casofilia Posted July 18, 2020 #76 Share Posted July 18, 2020 @caribill I think the ones with the best possibility of sailing this year are the ones with all Australia/New Zealand itineraries. Also, these would be limited to residents of those two countries. NO CHANCE; it is likely that the borders will be closed to anyone other than their own citizens and even they will have to go into managed isolation and maybe even pay for the 14 day privilege!!! While NZ remains on top of Covid19; the only cases are returning citizens; Victoria and NSW are in the throes of major outbreaks. Also remember that NCL have already taken the Jewel from the area for the WHOLE of the 2020/2021 summer season. I guess that Princess will be next. So true.....I think Princess should park one it's ships in Fort Lauderdale, San Francisco and San Pedro and run them as a hotel and the people who want a cruise to nowhere just pay to stay on the ship and enjoy what amenities there are and then go home. Princess may be missing a economic bonanza according to some of the people on here who are willing to cruise at any cost just to go on a ship.

I know you're being funny (I hope) but the CDC order would prohibit that activity, of course.

This could be run in a fashion similar to the (now discontinued) Bon Voyage Experience. The rooms would be cleaned to the standards of landside hotels. On board, guests could purchase Future Cruise Credits and make discounted bookings for future cruises. Local staff could be hired and appropriate licenses obtained to allow the bars and casinos to open. For local government agencies this could be a source of revenue from room taxes, as well as liquor sales and gaming proceeds. Every few days the ship would need to go offshore to pump out (similar to what Diamond Princess did in Yokohama), but this could be a chance to let the rooms "rest" between guests. It may not be a huge profit maker for Princess, but if done right it could be a way to advertise cruising to those who are interested. Of course the "never would cruise" crowd won't come board, but they were never going to anyway.

Right let’s pick 2of the most infected states and put a bunch of people in large groups together. I am assuming that this is a joke because it is a recipe for disaster
sunviking82 Posted July 21, 2020 #85 Share Posted July 21, 2020 I would love a private island cruise out of FL or TX. Just hit the cruise lines private island or spaces (like Grand Turk and Ruatan-sp?) along with Princess Cay, Half Moon Cay, etc. . . I would love a week like that after the year we've had. Those "private" islands still belong to a country that might not allow large/small cruise ships to either dock or be in their waters but we can always hope. The private islands could be a viable option for the countries that own them. They could put requirements in place such as: 1. Limiting the number of non-cruise ship staff allowed on the island, and implementing quarantine and testing requirements. 2. Charging the cruise lines a per passenger or per landing fee that would exceed any costs involved. There is a limited market of those avid cruisers who are very keen to be back on board, but I believe there still is a market and it seems this could be done in a safe manner, while still bringing in some much needed revenue to the cruise lines and the countries involved. gardenbunny Posted July 22, 2020 #89 Share Posted July 22, 2020 I asked my TA if she thought anything would sail in 2020 and she said No. There are no guidelines established yet from the CDC or even from the cruise lines to let the CDC even begin to review as possibilities. I have read a lot of genuine articles about the CLIA having meetings, but nothing definitive reported on recommendations. I firmly believe that when cruise lines are allowed to sail that it will be at first only a very limited number of ships and itineraries. Much like the airlines are doing now - reduced planes in use and limited routes and time schedules. Even Delta CEO said he does not see volume returning to pre virus levels until 2022. It is not realistic, even if there would be a vaccine by early 2021, to believe that Princess would start up all 18 ships - or any cruise line begin with a full fleet. This virus has been the largest disruptor of everything all over the entire world - the domino effect has been like a huge tsunami and has left nothing untouched. So sad. I long for the good old days....
jennybenny Posted July 22, 2020 #90 Share Posted July 22, 2020 I happen to look at my Ocean Medallion App. If I go to my Journeys, and click on the details, my cruises for 2020 do not have a muster station listed on them, but the ones for 2021 do have a muster station. Also my travel companions show up for 2021, but not 2020 cruises. I'm guessing it may be an indicator that my booked 2020 cruises are not happening or it could be a Princess glitch. Both are possible.🤷♀️
Rare Smokeyham Posted July 22, 2020 #91 Share Posted July 22, 2020 I enjoy following Gary Bembridge's (https://www.tipsfortravellers.com/ ) weekly video postings on the state of the cruise industry. He has discussed how some cruise lines, in countries such as Germany and Norway, are starting to reopen. They are quite restricted with passengers generally only from the country of origin for the cruise, shorter duration, lower capacity, and the expected social distancing and other requirements. However, as others have said, until we in the United States get a handle on Covid-19 and until the CDC gives clearance then it does not seem that any cruising will be done from American ports. I wonder if the first steps might be California Coastals, or perhaps "Cruises to Nowhere" or possibly something only using the cruise lines private islands? A suspension of the Jones Act would be very helpful in getting the cruise lines restarted so that the requirement that a vessel visit a foreign port would be waived. I think you mean the PVSA. And I think Congress has much more important business facing it than amending the PVSA.
