Cruise Lines pressuring CDC to open cruising by July

Recommended Posts

Just reported on CNBC:

The trade group for the world’s biggest cruise lines on Wednesday called on the CDC to allow a phased-in resumption of sailings from U.S. ports in early July, CNBC’s Seema Mody reports.

It’s been more than a year cruise lines suspended all U.S. sailings due to Covid.

The Cruise Lines International Association said its timeframe matches up with President Joe Biden’s goal for when the U.S. will be “closer to normal.”

With hotels, casinos and airlines starting to see a recovery in bookings since their pandemic lows, most cruise ships remain idle.

Shortly after CLIA asked the CDC to lift the Conditional Sail Order and to allow for a phased in approached to cruises restarting, the CDC said that the order limiting cruises will stay in effect until November 1, 2021.

The CDC has updated their guidance for cruise ships and the Conditional Sail Order is now in effect until the earliest of:

  • The expiration of the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ declaration that COVID-19 constitutes a public health emergency,
  • The CDC Director rescinds or modifies the order based on specific public health or other considerations, or
  • November 1, 2021

Here is the CLIA statement.

Cruise Lines International Association, the main lobbying group for cruise companies including Carnival, issued a statement earlier Wednesday calling for the CDC to drop the order and agree to let U.S. sailings resume by July.

But in an emailed response to questions, the CDC said the so-called Framework for Conditional Sailing Order, or CSO, remains in effect.

“Returning to passenger cruising is a phased approach to mitigate the risk of spreading Covid-19,” the CDC said. “Details for the next phase of the CSO are currently under interagency review.”

They want the CDC to give up on the CSO and CDC says forget it.

Forget cruising from US ports this summer.

Ah, the "check is in the mail" response

I watched some of that Port Canaveral Round Table, the Governor was definitely pushing in favor of letting the cruise ships sail!

WHY does Florida want us to sail?

Because its the best thing for the people?

or it's the best thing for the State coffers and the politicians campaign coffers?

Follow the money!

Sometimes things can have more than one reason.

The last line is so true! “If you keep this No Sail Order in place, Americans are still going to be taking cruises, they are just going to be taking them from the Bahamas or Bermuda.” I sure will!

Yes!  As a Floridian, we want the revenue.
We don’t have a state tax.
Many of Our restaurants, hotels and small mom and pop places rely on the cruise industry. Thousands of jobs in Florida rely on the cruise industry.

Cruise lines say it's safe to set sail. Health experts aren't convinced.

Yet the experts don’t say anything about what the lower numbers are. Just based on their thinking, nothing they’ve seen even with safe sailings around the world. Our schools weren’t allowed to open if the cases were above 50 per 100,000 people because it’s unsafe. Then over a month ago, it’s safe to open if it’s less than 350 per 100,000. Not that anything had changed at the time.

How could he allow the cruise ships to sail when the CDC announced today a “possible” surge coming and they also suggested today a double mask mandate (I guess we now know why Dr Flipflop had on two masks even after vaccinated). Remember though, we can expect to have a small family gathering outdoors for 4th of July.

Still looking for those surges that never occurred. I heard Michigan and NJ are having big spikes. Are they not in somewhat Covid restricted States?
