Premium Beverage Pkg - refunds for shortages

When no premium wines by the glass are available shouldn't we receive a refund of the difference between the classic wine received and the premium wine for which we paid.  Celebrity would certainly charge us the difference if it was the other way around.  We paid for classic and received a premium wine.

Thoughts.

Wait, you paid for classic and received premium?!  If so, shouldn’t you paying Celebrity?

Nope, paid for premium and being told only classic wines are available.

Was just referencing the current policy of Celebrity that if you paid for Classic and then ordered a premium wine they charge you the difference.

Therefore it seems the reverse happening should have Celebrity giving me a credit of the difference.

First think you for a good chuckle.  We often have received a "premium" priced wine with our classic package.

To clarify - you are saying there was NO wine on board priced at over $9 a glass that Celebrity would pour using your premium package?  Or do you really mean you wanted a specific wine which was out of stock?  Very different.

As has been said over and over and over; today people need to be flexible when they travel or best to not travel.

We upgrade for the Martini Bar, World Class Bar, Baileys and the wines and champagne.  We have encountered some of our preferred wines & champagne not being available but have always had a good substitute.  We have done 5 cruises since the restart and have experienced shortages of various wines and liquors but we have never gone thirsty.

Ok but your last sentence reads, we paid for classic but received premium

Waiting to get off Summit. I upgraded prior to the cruise. No Decoy Cab, no Villa Maria SB from day 1.  All bars but casino ran out of Aperol. DD drinks white zin which was hard to find also. Some nights, no classic Pinot Grigio in MDR and DH was not offered anything else.
We enjoyed the cruise but did find it annoying.

We had a similar issue on the Millennium in March but thankfully the sommelier in Cellar Masters was excellent and provided us with some excellent alternatives.

Disappointing yes, total disaster no.

Just got off this cruise also. Wine definitely was an issue - we gave up asking for any specific wine as they never had it. Alternatives were offered, some okay, many  not. 😬 Not a deal breaker for us, but if you are a total wine aficionado, be prepared for disappointment. No problem getting the premium liquors etc.

Others have not had the problem of no premium wines by the glass.   Which ship and sailing were you on when this was encountered?

We were on the Reflection Transatlantic sailing in April and the wine selection was very poor even in Michaels Club. Premium wine none that I would call, drinkable yes but fair at best. Decoy not one bottle on the ship and this is not an expensive wine but still good if they had any. Gone are the days you could get wine by the glass and even try some great wines with a up charge. If I do not stay in a Suite I would never upgrade too Premium package again. Loved, loved the cruise but not the wine.

We just got off Summit this morning and also sailed in April on the Apex.  We enjoyed both cruises, but we found that wine selections, especially premium wines,  as well as other liquors, were spotty at best, especially on the Summit.  In the dining room, I  never received any of the premium wines that I requested, and did not feel that much effort was made to suggest an equivalent substitute.  We have always upgraded to the premium package, and while we understand supply shortages and are pretty flexible,  I find it irritating that at this time, when we are more likely to be offered a classic selection than a premium choice,  Celebrity has just raised the upgrade price by 40% to $16.80/day.  Overall, our cruises were very good, but I am not happy with that business decision,  and will not do an upgrade in the future.

Did you have zero drinks over the classic package and did you try addressing it on the ship. I would hope that if you told them in the first day or two that they were out of all premium wines they would have made it right. Once you have any drinks over the classic package, you paid for a received service, not sure how they could pro-rate it that some of the drinks you wanted were unavailable. On our sailings we took the advice to wait until we were onboard to upgrade. We figured out pretty quickly that paying the extra per drink was a better deal for us.

Sorry to confuse everyone

we have not sailed yet just upgraded to the premium package for our August cruise on Summit

have been reading many negatives about the premium wine availability especially on Summit

i drink very little but enjoy a great glass of wine with my dinner which is what raised the question for me

Just got off Apex and we went to the Select champagne tasting. The Cellarmaster attended and chatted with guests before the tasting. We did not get to hear everything she said, but she did say that they ran completely out of many wines on the TA, which was just before our sailing. She also talked in generalities about the challenges they were having getting wines. I’m extrapolating a bit, but I was left with the impression it isn’t going to get better soon and may well drag into next year. We are in suites for our next cruise, so upgraded already, but I’m going to watch what cruisers say over the summer and maybe bring a couple of bottles of red onboard for a special dinner.

If I wasn’t upgraded, at this point I wouldn’t, but I would sign up with my sommelier, first night for a wine tasting, then after s/he has sold me the wine tasting and will get credited for it, then I would discuss availability of any favorites. If after that discussion, I still was unclear about whether I wanted to upgrade, I would ask for and pay samples of wines that I would receive if I upgraded. Based on what the cellar master said, we might be see shortages of some very specific wines in local stores before this over.

I also just got off the Summit this am.  On the whole, enjoyed the cruise, but one of the biggest issues I had was the lack of drink selection.  I have 2 main drinks of choice.  Tanqueray Gin and pretty much any Sav Blanc from New Zealand,  I couldn’t find either one anywhere on this cruise.  We upgraded as soon as we got on the ship but soon started to question whether it was worth it.  I always have an Aperol Spritz at lunch, and they ran out of Aperol on like day 8 I think.  Yesterday I ordered one if the MDR for lunch just to see, figuring they would come back and tell me they were out.  NOPE they brought one, but made it with Campari…thinking I wouldn’t taste the difference?   Or notice the slightly more red in color?  It’s more of the deception that bothers me…..just be honest.

Based on this I would cancel your upgrade.  You may find it's less expensive in the long run if they don't have the drinks you want.

With the fairly significant increase in upgrade cost per day, (our upgrade cost for 10 days was $360). going forward for the next several months, I would just pay the difference per drink.  I think you’ll come out on top…..especially if you don’t drink a lot.
