Pathetic little twin-packs of Sorbent paper towels at Woolworths but none at all at Coles, however Coles had plenty of big boxes of tissues whereas Woolworths had none. No flour or cornflour at Woolworths but Coles had both. Between the two stores we managed to get almost everything we needed.

I do jigsaw puzzles online, both on my phone and my laptop, but different apps. The laptop one allows you to change the cut, including to one that is all identical squares so you can only match by colour not shape, and the number of pieces. I challenge myself by doing mystery puzzles, where the picture is not shown beforehand, in the square format and have worked up to 150 pieces so far.

Could you share the name of the apps?

We went out for a walk this morning. Spotted seven bears (three in one house), a crocodile and a panda. For those that don't know what that means there is a Bear Hunt initiative going where people put teddy bears in their windows for kids (and the young at heart) to spot when they are out for a walk. Very cute! Apparently it's happening in several countries - I first heard of it from a friend in NZ.

I make all my own stock. It's far nicer than most of the bought stuff and I can control what's in it. The real key is having a very large stockpot and an electric hotplate - you can't get the right slow simmer with gas. It needs a really, really slow simmer - a rate of one or two bubbles every 30 seconds. I let it simmer overnight, strain it and refrigerate it, next day I skim off any fat and pack it in one and two cup serves for the freezer. Once it's frozen solid I vac-pack it - it takes up less room in the freezer that way.

On our walk yesterday we noticed a few bears in windows so now my husband has put one in our front window. What we did notice though were rainbows drawn on driveways and paths with chalk. Evidently according to DIL it is all over FB, to make people feel happy.

Thanks for the hints for making stock. Perhaps my problem is we have a gas stove which as you say is difficult to get to a very low simmer. I will have another go though.

This morning we had a lovely surprise - our      DIL and granddaughters walked around and stood out on the footpath waving and calling out to us. It was wonderful to actually see them in person even if we didn’t get to hug them.

My son will have his test this afternoon at the local Laverty's blood letting office. Says it will be two days for results. He doesn't think it's the COVID-19 virus. Work is the only place he 'socialises' and he doesn't go out except shopping for necessities. To the best of his knowledge no one else from his work is exhibiting any symptoms. Just a wait and see for he and me.

Well done - sounds like a successful morning getting everything you needed.  No name brands for clothes and sneakers anymore, name brands for toilet paper is the new "in" thing. And you hit the jackpot.  Although I do prefer Aldi's double size rolls.

oh dear, I'm not in your jigsaw puzzle class, I'm afraid.  My speciality was finding all the edges, then finding all the pieces with the same ins and outs, or just ins, you'll know what I mean.  Then I used to take one piece of puzzle to keep, so I could put the last piece of puzzle in to the finished masterpiece.  I had to stop that once they were all on to me!  For years after, if a piece of a puzzle was missing, they'd ask "do you have it, mum?"

We've had every kind of puzzle known to man over the years - all shapes and sizes up to 3,000 pieces (we had our limits), from no picture, to all the one shape (lost my job on that one), mystery ones, where you got to read a book at the same time, and ones you got to glue together at the end.  I don't know anyone who wants a puzzle on their wall, do you?  I used to buy some overseas, collapsing the boxes to remake at home.  (I was the family expert at that, although I don't think it was enough of a challenge for the others.)

Sorry lyndarra that I got you and your son mixed up.  I hope your son's test comes back negative.  Waiting would be nerve wracking.  I'm not worried about getting the virus, as I'm happy to be let go to save a younger person.  However, I'm terrified of having the test.  Did you see where that wonderful doctor, who gives such excellent coverage of the virus on the ABC, had to do his own test?  His doctor didn't have any protective gear so couldn't risk catching the virus.
