Rome to Civitavecchia?

What is the best way to get from the airport in Rome to the port in Civitevecchia ? Sailing on a Windstar cruise in October 2021.

By train.

We were a party of eight so pre booked a minibus to pick us up and return us from Rome. Journey is 1.5-2 hours. We then took a hop on/off bus around Rome before having a meal (quite slow service even though restaurant quite high end) and meeting minibus.  Lots of sitting down but saw quite a lot.

I take the train from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia, it takes 1h10min - getting from the station to the cruise port can be difficult by taxi/bus if there are many travelers to the cruise.  It is a 10-minute walk from the station to the port. Shuttle bus inside port.

‘Best’ means different things to different people. Cheapest is the train. That’s what we took and would do again. Only downside is it have to go on their schedule and make your way from the stop in civitevecchia. You can also book private transportation. I’ve not used them but many people use ‘Rome in limo’

I agree "best" is a very vague term. How many of you are there? Budget? Mobility? 

 

If not our private chopper, we would book Rome in Limo.

The “best” way is to land at the airport at least one day before boarding date, and spend a day (preferably more) in Rome before going to Civita Vecchia.    The Leonardo Express is the best way to get from the airport to Rome, and a hired car or van (perhaps Rome in Limo) is the best way to get to the ship - it costs more than the train to the port but it cuts out a lot of hassle with bags between modes of transportation.  We have talked it up on the roll call and lined up a few others to share a van - which winds up costing very little more than public transport.

Whether staying in Rome or arriving "morning of", we have always hired a car (or van if there are many of us).  We just find it very convenient.

"Best" is a qualitative judgement, it depends on what criteria are important to you for this decision.  Are you looking for easiest/most convenient?  Lowest cost? Fastest?

 

There are options from very low cost public transportation that takes a lot of time and some (sometimes considerable) effort, to expensive door-to-door car services with options in between.

We have used Bob's Limo Rome several times.  New van, great drivers that speak English.  Airport to cruise ship luggage drop off about $75 for two in a shared van..They also have transports that make a few stops for sightseeing along the way.

We are planning on going into Rome 2 or 3 days early prior to our cruise.

 

Is it possible/preferable to take an airport shuttle back to the airport to pick up the NCL transfer to Civitavecchia? 

 

Not sure if we are pushing our luck, but we have booked an early morning tour (starts at 8:30am) at the Vatican on the day our cruise departs.

While it's possible, I would not say it is preferable to go back to the airport to get the NCL shuttle. The airport is not in the same direction as the port. 

 

With an early morning tour, I'd suggest your best bet is to book a private transfer to the port from your hotel. You can arrange to meet them there after your tour ends. 

 

What time does the tour end, and what time is your ship scheduled to depart?

Well, our tour was supposed to start at 7:30am but because of Covid, it has been rescheduled to start at 8:30am - and we can end it at any time.

 

The ship departs at 5:00pm

How far is your hotel from the Vatican?  If you don't have tons of luggage you could bring it with you to the museums and check it there during your tour, that would save you the time required to return to your hotel before heading to the port.

We are staying at the Residenza Farnese - it is approx. 3 km from the Vatican.

 

We will probably leave our luggage at the hotel and go back to pick it up.

We’ve stayed there and walked to the Vatican and back. But it is a LONG walk,   Would suggest they call a taxi for you.

As I recall, the last time we did it the FCO ticket agent had us change trains in Roma Ostiense, a suburban stop.  It was less crowded, we avoided Termini, and it was the fastest route at that particular time of day.

 

Easy for us as we only have one bag each.
