marshhawk Posted January 20, 2023 #26 Share Posted January 20, 2023 Good Friday Morning Daiyites! The computer says its 42 and sunny. Yesterday was so warm, with a warmish wind, that I opened the den windows and had fresh air come blowing into the house. Cat fur flying everywhere! We had a bit of a cat emergency yesterday. Both DH and I sat down to start work at 1, and in about a half hour the office manager cat, Neko starting getting very squeamish, and started howling, and tried to put a paw in her mouth as if she wanted to dig something out of her mouth. DH said we should take her to the vets, as she really has not been eating well. I called the vet, and they could see her at 3:30 yesterday or Monday at 10. We stopped work and got to the vets. She took a look, and came back and said, that the cat had some kind of either infection behind her last teeth, or a tumor, but they couldnt tell because it was so swollen. She said to the cat it felt like s bad sore throat. They gave her a shot of steroids, and an antibiotic, and she goes back in 2 weeks to see if it's a tumor, but they couldn't verify yesterday due to swelling. They were amazed at how the cat was so friendly and purring, and DH and i looked at each other, wondering if they were looking at our cat... New rules at the vets, fur parents are not allowed in the examination rooms. If you miss an appointment, they will charge you 25 bucks, if you are 15 minutes late to your appointment, they will cancel you. We got home and I went back to finish my shift, and then "went" to my other job. There were still problems with dialing, but I was getting through to folks, and then I get a text from that boss that I need to sign off and quit for the day. Well the other boss said I could go back and work -they didnt care about phone problems, and lo and behold, on my first day back after a year with the campaign, I got a 1500.00 sale.! Wow! On the other hand, DH's campaign ends on Saturday. My coordinating boss (my boss who hired me years ago) texted about David Crosby, wanted to make sure I was OK, as I was a very and still am a huge CSN fan. He was also surprised that DH hadnt been added to another campaign, as he had been told that he had.. from the same boss who transferred me last year telling the new boss that I was completely free to be transferred when he knew I worked for someone else. Sorry I know, too much stupid info. Any way... When there is tofu in something, I give it to DH. I love penguins, and I'm not sure what buttercrunch is, Like a Heath bar? 23

marshhawk Posted January 20, 2023 #28 Share Posted January 20, 2023 Friends, I have HAL questions...and of course it's about food. Is the MDR open every day for breakfast? Do you prefer the Lido buffet? When is the MDR open for lunch? (that may be a dumb question, but I dont know) Would you book a specialty restaurant on embarkation day? What is your favorite meal on a HAL ship? Inquiring tummies want to know.

MDR open every day for Breakfast. Lido buffet is good but subjective. MDR open for lunch on sea days. Booking specialty restaurants depends on length of cruise. Less than 14 days I would pre book. More than 14 days when I board, assuming not a 7 day b2b. Favorite meal PG Filets and Beef Tenderloin in Tamarind. MDR is open for breakfast every day, including disembarkation day. It's open for lunch on sea days - and sometimes on embarkation day. If embarkation day is a Wednesday or Sunday, I book Canaletto. We have open rather than fixed dining - that could affect your decision. It took awhile to get DH to try MDR based on our experience with fixed dining dress requirements in 1995 and 2008. Now he liked going there in the evening but not for breakfast or lunch. Maybe some day ...... 20
Rare kazu Posted January 20, 2023 #32 Share Posted January 20, 2023 Thanks for our TGIF Daily, Roy. I’ll happily join with the fellow cheese lovers. Today’s wine sounds great - thanks @cat shepard But today’s port? OMG - yes it’s a great spot and I’ve visited but my memories are a tad tarnished and I’ll pass on my last visit in the hospital there 😉 Snowing here (again) - another storm ‘sigh’. Hoping my snow removal guy improves with this one or I am going to have to get someone to remove their signage and get my old guy back, if possible. @marshhawkHope all goes well with Neko and it’s not a tumour. We haven’t been allowed in examining rooms either since covid, but thankfully they made exceptions when the time came to send Miko and Marley over the Rainbow Bridge. I could never let them die alone with neither of us there 😢 Prayers for everyone on the Care list & for those that need them - especially Kathi and a toast to those on the Celebratory list. Have a good Friday everyone !! 26 4

Concur with the others - MDR open every day for breakfast. Lido is a good option for breakfast - especially if it is not at a busy time. MDR can take a long time, depending on your ship. If you are on a Pinnacle Class ship - consider buying Club Orange. Found that dining room very nice, good service & food and their specials were good. MDR was open every day for lunch on our sailings - both port and sea days - but it’s the same menu every day. a lot of people book specialty on embarkation day because MDR can be a bit discombobulated. We normally preferred to go to MDR (did fixed dining) and meet our waiters, etc. If I were doing any time dining, I would do a specialty restaurant as there will most likely be a wait and a bit of confusion. Quartzsite Cruiser Posted January 20, 2023 #36 Share Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) Good morning from a cold (for us, chilly for those in the north, and balmy for those in or near the frozen tundra) central Texas. It is partly sunny, 40F, and fortunately with no wind. Our predicted high is supposed to be 56F. It could be worse. I think DH has had buttercrunch, but I'll pass. We both like cheese, but sorry Graham @grapau27 but not Stilton. Penguins are interesting birds and deserve our help with their environment. I think Jerry Seinfeld nailed having at two year old. I always said having dogs was like having a two year old, but without the whining when it was time to go back inside. We'll pass on the meal, drink and wine today. I still don't know what we'll be having tonight. We have been to Puerto Vallarta more times than I can remember, and eight times since January 2020. I'll look for the pictures I posted last October. @smitty34877 Terry, I made the Mexican beef and rice dish last night and it was a hit. I made the last one on Debbie's @dfish list, but with a couple of changes. I wanted one that cooked the rice in the dish, and that one along with the first one did that. Yesterday, I could not find the packaged taco seasoning at the store, and forgot to look in the Mexican food section. I found a taco seasoning recipe on All Recipes, and it worked well. To get the 1.25 ounces of seasoning, I doubled the recipe. In addition to the Rotel, I added a small can of diced green chilis, both undrained. Since the seasoning used quite a bit of salt, I omitted the salt in the recipe and the fresh cilantro. Also, I went with a four cheese Mexican blend for the topping. I knew there would be leftovers, so we added sour cream to our servings, and it helped tame the red pepper flakes for me. We had the avocado on the side and omitted the diced tomato. I'm still trying to figure out a vegetarian version without using tofu. Two things I noticed. It took a little longer for the cheese to melt, and like lasagna, it needs to rest a bit before serving. @ottahand7 Thank you for your pictures from La Serena. @mamaofami Carol, I'm sorry your wonderful doctor is moving too far away for monthly drives. @smitty34877 Terry, that is good news that DSIL cleaned the alarms, and they were all quiet last night. @aliaschief Bruce, happy you got a good report from the cardiologist. @Colorado Klutch Welcome to the Fleet/Daily, which is a very friendly, supportive place. I hope we see you often. Yes, I also think the BHBs are beautiful. @Mr. Boston I'm glad your boss was happy with your retirement announcement. @marshhawk Annie, I hope Neko does not have a tumor, and that the meds help. I think I followed what you were saying about the bosses, but I don't see how anyone keeps things straight with that system. We do anytime dining, and often book a specialty restaurant on embarkation night to avoid the usual hassles. On the Koningsdam last spring, while we had open seating, they gave us a fixed table at 6pm which worked well. We are almost never up when the MDR is open for breakfast, and the lido works well for breakfast. There are a lot of choices in the Lido, too, just no fresh squeezed orange juice. We're still keeping Patricia, Jacqui, Sarah, Tana, and Kathi in our thoughts. Lenda Edited January 20, 2023 by Quartzsite Cruiser 20
marshhawk Posted January 20, 2023 #37 Share Posted January 20, 2023 We are on N. Amsterdam, and have been told that Club Orange would not be worth it for us. BFF chose any time dining (after my last experience with that I changed my next carnival cruise to assigned) . But he did not want to do that, because of excursion times. It's an Alaskan cruise, I was hoping that there would not be too much having to dress up. I know about dinner dressy, but besides arriving in my PJ's how dressy do we have to be for breakfast and lunch?

Quartzsite Cruiser Posted January 20, 2023 #39 Share Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) We have visited Puerto Vallarta at least 14 times on several cruise lines but mostly on BHBs. I have tried to find pictures that are different, but there is at least one repeat. I'll start with pictures of the Malecon Los Arcos at the end of the Malecon The end of the Malecon on the land side And of course these guys Statues on the Malecon Some sand carvings on the beach. All that work, and it gets washed away at high tide. The small market area near the pier. The area around dock 3 and the gate where it is easy to reach Wal-Mart and the mall. A small bull ring across from the gate by dock 3 The Mall Looking across from dock 3 to dock 1 and the new cruise terminal in the day time and at night. Seasick Sailor Posted January 20, 2023 #40 Share Posted January 20, 2023 0Good morning Fellow Daily-ites! We joined our MDR neighbors in Canelletto last night and the food was delicious! Special request for osso bucco.. A beautiful day in Barbados today! Another clipper passed us as we were docking. Look Graham! One of your favorite cruise lines are our neighbors! It's crazy busy again in the port. We were waitlisted and never got the tour, so Allen wanted to stay at Sea View Pool and have coffee. I was able to catch a bus into the terminal in a minute, cabbed it downtown ($3) but not realizing I could have walked it in 15 minutes. I bought several adorable outfits for our baby great nephew, and some trinkets for friends. I walked back to the cruise terminal and got a "private" ride back to the ship and a mini tour from my bus driver. So, I spoke to one of the officers regarding the Sea View Pool with kids swimming in it. One sign says kids under 16 require adult supervision and another says no kids under 18. The kids have water wings and noodles. We were told they "discourage" kids but don't kick them out if they are in the pool with a parent.. So far there are no screamers! Prayers sent for our friends on the prayer list. Hoping the list starts shrinking. I started with the cruise hack yesterday. Every cough is sounding the same it seems! Have a great day. Be kind. 22

durangoscots Posted January 20, 2023 #42 Share Posted January 20, 2023 Good morning. A bit warmer here today.... 16F when we walked. But it is cloudy and a few snow flakes are drifting down. Our local guru says 2-4 inches... hoping he is wrong and there is less but only time will tell. High will only be in the mid-20's. I will skip the tofu ... I have nothing against it but it does not like me. Have been to PV a couple of times and enjoyed it very much. I can eat cheese anytime. Keeping all who need them in my prayers - both people and critters. My problems seem small in comparison. Off to follow along with some cruises and then continue to work on sorting the mess in my living room. Made the mistake of opening some drawers. Where did all this stuff come from? Rare GeorgeCharlie Posted January 20, 2023 #43 Share Posted January 20, 2023 Last month we were very fortunate to be able to appreciate penguins in their natural habitat. Firstly, that it was a nice day, so we able to get ashore in the Falkland Islands – which is normally an achievement in itself! And secondly, that we were able to use Falklands Helicopter Services to easily get out and see the penguins. This meant, rather than spending 2 plus hours getting to Volunteer Point in a 4x4 vehicle, the trip by helicopter was about 20 minutes. King Penguin nesting site at Volunteer Point. King Penguin chick still in it's winter coat. Then, seeing we still had lots of time, we were also able to fly out and visit a colony of Rockhopper penguins. Rockhopper - "The penguin with an attitude". By the way - the cost to fly out to Volunteer Point, was the same as what the ship charged to go by 4x4!! 30

Hope all are enjoying themselves on their cruises.🚢 Today's port is Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and it was listed here once before on Oct. 19, 2022. Puerto Vallarta is a great little city and we've enjoyed our 3 visits there. 2006 on the old Regal Princess, 2015 on Ruby Princess, and 2016 on Westerdam. My photos are after Rich's link. On March 29, 2016 we were on a Westerdam Panama Canal cruise and had a nice day ahead of us in Puerto Vallarta. Here is our welcome committee. Did you notice this lady hugging a donkey? We got off the ship and got right on a local bus to the scenic downtown area. The Malecon still appeared empty. But the performers on the 50 foot pole (they are called Voladores de Papantla) were already out and we were impressed by their performance. We walked around looking at all the statues placed there. Views up the streets of this colorful neighborhood. Here is the beautiful Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe It was too early for lunch so we took a walk over the Rio Cuale to Old Town using the hanging bridge. Nice shopping over there. Time to head to Pipi's for lunch. Here we are at Pipi's We did a very similar route with the same activites in 2015 on Ruby Princess but you don't need to see similar photos from that trip. We had quite an enjoyable day there. I highly recommend visiting Puerto Vallarta if you can. I absolutely love PV!!!!

Rare Vict0riann Posted January 20, 2023 #48 Share Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) Good morning, Dailyites! Thanks Roy, for doing double duty these days, with Rich cruising around the world, and also thanks to everyone, every day, for all the interesting, though sometimes sad, news. Patricia, Tana, Jacqui, Ukraine, even Neko, so many prayer-worthy subjects. I do have a few words to add about PV, as we were just there a week ago and also the week before! There is a new cruise terminal, which is just horrendous. You have to walk for miles through little shops and kiosks of tourist junk, then, just when you think you have reached the end and can head for the ship, you come to a new section of "duty free" goods, and have to walk another mile or so through alcohol and perfume, like an airport duty free. Then, when you finally get outside you're miles away from the ships, and have to wait for an open air trolley to take you to the ship, with hundreds of others from other ships also waiting. Then a single trolley comes by that takes 8 people at a time.... The second time we were there, I stayed on the ship. (I may be exaggerating a bit on the mileage, it just seemed that way!😁) Pat said on the second visit, when they had a private tour, they were able to by-pass the terminal, so definitely try to do that. On the HAL tour we took on the first leg, the guide said he "had to" take us to the terminal. @marshhawk, Annie, through my investigation, breakfast in the Lido is tops - at least for pancakes. The pancakes in CO and the MDR may be more beautifully presented, but in the Lido they are made fresh right in front of you, and the same goes for other breakfast items, like eggs, etc., Also, the MDR staff does not all seem to be fully trained or forgetful, and often don't bring around pastries, etc., whereas in the Lido you can see everything set out and pick whatever you want! We had CO on the NA, and agree, it's not worth it. If there were a dedicated area in the MDR, it would, but you have to sit in the crowded general seating, and that is where we got Covid, I'm sure. Try to organize something in the upper level of the MDR. I think that may be fixed seating, but, perhaps you can just pop in and see if you can get a table. One couple we sat with for dinner one evening said that is what they did on occasion. BTW, congrats on that $1,500 sale! Oh, and PS, we usually book Tamarind for the first night. the MDR is chaos! Sharon in AZ Posted January 20, 2023 #50 Share Posted January 20, 2023 Good morning. My post just went poof and it never restored like it usually does. Grrrrr. I won’t try to recreate it again but I was telling Annie @marshhawkwhat I like for lunch in the MDR. The apple bacon pannenkoek and the Cobb salad are good. The salad bar in the Lido is good too and customizable. We try to book specialty restaurants when the MDR menu isn’t appealing but that’s hard to predict ahead of time. If I can’t find anything I like for an entree on the MDR menu I make a meal out of appetizers and the Caesar salad and sometimes add salmon to the salad. Their salmon is always good. Carolyn @Cruising-along, I am so sorry to hear about your cousin and the results of the MRI yesterday. Prayers for you and your family. Have a great day everyone! 16
