MissP22 Posted September 28, 2019 #51 Share Posted September 28, 2019 If switching out a Medallion for a cruse card means I'll have to pull it out each time I want to enter my cabin, forget about it. I love the convenience of having my door unlock automatically when my hands are full. Who cares if they know I'm at the pool or Effie's or in the Show lounge.

You’re on a ship on the middle of the ocean. What exactly are people doing on their cruise to warrant being worried about being tracked?! It’s not the US government who is doing the tracking. I agree too.....I am sure they are the same people who do not use their cell phones because they are tracked, do not drive because of cameras tracking them at every intersection and do not use TV remotes because who knows where that pesky little signal is going when you change channels. We like Princess ships with Medallion service and enjoy the technological progress Princess is making and have no fear of them leaving the "horse and buggy" days of Princess. I guess we must assume they have very well encrypted RFID transmissions. Hopefully. If I am to understand correctly, none of that information is actually stored on the medallion. Rather, it contains a unique code that identifies you to the ship's computer system. The RFID signal is not strong enough to be detected while you are onshore. cruzsnooze Posted September 28, 2019 Author #54 Share Posted September 28, 2019 I posted my experience and did not ask for everyone's opinion of the medallion. I was merely letting people know they can get a cruise card if they desire. 6 3

Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted September 28, 2019 #56 Share Posted September 28, 2019 That’s good to know you can still opt out if you don’t want it. Thank you for sharing how it works if you use the regular old card on one of the Medallion ships.

Your TA has no control of this. After boarding you go to guest services and they will issue you a card. You can use the lanyard from your medallion if you wish to wear your card. Then just lock the medallion in your room safe.

But even this system did not always work and we were sometimes asked our cabin number while sitting at a bar. Hank Hank, this is VERY implausible -- namely that any bartender on Princess would have to ask you for your cabin number. They ALL know your cabin number by heart, at least after the first day!! CruiseVA Posted September 29, 2019 #61 Share Posted September 29, 2019 I remember scanning my Medallion while it was still 'active', there was quite a bit of info, but, no personally identifiable data is stored on it. It basically allows the crew to find you in the computer system using a unique ID. I also remember reading that you can disable the location feature, although the only people that can access your location are crew & anyone that you have given access to it (like your spouse, which you may not want knowing your at the casino, or bar, again! LOL). Seems like it would be handy if you travel with children.

You need to go to guest services which is usually on deck 6. If the crew member says it can't be done just ask for a manager. I did not have to go that far, the crew member at the desk gave me a card instantly. They don't deactivate your medallion that you got at the check in on the dock so just put it in your safe for the duration of the cruise. If you want they can punch a hole in your card and you can use the lanyard from your medallion to wear your card. How do they get your picture on the new card if it is not being done at check in? IF both of us want the card, do we both have to go to the desk? (I know DW will not want to interrupt swimming to do this.)

Both the cruise card and the Medallion have unique identification codes (think similar to a credit card number) that identifies the holder. When the cruise card or Medallion are scanned by another device the unique code is read and used to look up your information on a central computer database. That is where your personal information and photo are stored. Either the cruise card or Medallion coded to you will access the same information stored.

luvseadays Posted September 29, 2019 #65 Share Posted September 29, 2019 Many will love the medallion, some won't, I just wanted to post to people that there is a choice. And thank you for this posting. As to your original post, I did not know that it was even possible to make a choice. We appreciate your help. As a p.s., does anyone know if the Coral is Medallion ready yet?

I can't answer definitively since we both went at the same time and got our cards. Just to be clear, both your medallion and cruise card will be active. SO if you want to go get coffee in the morning and your hands are full you can use your medallion BUT you still have to use your hands to open the door, it doesn't open automatically. So there is no benefit to using the medallion in this situation. Your cruise card is read by the same sensor that reads the medallion and you still need a hand to open the door. Seems they had to verify which signal was ours. In the past they just read our folio number. There were also times when the waiter just wrote down our cabin no. and order on paper, skipping the tablet process. Bar waiter/tenders will only know your cabin no. if you spend lots of time there. I don't think the medallion is working as it was planned.
