JazzyV Posted September 8, 2021 #76 Share Posted September 8, 2021 (edited) Good afternoon. Thanks for the Daily. Interesting days. Literacy is important. &&&. And I like date nut bread with a cup of coffee. Wise quote. I like Jaeger snitzel. Since my BFF is of German heritage, and we've visited family there several times, I've learned to make many German meals over the years. Jaeger means hunter in German and Jaeger snitzel has a mushroom gravy on it. I'll pass on the drink and wine (give me a Chilean red). I haven't been to today's port. Thanks for the pictures. I spent the morning trying to find out if I needed prior authorization for physical therapy. My specialist ordered it after my MRI showed what it did and due to my back/hip issues, trouble going up stairs, and lower extremity tingling. It's a rainy day here today, and is cooler. @rafinmd You do a great job with the lists, with so much going on with us all. @JAM37 Great to hear that DH continues to improve. @dfish Congrats on the negative test! @VMax1700 It will be interesting to see what you think of the electric car. @Seasick Sailor Sorry to hear your friend's DD's surgery got postponed. It scares me that there might not be room in hospitals for people with other conditions like heart disease, strokes, etc. @Quartzsite Cruiser Great pictures! @Lady Hudson Prayers for your BIL. Prayers for the care list and cheers for the celebration list. Stay safe everyone. We had 450 new cases in the last 24 hours in my county! Seasick Sailor Posted September 8, 2021 #77 Share Posted September 8, 2021 @StLouisCruisers We have a lot of bucks and they do not behave. I went out this morning to clean the bird feeders and our hummingbird feeder and the bird fountain was broken. The feeders were totally empty.. 18

In a large bowl, beat the eggs until foamy. Add the oil, sugar, vanilla and almond extract to the eggs and mix well. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add to the oil mixture and stir until just barely moistened. Add the strawberries and nuts and lightly mix, being careful not to overmix. Pour into a prepared pan and bake until nicely browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 50 minutes to an hour. Thanks for posting the recipe. It sounds really good. I’ll be trying it 🙂
Overhead Fred Posted September 8, 2021 #79 Share Posted September 8, 2021 Greetings from Deer Bay Lake! Our Canadian Customs mandated random covid test results came in yesterday but I did not notice them until just now - Negative as expected! The lake is much quieter now after Labor Day, but will no doubt pick up again on the weekends. We had a brief but substantial rain the other day just when I was getting ready to grill. The sun came out and treated us to this - I ran down to the boathouse looking for the gold but could not find it!
StLouisCruisers Posted September 8, 2021 #80 Share Posted September 8, 2021 This emergency event today reminds me of a disaster on our street on this same date, Sept. 8 but in 2014. I went to bed as normal that night but during the night something awakened me, not sure what. I got out of bed and went to the front windows of my home, opened the plantation shutter and saw lights down on the corner of my street, with smoke hanging in the air. There were fire vehicles and hoses all over the place. I turned off the security system and stepped out on my porch to get a better look. I was horrified to see the house on the corner, 4 houses down was missing the roof of the house, and little flames appearing in some of the walls. I found out later an electrical fire started in a garage electrical outlet about 11 pm. The couple who lived there and their 3 dogs were in the master bedroom with the double doors to the bedroom closed, watching Monday night football. Because they had the doors closed to the room, they hadn't smelled the smoke immediately. By the time they noticed the garage in flames, it was spreading fast. I don't know why there were no smoke alarms going off. They grabbed the dogs and made it out the front door and ran across the street. Right about that time a different neighbor saw the flames from a nearby home and called 911. They fought the fire all night and by dawn they had the fire out. It was a one story house with a full finished basement and a 3 car tandem garage with a golf cart bay. All the vehicles including a classic Corvette the homeowner and his late son had restored were destroyed. But they made it out safe with their pets and that's the most important thing. Photos from following day. They had to start from scratch and build that house over again. It took almost a year for them to get back into the home. Insurance investigations took quite a few months. I always wondered if they found the electrical contractor who installed the outlets at fault. Anyway, how ironic that this is the 7th anniversary of the fire and I was reminded of it by the emergency airlift of someone else. 12

Yes, I miss the Prinsendam and the Veedam, too, inspite of what they did to the stern. Both were our favorite HAL ships, and we enjoyed the unique, small ports they could take us to visit. Sharon in AZ Posted September 8, 2021 #82 Share Posted September 8, 2021 Thank you for the Daily Rich and thank you for your lists Roy. Great collection of days today. This is my second try at posting. My first one went poof. My like button hasn’t been working so I wasn’t able to like any posts but please understand that I have read everyone’s today. I am going to try something different in my settings but I have a question would anyone know if blocking pop-ups makes a difference? Here’s a video that explains what Jager schnitzel means. The difference between Jager schnitzel and just schnitzel is the addition of the mushroom gravy. https://www.foodnetwork.com/videos/sunnys-bk-jagerschnitzel-7195293 One week ago today we ate at Rudi’s Sel de Mer. Everything was excellent. They bring out a little condiment snack dish to start you off with but I forgot to take a picture before I started eating it. dfish Posted September 8, 2021 #84 Share Posted September 8, 2021 (edited) This is a date nut bread recipe that I have used. It is from the St. Luke's Parish Cookbook in Slidell, Louisiana. One of my sisters was living there at the time. We all know Louisiana cooking is supreme and parish cookbooks contain the best recipes. My family gobbled this up. German Christmas Bread 2 1/2 cups sugar 1 tsp salt 1 cup white raisins 4 eggs 1/2 tsp cinnamon 3 1/2 cups sifted flour 2 1/2 cups mashed soft sweet potatoes 2/3 cup fresh orange juice 1 cup Wesson oil 2 tsp sod 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1 cup chopped dates Sift all dry ingredients into a bowl. Add raisins, dates and nuts, mix. Add oil, potatoes and mix well. Add eggs, one at a time and mix well. Grease and flour well four 1 pound coffee cans. Fill 1/2 full. Bake for 1 hour at 350. I use loaf pans now that coffee comes in a bag or plastic container. I don't think either would hold up well in the oven. summer slope Posted September 8, 2021 #85 Share Posted September 8, 2021 Had to return to the computer store. Will post drink now and go back and read. Tuxedo: The Tuxedo, which drew its name, according to bar lore, from the same place as the evening suit—Tuxedo Park, enclave of the elite in upstate New York—is a confusing character. There are actually two Tuxedo cocktails running around, and have been since the early twentieth century. One, generally believed to be the original, contains gin, sherry, and orange bitters, and is bone dry. The other, typically referred to as Tuxedo No. 2, mixes gin, maraschino liqueur, vermouth, and absinthe, and is lightly luscious. Both are good, but No. 2 is perhaps more common. This version comes from Flora Bar, in New York, which does a great job with the drink. Ingredients Absinthe rinse 2 1⁄4 ounces Plymouth gin 1⁄2 ounce Dolin dry vermouth 1⁄4 ounce maraschino liqueur 4 dashes orange bitters Orange twist and cherry Step 1 Rinse a chilled cocktail glass with absinthe and discard the excess liquid. Combine the remaining liquid ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain into the waiting cocktail glass. Garnish with the orange twist and cherry. 18

I'd be afraid to run across one of these big boys while on a stroll through the neighborhood! Oh they can knock a bird feeder over easily or step on it trying to reach. I run across them all the time on our walks and in our front lawn and our neighbours. We are overrun with deer. They won’t attack in 99% of the time. If there is a fawn they may try to scare you away but I haven’t even seen that here. 9

I think they just knocked it over. And yes, deer can be very aggressive, especially during rutting season. 7

I make a bread called Hutzelbrot at Christmas, which is a German Christmas bread. Lots of chopped dried fruits and nuts. It's quite involved, and a lot of work, but tastes wonderful.
