Disease warning

Recommended Posts

I’m assuming that everyone due to sail this weekend received the legionella warning. I received it about 4:00 pm today.  It stated that 3 recent passengers have contracted the illness. They didn’t say exactly when this happened which is concerning. Was it 1 or 2 or some other cruise? It is concerning because if this finding is last cruise or couple cruises…then all new cruisers embarking on Sunday will be more exposed than if it is a month ago. 😳 As a healthy 78yr old…no Covid after 6 post Covid cruises….I don’t know how I feel about this and don’t know how to decide husband and my exposure possibility.

Any ideas from any medical minds out there?

There's an earlier thread on this here...

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2995503-email-from-x-re-legionella/#comment-67029564

The cases were passengers on the Ascent in January. They've not put out any additional information, but they've also not increased the numbers or reported any additional cases since the first reports (it went from 2 to 3, but no reports of more). I've also not seen any reports of an epidemiological investigation to determine where the passengers were exposed; it's as likely as not that it wasn't on the ship. If the ship were the ONLY thing they had in common, that would increase the odds of a problem on the ship, but the absence of further reported cases would suggest the risk is pretty low. The previous thread goes through a lot of the reality of legionella, and one poster included the link to the CDC's information page on the bacteria. I'm going to guess they've upped the sanitation and disinfection out of an abundance of caution, but probably in ways we'd never see.

Is it across the entire fleet of ships or ship specific?

We boarded the Edge today and no notification legionella or any other health issue.  So does not appear to be fleet wide.

It would be contained to a single ship (if it was on the ship) and related to warm water in systems. The bacteria is in the water.

You can get Legionnaires' disease from:

  • air conditioning systems
  • humidifiers
  • spa pools and hot tubs
  • taps and showers that are not used often (months)

Not from:

  • drinking water that contains the bacteria
  • other people with the infection

Most people make a full recovery.

Suggest you contact your own personal medical professional.  Most here are not, though some just play one on the internet.

Please don't fall into the fear porn.  It is the flu, the typical yearly flu that hits during winter, we are nearly getting out of it as spring moves in.  You have the same risk of getting it going to the mall, grocery store, restaurant, etc.  Go with precautions, take some airborne a couple days earlier with vitamin c, maybe a multi vitamin and take that each day.  This will make you feel better, its always good to take these things even without an outbreak.  Go and have a good time.   Life is too short be happy.

Legionnaires disease is not the flu.  The flu is a virus and Legionnaires is caused by bacteria and causes pneumonia and can be contracted by vapor in showers, spas or A/C ventilation. I'm not sure Celebrity is in the business of fear porn but informing passengers of potential risks is their job.

I feel like this year it was bad. I had both covid booster and flu shot and I came off my cruise really sick - considering out of 4 this was the first time I got sick its good numbers but it was bad. Took quite a while to recover.

Ok ..sorry about mentioning the exact ship…yes it is the Ascent…only concerning as it’s a new ship with out many years to build up air conditioning etc germs. Was wondering if out break was new or a few months ago. As it’s 1 day to go….guess we will keep our fingers crossed. We have had every shot available for Covid, pneumonia, etc….so 🤞🏼🤞🏼 . Thanks for all thoughts!

on the orig thread, I think someone said they were cleaning out shower heads..but can't exactly recall or locate the source right now..

Go with a positive attitude..No doubt ship has done all it can to be healthier!  Ascent is a great ship..

It's interesting (and concerning) that they are still advising people of this.  My understanding is that the people in question sailed in January.  We sailed Ascent in early March and never got an email warning.  You would think by now they would have figured out if it was actually the ship.  If there were no further cases reported I would think it was caused by something else.  FWIW we did not get sick on our cruise.

We disembarked Ascent last Sunday. On deck 7 often noticed a sewage smell which was odd. On the Saturday, Dh’s voice deepened which is a sign of “something “.  We are up todate with all vaccines but know viruses mutate, even the cold virus. we did notice as week went by, numbers of passengers coughing increased. We are glad we travel with antibiotics as DH has had a rough week once home.  Guess we have to realize communal communities increase risks of getting something. As for what is going onboard, I don t but we had the same letter before we sailed

We sailed on the silhoutte in Dec. My husband and I both got very sick. Horrible body aches and respiratory symptoms shortness of breath and coughing.  Came on very fast. I was tested and flu and Covid both negative. I ended up with bacterial pneumonia. I was thinking some new virus. Never had body pain that bad before.

I'm sorry that happened to you, but not sure what that has to do with a legionnaire's warning on Ascent?  With 3,000+ passengers plus crew there are bound to be any number of illnesses onboard at any particular time, especially in the winter. And just as information, if it was bacterial pneumonia then it was caused by bacteria, not by a virus.

I am sorry but Legionnaires disease has been around since 1976 and it is from water, bacteria yes and it is not contagious.  Nothing to worry about.

it is NOT the flu!    Please dont spread misinformation.

Legionella bacteria is the cause of Legionnaires disease which can be fatal to some (as can flu)
