undasea Posted November 27, 2021 #1 Share Posted November 27, 2021 I am soon to go on my first cruise, Dec 5th for 7 days, and wondering, how do you know what Theme Nights there are on a given cruise? I've seen mention of a "White Night" on NCL cruises, but are there other Themes nights that people dress up for? I know I don't have to bring Formal wear and dressing up nice is optional but... Thanks for any advice!
CruiserBruce Posted November 27, 2021 #2 Share Posted November 27, 2021 Are you specifically asking about NCL? Come over to the NCL board, here: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/64-norwegian-cruise-line/ Haven't dressed for a theme night in 25 years. Did do formal nights up until 2019.
Rare Essiesmom Posted November 27, 2021 #3 Share Posted November 27, 2021 You might also ask on your roll calls what other are doing/have done. Ask on the Royal Caribean board also. EM
navybankerteacher Posted November 27, 2021 #4 Share Posted November 27, 2021 If OP is talking NCL, the question of “what should I wear on a theme night” is logically answered : “whatever the hell I want”. 3 1
mjkacmom Posted November 27, 2021 #5 Share Posted November 27, 2021 It’s called the glow party now, just wear something white, I don’t think there is anything else where you’d dress specifically for the event.
Ashland Posted November 27, 2021 #6 Share Posted November 27, 2021 Packing for specifically these possible theme nights is a waste of luggage space. 3
undasea Posted November 27, 2021 Author #7 Share Posted November 27, 2021 Thanks everyone for straightening me out (like the correction on White Night vs Glow Party). I won't worry about special nights then, except I WILL be packing my cowboy boots, just sayin", lol.

iancal Posted November 27, 2021 #9 Share Posted November 27, 2021 We have not bothered with them for years.....whatever the cruise line chooses to call it.

donaldsc Posted November 28, 2021 #11 Share Posted November 28, 2021 (edited) Theme nights are totally silly. Wear whatever you want. Better yet, wear the opposite of what the theme is; i.e. if the theme is white night, wear all black. It’s my first cruise but I guarantee no one wants to see my pasty-ass white legs in boots and wearing swim trunks poolside.
Roger88 Posted November 28, 2021 #14 Share Posted November 28, 2021 I never attended such themed nights, I mean I just hate bringing with some extra pieces of clothing just for one night. I would rather have a light bag with me. Its much more comfortable to travel this way

iancal Posted November 28, 2021 #16 Share Posted November 28, 2021 It has been years since we even bothered with what was then called formal nights. The chances of us doing it for theme nights is also zero.
rkacruiser Posted November 28, 2021 #17 Share Posted November 28, 2021 I have attended Theme Night parties and have not been dressed for such. I was not alone. For those who wish to do so, fine. (Halloween parties are particularly fun to see some of the costumes before create.) I can dance to the tune of the "Monster Mash" whether I am in costume or not. A stretch to accuse them of being pretenders or putting on airs. It is just a style & mostly regional but less so now days. I think perhaps you correctly categorized it later as a silly answer.

That is probably the only thing I could dance to very well. Haha. I think most of the folks in theme costumes are ship's crew or cruise director's staff. Not that many passengers, I think. I've enjoyed some of the theme nights, but have never dressed in costume either.

"White Night" is now "Glow Night?" How wonderfully progressive and accommodating to the sensitivities of our modern era! Can I meet the requirements of "Glow Night" if I don't wear white but make sure I have a "glow on" at some point during the festivities? 😀
navybankerteacher Posted December 1, 2021 #24 Share Posted December 1, 2021 Back on topic: OP was talking about an NCL cruise. Think about it: how much of a damn do you think the average NCL cruiser will give for "suggested attire"?
iancal Posted December 1, 2021 #25 Share Posted December 1, 2021 (edited) We stopped following cruise line suggestions about special nights when we realized how ridiculous it was for us to to take a break from work and winter, then pack suits and dresses in a suit bag to wear on a winter Caribbean cruise on two or three nights.. It was more like going on a business trip tor me. DW put a stop to it mid cruise years ago and that was the end of it for us. Same for a Halloween or some sort of other theme night from our perspective. Not going to happen. Edited December 1, 2021 by iancal
