Rare KKB Posted July 11, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 11, 2023 I see a lot of threads about Celebrity allowing vaping in casinos on a couple ships even tho they are NS casinos (which I love). Overall I am rarely bothered by smoke in casinos--most in Vegas have pretty good "smoke eaters" But there have been 3 ships in the last 4 years where smoke was so intolerable that I just didn't play or wore a mask! (I have sailed 29 cruises on 20 different ships) NCL Getaway (Encore wisely made a smoking casino area separate) Discovery Princess (strangely have not noticed it on other Princess ships!) MSC Preziosa (Europe cruise) Anyone else notice it bad on particular ships?

Flatbush Flyer Posted July 11, 2023 #3 Share Posted July 11, 2023 The casinos on Oceania ships are non-smoking (and that includes vaping). In fact, there are only two spots on their ships where smoking/vaping is allowed: one corner of the pool deck and an enclosure in a corner area of the largest bar.
TheOldBear Posted July 11, 2023 #4 Share Posted July 11, 2023 I remember Steve Payne listing some differences between the QM2 and the original Queen Mary. One was, on QM2 smoking is only permitted in two spaces, on the Queen Mary smoking was forbidden in only two spaces.
ldubs Posted July 11, 2023 #5 Share Posted July 11, 2023 It was pretty bad in the casino on a recent Ruby Princess cruise. Additionally, it was spilling out into adjacent public areas like the International Cafe.

I believe Celebrity is the only mainstream lines where the casino is fully NS (except for a couple allowing vaping...I don't suspect that would be a huge issue). NCL has some newer ships with the smoking casino room...but with the service cuts there the last few months not sure how much longer we will be sailing them. Really didn't notice it in March--I'm sure it depends to some extent on passengers onboard a particular sailng.

Sometimes it was heavy in Internt'l cafe and other times I noticed nothing.

Depending on what you want/do beyond the very limited base fare on a mass market ship, you may want to compare actual “bottom lines” in comparisons with Oceania (which includes even air tix or an air credit) or even Azamara. I will miss the jazz club on oasis class but they recently changed it into a nonsmoking casino area , will sail on harmony in November.

Yeah it’s still a significant price difference, I’ve looked
BruceMuzz Posted July 11, 2023 #14 Share Posted July 11, 2023 I never encounter any Casino Smoke. I won't sail on a ship that has a casino - and I certainly would never go into an ocean-going casino. Ship-based Casino odds are for suckers only.

Of course ALL casinos’ odds are for suckers only — the more you play, the more certain it is that you will ultimately come out behind. Yes - even the (obviously memory impaired) folks who post on these threads about how they regularly come out ahead.
Szt Posted July 12, 2023 #16 Share Posted July 12, 2023 One of the reasons some people cruise is so they can smoke and gamble in hazy peace. That was my parents' philosophy. I have found cruises in Europe or with lots of Europeans tend to have more smokers. It is what it is. Just avoid the smoky areas and everyone can enjoy the way they choose. Aquahound Posted July 12, 2023 #17 Share Posted July 12, 2023 The absolute worst casino smoke I ever encountered was on Carnival Liberty. I'm not a gambler so it shouldn't bother me but, on that ship, the main fore/aft corridor went through the casino, so it was hard to avoid. It's one of many reasons I haven't cruised Carnival since. DarrenM Posted July 12, 2023 #18 Share Posted July 12, 2023 isnt it just ridiculous that anywhere in 2023 allows smoking at all inside any room/buiding etc?

Rare Hlitner Posted July 13, 2023 #20 Share Posted July 13, 2023 The worst we encounted, in recent years, was on the MSC Divina. That ship's casino (where they allow smoking) has a decent bar on the deck above, that is open to the casino (like a mini atrium). The bar/lounge is where we enjoyed an excellent rock duo (from Italy) during a two week cruise. But there was nothing to stop the smoke drifting up from the casino (one deck below) and we found it quite annoying. We have had other smoke issues on the HAL ships that still allow smoking in the casino. I have long said that walking through those smoking casinos was kind of like passing through a dirty ashtray. Does Azamara have casino’s? Dh likes a flutter on board & we sail celebrity as we like the vibe & non formal dress code. We will probably be looking to move after our next cruise with them if the vaping policy goes fleetwide. Looking at Oceania. Considering MSC Yacht club as well. Actually HAL's three newest ships (Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam) allow smoking in the casino for active players, along with their two oldest ships (Volendam, Zaandam). Smoking is not allowed in any of their four Vista-class or two Signature-class ships. Strange and inconsistent -- but that's nothing new for HAL!
Rare PurpleHays Posted July 14, 2023 #23 Share Posted July 14, 2023 The NCL Epic had it's casino in one of the main passages on the deck. No way around it if you wanted to walk from one end of the ship to the other, and it was open to other floors. It reeked. I only sailed on it once, never again. HAL recognizes that a major customer base of theirs is 65 and older - and a significant portion of that age group are hopelessly committed smokers —- who HAL does not want to write off.
