I wonder if people realize that when they get the vaccine they will still have to wear a mask when they cruise.

Who has told you that? I don't say that you are incorrect but I haven't seen any information about that so I'm interested in how you got that information.

Nobody told me.It was in a report on NBC news recently and I assume other media as well.

It has been widely reported in the US that vaccinations will be like a dimmer switch, not a light switch. Other mitigation measures will still be necessary until such time as herd immunity is achieved. It seems more than reasonable that this will be the case elsewhere.

So you were told by NBC news. Thank you for that information.

Just google "need to wear a mask after Covid vaccine" and take your pick of articles explaining why including this CNBC article (https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/16/fauci-why-still-need-masks-social-distancing-after-covid-19-vaccine.html)

It quotes

  • Dr. Fauci:  Because “even though, for the general population, it might be 90[%] to 95% effective,” said Fauci, “you don’t necessarily know, for you, how effective it is.” Even at those success rates, about 5% to 10% of people immunized may still get the virus.
  • Dr. David Ho, a virologist working on developing monoclonal antibody therapies for Covid-19:  “In addition, the protective effect of a vaccine may take at least one month, if not slightly longer,”...Therefore, for the foreseeable future, we will need to continue our mitigation measures, including wearing masks,” Ho says, noting that precautionary measures will likely last “for much of 2021.”
  • Dr. Bruce Hirsch, an infectious disease specialist:  "many people have strong feelings about vaccines and may not take them, which “will impact the general population from being immune to Covid-19 and prolong the threat of the pandemic.”

I doubt that most cruiselines will require masks if the vaccine is 95% effective and the cruiselines require vaccinations.

Most people will probably not cruise if they have to wear a mask on the ship and if the vaccine is effective the few Covid cases which might occure can be handled in the ports so no reason to interrupt a cruise or quarantine everyone on the ship.

Cruising is not something I really need so if I should need to wear a mask on the ship I rather spend $10000 on something else!

I go to work everyday without a mask so I see no reason to start to wear a mask after I'm vaccinated.

Even if you are vaccinated there is no evidence as yet that you will not pass on the virus.

You seem to have a more cavalier approach to mask wearing than normal, caring humans.

Maybe I just have a more realistic approach.

I will not mention Sweden as an example just because we have much fever death than for example the UK because that doesn't mean that we have done well. I agree that too many has died here too.

It's better to look at Norway. During the first wave almost noone in Norway used a mask and still very few died. That doesn't prove that it's useless to wear a mask but it defenitely prove that it's possible to keep the number of dead down even without masks.

Time will tell if cruiselines will require masks if they also require vaccinations, we don't know yet.

970 deaths per million in the UK vs 740 per million in Sweden.

The UK performance is bad, but given the average age profile in Sweden, plus lack of a large BAME community, I would have expected the Swedish number to be far lower.

As I said I won't use Sweden as example because we have done bad too. Some people have missunderstood before and thought that I think that Sweden has been doing good but I have never said that.

The first wave in Norway is a good example of a country which has succeeded without wearing masks so it is possible to do it.

As I understand it we wear masks and social distance and etc. because we have no other defense against this virus and we don't want to overload the medical systems. Once a vaccine is in place and sufficient people are vaccinated that would, to me, indicate that we no longer need to use the more primitive methods to prevent such overloading. We don't wear masks to protect against other communicable diseases for which we have a vaccine. COVID is here to stay and I don't relish the thought of having to wear a mask in public for the rest of my life (but of course it will be what it will be).

The idea behind wearing masks is not to protect yourself, but to reduce the risk of you infecting other people.

I had to Google what you meant with this. Now I have and I can tell you that we do have a large BAME community and as you say people from that community are overrepresented when it comes to Covid cases, and deaths.

Indeed, but as a percentage, nothing like the UK.

By the end of spring or early summer everyone in this country will have a vaccine (atleast 1 of the 3) available to them.

So why wouldn't cruising be back to full speed by then? If cruise lines want to force proof of vaccination before going that's perfectly fine with me.

Booking in November of 2021 for sure and maybe another in September of 2021 depending on what happens in the next few months.

How shall they handle people who haven't been able to get the vaccination yet if the cruiseline require it? If for example every citizen in a country within the European Union have been able to get vaccination in time but it has been delayed for some people in the US. Will nonvaccinated Americans get their money back?

It's easy to say that people have a choice but if the vaccine is delayed someone may not be able to get the vaccination in time even if they want to.

The authorities here say that everyone will get their vaccination before next summer so it should be okay to book a cruise in July if vaccinations are required but what if the vaccines are delayed here? What will happen then?

I know that noone has an answer yet.

Surely only people at risk, or in specific professions  will be immunised first. Then everyone else, in order of need.

I'm hoping you're not suggesting that people can jump the queue by paying for the vaccine?

Plus, of course, everyone will need to be immunised every 6 months, so in reality, an individual will require 4 injections a year (because you need 2 injections 3 weeks apart for immunity). Not sure if the US public health care system is up to that, although I hope I'm wrong.

Your time table is pure fantasy.

Nobody has a real answer to those questions but my best guess would be that cruise lines will require a vaccination to board the ships.

I don't think cruise lines will have a choice but to refund a person if they won't allow them onboard.

I'm not gonna get into the fearmongering of what if vaccinations are delayed yadda yadda. Every single medical expert that the media has put on tv up until this time told us vaccines would take years to develop but here we are with 3 already.. So if anything I would expect everyone to have a vaccine available to them sooner rather than later.
