Rare kazu Posted July 13, 2021 #1 Share Posted July 13, 2021 The writing has been on the wall for a while but it is now officially happening. https://financialpost.com/pmn/business-pmn/italy-bans-cruise-liners-from-venice-after-years-of-hesitation
KirkNC Posted July 13, 2021 #2 Share Posted July 13, 2021 Well I am glad we have spent so much time there already. I don’t really have any interest in the alternative ports and then buses or trains for a day trip there.
Cruising-along Posted July 13, 2021 #3 Share Posted July 13, 2021 Thank you Jacqui. Our Sept-Oct. itinerary has us in Venice twice and ending there...waiting to hear what will happen now.
iancal Posted July 13, 2021 #4 Share Posted July 13, 2021 (edited) It really should have been done years ago after the larger cruise ship started to arrive. Edited July 13, 2021 by iancal
colonialinnkeeper Posted July 13, 2021 #5 Share Posted July 13, 2021 Yes, Jacqui, it was bound to happen. Venice and its fragile infra-structure cannot support large numbers of huge ships and that number of visitors ongoing. These mostly very large ships put huge strain on the buildings, infrastructure, pilings and the narrow Giudecca canal. We will gladly fly into Venice to visit and then go to the port nearby to pick up the ship. I would like our children and future generations to be able to visit this beautiful and magical place and to see it without accerlerated degredation.

Rare Mary229 Posted July 13, 2021 #7 Share Posted July 13, 2021 Thanks for sharing. Good for Italy and better for Venice

I don’t think Venice’s big industrial port is ready yet to handle cruise ships. That will eventually be where the ships will have to go IIRC.

We were booked on the Greece Cruise ending in Venice on the 12th but cancelled after finding out our Nephew is getting Married (postponed twice due to Covid). We switched over to AK because we were so anxious to get back Onboard.
Sir PMP Posted July 13, 2021 #10 Share Posted July 13, 2021 Great, Dubrovnik will be next, no place to go to for the big ships..

canadianbear Posted July 13, 2021 #13 Share Posted July 13, 2021 Crazy times. More & more looking like we will cancel our 27 day cruise as it leaves from Venice. So many signs that this is not to be for us. Changed our ship 3X and more stuff.

La Venezia: Uniworld Riverboat. As for alternate ports, the cruise ships are using Ravenna and Trieste.
Rare albingirl Posted July 13, 2021 #16 Share Posted July 13, 2021 This changes things for many of us. We've had 3 cruises canceled, had ship switches, and now this. We will see what's next.

Ravenna is worth exploring all on it’s own IMO. Beautiful mosaics.

Considering the Maghera is also located in the Venice Lagoon, not sure if it is a suitable port, or if it will need to be a port actually outside of the Venice Lagoon. bennybear Posted July 13, 2021 #22 Share Posted July 13, 2021 So maybe that recent post about HAL showing Ravenna instead of Venice, was preplanning. here goes another change for next year, new ship, new embarkation, maybe a whole new cruise? Rare VMax1700 Posted July 13, 2021 #24 Share Posted July 13, 2021 At least Trieste has a train service to/ from Venice. I don't think Ravenna is as accessible?
bennybear Posted July 13, 2021 #25 Share Posted July 13, 2021 Not sure, We drove to Ravenna last time we were there, Probably would use a car service. Maybe fly into Bologna? It’s probably my fault as I booked flights to Venice yesterday.
