from Bequia looking to kingstown St Vincent . Lots of ash in the air. The big thing is going to be clean water. Everyone is filling barrels with water. No cdc here. Vaccine not needed to evacuate.Kingstown is not in the red zone. The volcano is about a 1 1/2  hour drive from kingstown.

There has been a second explosion around 2 p.m.

- and I'm hearing of a third?

Whatever.. Serenade of the Seas is now docked at Kingstown

with Celebrity Reflection not far offshore.

Carnival Paradise stands by, a bit further out there.

Here in Barbados, we might get an ash-fall later (as usually happens)

but who knows which way the upper level winds will take it!

Volcanic ash can definitely be a problem in the Islands. We were at a conference on St. Thomas many years ago, when Montserrat volcano erupted. Ash in sky was so bad that air traffic from St Thomas was cancelled for 2 days, which meant extra hotel days to pay for us. At least St. Thomas is a beautiful island to be stranded on!

In the early Spring of 1996 we were on the island of St. Lucia when the Montserrat volcano blew and when flying home our aircraft passed over the island. The shot below was taken from plus 30,000 feet.

Saw a post on twitter that the lava dome has now reached the top of the crater and they are evacuating people on the leeward side... The poster noted that RCL was sending a ship to help evacuate.. it looks like Serenade of the Seas is on its way there.  Hope this is only a temporary situation.... but it is nice to see RCL jump in to help 2044640716_ScreenShot2021-04-08at6_56_19PM.thumb.png.72f7d8619e3f22acac8230ef87817371.png

Only those who have been vaccinated.  What about children who aren't even eligible?  Hope they will not be excluded.

According to marinetraffic.com Serenade ots is there now.  Looks like a celebrity ship has left the area and heading back to barbados, hopefully with evacuees on board.

When one looks at the marine traffic map, it's like St. Vincent is a "ship magnet".

A few hours later

the ash cloud makes its way Eastward on upper level air currents

and we expect some ash fall here in Barbados tonight?

I took a short video to show what it looks like from South Coast Barbados

3 ships on station in St. Vincent

with Serenade docked at Kingstown -others offshore waiting..

Thanks for the video and please stay safe. I have heard that the ash can cause respiratory problems.

aplmac;   you have some great info.  Your pictures, and your charting;  all of this helps us visualize what is going on on the island and surrounding areas.  Thank you very much for providing this.

Is it likely the ash cloud will impact air travel

and hinder moving relief assets into the area?

Funny you should mention moving relief supplies in
because while I was standing there making the movie seen above

I noticed the RSS plane coming back in -presumably from St. Vincent.

A lot of the ash is high up 30-40,000 ft?

(but must fall back to earth some time, some place)

As long as they stay low, they'll likely avoid most of it, if not all -
depending on what direction they make their approach to the island.

That would be my guess, but I'm no expert on the matter.

I know the Regional Security System fly-boys

are "creative aviators" shall we say ....and I've heard a few stories

- they'll figure it out, they'll find windows of opportunity

to sneak in and back out again.

They fly METROs

like this one, just finished vaccine distribution duties down the islands.

I think that would be Celebrity Reflection.

Yes, Serenade is just offshore the North end of St. Lucia

and is now pointed in a direction

that might indicate she is looking to port at Castries??

And here she is entering the Castries inlet...

Did you notice if Reflection and the two Carnival ships have received any passengers yet? I notice that Serenade did not depart until around 10pm... I assume ash fall might have impacted speed of loading passengers...perhaps covid vaccine issues as well....  but I did not notice the other ships docking.. they could have picked up passengers using tenders...so that is possible
