Thank you for critiquing my description of my husband's work attire. 🙄.  If you want to talk socio economics, I would note that many blue collar people make a hell of a lot more cash then some white collar peeps. I am talking about CLOTHES!  Stop this silliness.

Thanks

Boy, you just can’t stop digging that hole, can you? Bringing up more unnecessary socio economic “facts”

This picture shows up frequently on this website.  While I don't doubt it's a genuine picture, it's only a small sliver of that evening's guests entering the MDR -- and it's not a good representation of how the average cruiser dresses on "formal night".

What I've seen lately on most nights in the MDR:

- The majority of men wear nice jeans or khakis with a button-down or polo shirt.  A smattering of adult men wear shorts.

- The majority of women wear sundresses or dressy pants and tops.

Formal nights are definitely less casual than in past years, but here's what's average:

- Tuxedos are gone.

- About 30% of guests dress up ... men in suits, ladies in cocktail dresses, some of them long.

- The majority of guests look just like they do on other nights ... jeans, khakis, sundresses.

- A few people ignore social norms and wear shorts to "formal night", but they are mostly teenagers.

Your observations are only a "small sliver" of the evening guests too.  Were you at both early and late seating tallying what people were wearing?  Did you go to all levels of the MDR to get your information?  What about MTD?

So, using your rationale, since I am white collar and dress up every single day, I should take this opportunity to dress a little more casual and relax and enjoy myself.

This is 100% my husband's POV. He is an attorney, so the last thing he wants to do on vacation is dress like the office or court.

When was your last RCI cruise? I have been on 9 RCI cruises this year (number 10 is this coming Saturday). Without exception, in both the MDR and speciality restaurants at night, I see a significant number of men wearing shorts every night of the cruise. It has been a long time (like a decade if not longer) since I would consider dinner in the MDR an “event”. The cruise industry today is nothing like the cruise industry of the past.

Depends on what cruise line you're sailing on!!!

I've seen enough people in the dining room in both traditional and MTD to recognize that this picture isn't typical of how people dress for dinner.  No tallying necessary.

Not as much as I can wearing shorts, especially in the Caribbean in the summer time

During last 20 years we sailed 35+ times to Caribbeans, about 15  times to Bahamas and Bermuda. We sail with my husband. It is our lifestyle choice.  Do you think we do not know something about hot destinations and relaxation? LOL.

I can write books about it.

Casual pants/jeans for 1 hour a day absolutely do not prevent relaxation.

And there you have it.

It's not about "what's so hard wearing pants????", it's about everyone has a different way they wish to enjoy their cruise.  As long as Royal allows shorts in the MDR at dinner (and like it or not, they do), there will be shorts in the MDR at dinner. Whether it's one person wearing shorts or 200 doesn't matter in the least.  And, funny enough, the folks (even some on here who have admitted it) with delusions of superiority in their dress end up in the same place as the folks they look down on.

I've said this many times before on here...my mom and dad went on 40 cruises, give or take.  35 of them with Royal.  My dad wore his tux just about every night, even on casual nights.  My seamstress aunt made him about 20-25 different ties/cummerbunds, in so many colors and patterns he always had something for the night's theme.  It became a "what's he going to wear tonight?" game for their tablemates.  He loved to dress up, and good for him.

Others wear shorts every night.  And good for them.

Royal has given us all choices on how to dress (no matter how everyone on CC interprets the vagueness of the "dress code"), and everyone chooses their own way.

Likewise, seeing somebody in shorts for an hour should not prevent relaxation.

And realistically, you don't even see the shorts for an hour, you see them for a minute as they walk by.  It's your choice to let it stick in your craw like this.  Kind of sad really....

How about instead of of us debating this topic, you wear what you want to and I will wear what I want to, I really wished people could accept the fact that people have different thoughts about this. I would not think of telling people what to wear, unless they have told me what to wear or where I should go to eat

Sail the larger ships and you will see that your information is way off.

Bottom line- if they were serving even decent food, had quality service, and it was more of an event, I would dress up. I did in the decades past. As somebody else said, it’s maybe a TGI Fridays or Applebees quality dinner, so that’s the effort they’re getting. I’ll wear shorts and a golf shirt.

Ridiculous comparison.

If you want to pretend that people still dress up for dinner like they’re on the Titanic, then be my guest.

Since dinner is only 1-2 hours each evening, you could wear a single pair of pants every night for a week.

Yes, so much better for someone to wear the same smelly, tattered pair of jeans every night to dinner for a week rather than some expensive shorts from Hugo Boss or Tommy Bahama. We’re all so tired of people believing they’re the arbiter of social etiquette and telling others how they should dress when they’re on vacation.

With such unsolicited advice you do not strike me as a person who accepts different opinions.

As for different opinions... we took multiple cruises with 8 lines and figured out line that works the best for us. Minimum, maximum standards. We do not have high demands, but there is a bare minimum.

Also I doubt you are completely truthful. You won't be comfortable with everything that people might want to wear. But as Overton window widens you will get the same proposition.

You do realize you posted on an RCI message board, right?

Yes I do. That's why, with the exception of our July Oasis sailing booked specifically to sail with our Daughter and Familiy, our next 3 cruises are booked on a different cruise line. Diamond status is no longer an encentice to book with RCI!!!

P.S. I would named the other line but that would just open up another "pandora's box of replies".

Perfect...only one more month to justify remaining on an RC thread, and then off to enjoy whatever line you have chosen.  Sincerely hope you enjoy each/every cruise...what it's all about.

I really don’t like to dress up but I can and will  make comments when someone makes an effort to look nice, even when I don’t see the need for it. I will even make a comment when a young lady comes into the mdr looking like a million dollars when her partner comes in with worn out clothes and a ballcap on backwards. .I just don’t let it bother me, it doesn’t affect my dining experience in any way.

Or the guy entering the MDR looking like a million dollars escorting his partner wearing her daisy dukes and a halter top. Just saying...

So much irony here.

As far as thinking you can impose "high demands", or even a "bare minimum" of demands on other passengers, good luck with that. 🤣

 1. Wearing simple pants is not dressing up.

  2. I understand shorts do not bother you. Can you honestly say that NOTHING will bother you. Nothing nothing? Strings? Nude?

People who like last three outfits also think that people in designer shorts are dressing up.
