Chrisstew007 Posted July 25, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2019 Having seen an earlier thread regarding minibar bills and possibly vindictive staff we are reluctantly asking this question. We love Celebrity as it suits us very well compared to other lines we have tried. A couple of months ago we sailed in a suite which was the first time having won a move up bid. We are a very easy going couple and avoid confrontation on holiday as life is to short and generally at home our stress levels are to high. The butler we had presumably knew we upgraded so treated us with the contempt we deserved. We had no need for a butler and the room steward was fantastic, she was obviously in fear of him. We brought along 2 Ipads but as we only had a single WiFi package we only used one and put one in a back pack, yes it should have been in the safe but that was full of more valuable things. That spare one went missing. We reported this to GR and they proposed to send security to search our room, that suited us fine as we had both looked 5 or 6 times and the stateroom is not a 6 bedroom house! A couple of days later security had not appeared, but the ipad did, in the bag that we had both checked several times, we reported the good news straight away to call the search off. I am meticulous about bring two copies of all the documentation required to get us abroad and to get us home. On the last night our printed off boarding passes for the flight home were missing. I went to the IT suite and printed copies off so no drama, unless I had not checked.
Rare mom says Posted July 25, 2019 #2 Share Posted July 25, 2019 Have been cruising for a couple of decades, mostly X for the last several years. Have never had anything "go missing". Except for DHs sunglasses- but he's always misplacing them.

If you had and continued to be treated "as you deserved" as a move up Suite passenger you should have discussed this with the Suite Manager. Only once in over 100 Celebrity cruises did I ever experience an employee, a Stateroom Attendant, whose attitude needed adjustment. Thank goodness your missing items turned up.
Alakegirl Posted July 25, 2019 #4 Share Posted July 25, 2019 I had friends who said a camera went missing. They swore it was in the safe. Everybody looked in the safe, nobody saw it. Then a couple of days later tshe reached in and there was a small piece of cloth on the base of the safe, the camera had gotten shoved under it. At least twelve people said they looked in the safe and nobody saw it, but there it was. Stuff disappears, even in plain sight!
hiccups Posted July 25, 2019 #5 Share Posted July 25, 2019 After our recent X cruise, someone posted on our Roll Call after they returned home that they feared some jewelry had been swiped from their cabin. They reported later that they found the jewelry in a bag they had searched multiple times. They had contacted X to let them know it was missing, and then again when they found it. I would be surprised if any butler or steward was aware of whether someone has won an upgrade bid, or what they have paid.

wv4891 Posted July 25, 2019 #7 Share Posted July 25, 2019 Strange things happen in those safes, under the liner. On the same cruise I found two credit cards under there. One belonged to a Brit so I turned that into Guest Relations, the other belonged to a good friend who was in our cabin the cruise before. I gave her card back to her, as she was doing a B2B with us. We have lost cameras twice while cruising, once in a cab going to HNL and the other on a tour in Akarora. We were able to work with the tour operator and get that camera sent to us. The one in the taxi, who knows. Never "lost" anything in the cabin.
wwcruisers Posted July 25, 2019 #8 Share Posted July 25, 2019 OP -- glad to hear that your missing items 'reappeared'. And, no -- I've been sailing X for 10 years, and (luckily) have never had anything 'go missing' from any room or suite that I've sailed in. You also don't hear of things like that occurring very often, here on the X boards. What I actually found more disturbing about your post was your description of your butler -- I think you summed him up as contemptuous of you, and intimidating to your room steward. I know you said that you are conflict-averse, but you should know that EVERYONE on cruise ship has a boss. Any problems you encountered with your butler could have been quietly brought to the attention of either the Michael's Club Concierge, or the Suite Manager. Absolutely NO excuse for that kind of behavior -- toward a guest, or other employees!
varoo Posted July 25, 2019 #9 Share Posted July 25, 2019 We have been cruising with Celebrity for years and always leave our computers, cameras, binoculars, etc. out in plain sight. We have never had anything go missing. On our very first cruise long ago, we brought along a netbook that we locked up in the safe. But we quickly discovered that it was a pain unlocking and re-locking the safe all the time to put it in or take it out, so we stopped doing that and just left it out on the desk in the cabin. Whenever we start to think that something has disappeared, it always turns out that we simply misplaced it. Years ago, we once thought that we had lost a pack of jewelry. (We only travel with costume jewelry, so the loss was an annoyance, not a major financial loss.) Months later, I pulled a suitcase out of the closet, getting ready to pack for another trip, and the missing jewelry was still in it.

As the ship rocks, things inside the safe shift and move around, making it easy for small items to get lost. Easy solution -- everything that we put into the safe goes inside a ziplock bag that is zipped closed. Makes it easy to empty the safe too, if we need to change cabins or at the end of the cruise -- just pull out the ziplock bags.
julia Posted July 25, 2019 #11 Share Posted July 25, 2019 ok... legit question here.... how on earth would a butler know "who paid what" for their suite?? They have no access to that information, correct? The "contempt" should have been addressed immediately, firmly and pleasantly... and not simply tolerated.

Just dropped our stuff off leaving our bag with lotion and a few other things on the desk in the new cabin. The only thing that was out on a surface . Fogfog Posted July 25, 2019 #14 Share Posted July 25, 2019 (edited) Not cabin related--but friends were on an RCCL cruise and a zip line went awry--they had video footage of everything as their son was on it... and his cell phone with that footage went missing... They are certain it was taken by RCCL crew Edited July 25, 2019 by Fogfog
Rare Georgia_Peaches Posted July 25, 2019 #15 Share Posted July 25, 2019 Never had anything go missing on Celebrity. I've left my iphone and ipad on a charger in the cabin. I've left port purchases on the sofa, I've left slot machine tickets on the counter....always been there when I returned. As for the butler situation, like others have said, I highly doubt that he knew you "won" your cabin in the bidding process. Rude behavior is rude behavior regardless of the fare and should not be tolerated...ever.
Chrisstew007 Posted July 25, 2019 Author #16 Share Posted July 25, 2019 Just to clarify, we are not saying ' the butler did it' that would be totally unfair without proof that we do not have. My wife and I are totally compos mentis, I am a managing director and she is a highly paid professional we have cruised at least 40 times before without an issue so perhaps not qualified to have an opinion. We had no need for a butler so why would we complain. We are talking about a large Ipad not a ring or camera. I am not saying that we were on the edge but for those that have been on it they will know how small the safe is. I would like to hear form the few, if any, as opposed to the millions that have not that will drown out this thread.

George C Posted July 25, 2019 #18 Share Posted July 25, 2019 I had a ring that went missing on a ncl ship a couple of decades ago really disliked how they handle it , for that and other reasons would never sail them again. No other issues in 65 cruises.

VERY FEW staff would be willing to risk immediate termination over theft. Here's one for thought..When cabins are being cleaned, it's very easy to "drop" in quick, especially if the attendant is in the bathroom cleaning. I'll bet that's where most theft occurs. Leave your valuables in the SAFE!!

Leave your valuables in the SAFE!! I also doubt that very many staff folks would risk termination over theft. I don't know if "keithm" has cruised with Celebrity recently, but several years ago the carts used by the stateroom attendants were significantly re-designed. They now sit just in the doorway such that they don't stick way out into the hall, but block entry to the stateroom too. Once, while the stateroom attendant was working in our cabin, my husband had to drop by the cabin to pick up something he wanted, and the attendant had to move the cart to let him in. Rare chemmo Posted July 26, 2019 #23 Share Posted July 26, 2019 (edited) I don’t understand how you could have printed your return boarding passes before you cruised....In our experience you can’t print them off until 24/36 hours before flying...Are you sure you didn’t just have your e-tickets with you? This would be a very odd thing for anyone to take... As others have said, easy to miss things....It is unusual that you waited a couple of days and security hadn’t visited. One couple we chatted to on a recent cruise had reported a camera missing. They were fairly sure (but not certain) it had gone from their room. Security visited them immediately to take details, suggested a few places in their room to recheck and contacted them by telephone the next day to say their camera had not been handed in. Their room attendant was upset by the missing camera. They decided the most likely scenario was that they had taken it out of the cabin at some point. They didn’t let the lost camera spoil their holiday. They had been impressed by the actions and attitude of the security team. They eventually found the camera near the end of the cruise in one of their Celebrity dressing gown pockets! At that point they both remembered taking a picture of their beautifully set out room service breakfast! I mention this simply to show how easy things can disappear and reappear...By the padded nature and pocket sections of a back pack I can believe you could search and miss... Some butlers are better than others but you really should have reported yours if his manner and attitude was discourteous. I honestly don’t think butlers know or give two hoots about how much you paid for your suite! They do care about earning their tips and even more importantly being scored highly on the cruise survey. Why do you think he was possibly ‘vindictive’? Had you said anything to him about his manner or attitude or removed his automatic gratuities? If he had felt you were going to get him into trouble I would have thought he would have tried to placate you rather than become vindictive. Quite simply he had too much to loose. OP I am genuinely sorry your first suite experience was marred by missing and returning iPad and a poor butler ....Not a usual experience. When we don't find them immediately, we tend assume someone has taken them. This happened to me but later I recalled I put them in a different location in the room. The only item that I never found were my eye glasses and no one would take them. I seriously doubt any employee would risk their job on a ship by taking an inexpensive iPad. Chrisstew007 Posted July 26, 2019 Author #25 Share Posted July 26, 2019 I have just printed off our boarding pass for a flight from Barcelona when we finish our celebrity cruise mid September 2019. We can check in and print the pass up to 60 days in advance. The boarding pass had no value but would make it awkward at the airport. I printed the replacement passes at the IT suite on the last evening, all the other documents such as Taxi bookings and airport parking booking were not touched. We never remove auto grats and are always generous to those that have served us well like the waiters in the casino. The additional tip which would have gone to the butler went to the room steward as she was excellent and very thorough.
