Bravo Celebrity for realizing that there is indeed an audience for ballet at sea. Can we hope to see a similar program being introduced to bring opera aboard?

The performance on Equinox included a soloist that sang an operatic piece.  It was interesting--she started with a regular song and I was kind of "meh" on her voice.  But when she sang opera, wow!  That was her wheelhouse.

They have had opera soloists on board.  But never a full opera.  Would guess that might break the bank.

My Celebrity cruises to date have offered neither ballet nor opera, but with two more booked, maybe there's still hope. :classic_mellow:

I think most people would be happier if they spent the money from the ballet on improving more conventional entertainment that would appeal to a larger group.

Everyone's entitled to be wrong from time to time 😉

We have the good fortune of cruising on Summit back to back for these performances.

It's so nice to experience a different form of entertainment. For those who don't like the occasional show, it's not as if all the standard stuff will go away. There will always be different forms of entertainment to complain or gripe about.

Perhaps it's a sneaky way to get more passengers into the casino at that time... 😉

Love your explanation, Arno.  Me, I'll be at the Ballet.  I have always wanted more classical performances.

They used to feature great string groups and soloists ( non electrified violin)  A few were so well received in lounges, they were featured for afternoon performances in the theater. Bring them back!

But  we will pass on the accordion players!

When I was younger, I would have been a naysayer. But that changed with my first job in radio, one of my tasks was to be the board operator for the Metropolitan Opera from NYC. I thought I was going to absolutely hate it.
But. They would explain in great detail what was going to happen, who was who and I came to enjoy it very much. I now listen to classical music often and credit something that I was not looking forward to, for opening my eyes.

Well said.  And bring back the harpist too!  She also played at a matinee.

If they wanted to push people to the casinos they would put the early Edge shows throughout the fleet that essentially was all current music;)

We loved it, others appeared not to.

We might enjoy a polished, professional ballet performance of the ABT as a choice of entertainment on a cruise over production shows that can range from very good to cringingly awful.  (MHO).

However, I am thinking that the dancers could be affected by rough seas causing the ship to pitch and roll.

I am aware that production shows can and do remain as part of the evening entertainment on ships during some rough seas, but dancing on point in a ballet performance could test a dancer’s ability  and balance- just a thought.

We enjoyed most of what we saw...walked out on only 1 on EDGE..Theater was amazing and very good sound system.

Only complain is that  the theater is too small...esp for  the later show.

Yes.. that was always a treat, even at boarding time. Bravo!   Harpist, bubbly, white gloves, escorted to the stateroom.( not just suites)

Then all of a sudden, mgmnt changed  and we were greeted at the entry by a horrible DJ and a bongo player.  Thought we were on the wrong ship...Nope..just a revised interpretation of modern luxury!

Why is ballet competing with funding for "more conventional entertainment" (defined I guess by what you prefer, and you are most people)??  It is just an expanded choice on some ships on limited cruises.  Whether you or I like ballet or not, what is wrong with that?  If on a cruise, if I am not interested in that night's show, I find many other things to enjoy.

It is my assumption that the ABT is a much more expensive option than a singer and juggler.  There is only a certain amount of funds that Celebrity allocates toward entertainment, so yes the ABT is competing with other entertainment options.  I would rather see the money spent on better conventional options.

I think that's a huge assumption that it costs more to have two relatively unknown dancers on any given ship + whatever minor tweaks X is making to host an existing high-class product.

The ABT connection is more about marketing for ABT than it would be as a money-maker for them.  Lincoln Center has a similar partnership with HAL.   The demo for the arts world has lots of similarities to the cruise demo, namely disposable income.

Do you remember “Sin City” that was held in the Celebrity Theater?   It was a burlesque type late adult comedy show and in between acts a pole dancer “stripper” performed.   The pole dancer was probably some staff’s  girlfriend and it was a way to keep her on board with a job.

There will always be hits and misses.  It is great that X is trying different types of entertainment.

Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌅

I agree that this is a win-win. It is highlighting ABT and from the response here, potentially they will gain more paying customers on land. I would assume when it is a partnership, the cost is not outrageous.

When I first saw the ad a few months ago, I thought "What?", but after learning more about it and seeing some reviews, I now hope I will be able to experience this on a future cruise. The marketing is working...🙂

Yep, that's correct.  Me and the vast majority of the passengers.  Most people don't enjoy ballet, it doesn't matter if they are at sea or on land.

On an X cruise a few years ago there was a solo musician show one night. Turned out to be reed instruments only. DH wanted to leave, I said not nice since one main performer. Then he started playing flight of the bumblebee on the sax. We fled - better to leave than laugh hysterically. Most people stayed -something for everyone.

We are on Summit Sept 8. Looking forward to the ballet and also the speaker doing series on astronomy and space exploration who posted on our rollcall.
