Good morning, or at least what is left of it. 

Our room is finally being serviced.  I had hoped to be mostly packed by this time and then be able to enjoy the rest of our last day of the cruise.  C’est la vie!

So we are in Barista’s drinking coffee instead.

Jim’s leg is looking good and the swelling has gone down in his foot.,  So we are in good shape.

Hoping that our flight will be on time tomorrow and we have minimal problems at the Miami airport.

Hope everyone is doing well and not suffering too much from the cold spell.

We have been to the Bay of Islands once on the Volendam on the APEX cruise in 2002.  I posted a few pictures when Whangarei was the port last August.  Since we tendered into Paihia near Waitangi, I will post the pictures I didn't share then.  

 

It was cloudy in the morning when we arrived, but by the afternoon the clouds had burned off and it was a glorious day.  Once off the tender, we walked around town checking the sites and things to do.  We booked a boat tour for the afternoon and took a private drive in the country with one of the locals before the boat trip.  

 

These are pictures of town in the morning and in the afternoon.

 

 

 

 

A few pictures from our drive in the country including a stop at Haruru Falls.  We were lucky that it was in November and there was water flowing over the falls.

 

 

 

 

Our boat tour took us around the Bay and out to the Hole in the Rock, where we actually motored through the hole.

While the fleet report has the Oosterdam at Port Stanley, either they left really early or did not even make port (😪). At 13:30 (local) cruisemapper shows it motoring away from Port Stanley at 17 knots. The weather looked pretty crappy with rain, 20+ mph winds and 3+ meter seas. Oh well, but they are off to the Antarctic peninsula and that the real gem of the trip.

Good morning all!

I guess we're having another "river of rain" because it's been raining hard and will be for the next 4-5 days.  At least it's warmer, up to the low-mid 50's F and the snow is all gone.

 

No fruitcake for us.  I still chuckle about how my MIL would send us a fruitcake every year when we were first married because she thought DH loved it.  No, she must have had him confused with one of her other 5 children lol!  It seems like a person either loves it or hates it.  We fall into the latter group.

 

We go to the Woodland Park Zoo with the grandchildren a lot.  The next time will be January 8 for a family night at "Zoo Lights".  They do an amazing job every year with the lights and animation.  I've never made cut-out snowflakes, but the grandkids make them and put them up on their window.  

 

I'll pass on the drink (sometimes I wonder if I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like the taste of ginger??), red wine and the meal.  Tonight will be (hopefully) the last of the turkey from Christmas 😉  

 

DH will have his second chemo treatment this morning.  It's been frustrating getting some anti-nausea meds prescribed.  This doctor is a specialist (not his regular physician).  DH called twice last week and the nurses said they were leaving messages for the doctor and he never responded.  Then they were closed yesterday....so just now DH called yet again, and this time the nurse was going to see the doctor face to face and get that prescription.  It shouldn't be this hard, and never has been before with any of our other doctors.  Rant over -- !

Good afternoon. Thanks for starting up the Fleet Report/Daily @rafinmd.

I like my fruitbread, but not commercial fruitcake. I like visiting zoos, but haven't been for a while. I haven't cut out snowflakes since grade school. The meal sounds interesting, pass on the drink and the wine.

I've been to NZ, but not Whangerei.

 

We may get to 32F today! It's cloudy out. I plan to go to see the new Whitney Houston movie with BFF, then out to eat. The eye is better today.

I have another list of prayers this morning. My sweet husband came down with a bad cold. We were up half the night. I have Tylenol, emergen C, cough drops and zinc. Tested him for Covid, and has no fever. Thankful to be at Half Moon Key as I won't go to shore.

 

Others on my list are girlfriends and their husbands coming down with Covid after a neighborhood Christmas party. I was told at least a dozen have it.

 

Tomorrow is another turn around day in FLL. We should be able to be back onboard by 11 if everyone shows up for turn around..

 

We had a very nice osso bucco in Canneletto last night. 

 

 

 

 

We are supposed to eat in Pinnacle tonight but I'm going to cancel and hang around our room.

It's pouring rain right now and the gutters are overflowing. It's better than the snow! I do hope it clears up before I have to drive south to Edmonds (north of Seattle) for a Christmas celebration with DH's side of the family. He'll miss out but I'll have his siblings up for lunch once he's home. 

We have a tradition I started probably 20 or more years ago when it was our turn to host Christmas. I picked up a tinned fruit cake and on the bottom noted our names and the date. Then I passed it on to the family who was hosting the next year's celebration. We've continued that tradition and the bottom of the tin is covered with dates and names. We've not opened up the plastic wrap on the fruitcake yet. 

Lots of snowflake cutting over the years. I taught 6th grade for 30+ years and "snow" was the theme in January. I had books of snowflake patterns we'd cut out as well as lots of free form ones. 

 

Today's plan is to be out of the house by 9:30 and head down to see DH for an hour or two then head to Edmonds for a 12:30 - 3:30 get-together. I'll also stop on the way back to see DH. DS and DDIL didn't come to finish opening gifts last night as DDIL had a migraine so they may come today or we'll wait for the weekend.

Many "Zoo Lights" events continue past Christmas and go into the New Year. Animal behavior isn't always enough to get the public to visit zoos in the cold and wet seasons. Zoo Lights has become a pretty popular gimmick and another source of funding for zoos.

It has shown them motoring away for some hours now. Too bad, but the best is still ahead. The much smaller MS Europa seems to be there though, at least the last I checked. We are very fortunate to have made it in every time we've been there.

Remember yesterday morning when I said that the water in the toilet was slightly off?  And then DH ran water in the pink sink last night , and yup, it was "tan" too.  This morning my neighbor called me from work-turns out our neighborhood is under a boil water advisory.  NOt that they would actually put that in the news.  And then we got a phone call from CODERED, but if you dont have a home phone anymore, they wont call.  So at least we are advised  I guess with everyone letting their faucets drip for 5 nights, we drained all the water, and are now sucking in things that dont belong in the water.  So, I am off to walk the dog, as now the water is brown, and a shower is not in the immediate future, get some lunch, and go get some water.

 Our plan is to take the hop on hop off . 
  We were in Tauranga yesterday and had a really great day. Had “hokey- pokey” ice cream for the first time. Delicious! 
 We will be in the Bay of Islands on Friday. Thanks for the pictures! 
   I have to learn how to post pictures- I am very challenged and am on my phone. 
    We are still wearing masks, most are compliant. Heard there were 8 guests with covid. So maybe the masks are working???  We have remained healthy and his whole trip but still have that dreaded long flight home.

Yep, the track shows them going into the harbor and then leaving. Another poster stated that they made harbor, but did not anchor. The MS Europa is only 400 passengers, so I wonder if they are able to actually dock, which would be easier than trying to anchor in the harbor with wind and waves.

If you are using your phone to take pictures, it is very easy to post them.  

 

Click “Add Files”

Tap “Photo Library”

Tap the photo you want to add.  You will see a blue check mark by the photo you selected.

I use an iPhone and can select more than one picture at a time. Hope this helps.
