bonsai3s Posted August 14, 2017 #26 Share Posted August 14, 2017 You could buy liquor on board and bring it back to your cabin to use during the cruise? What else do you remember? I remember being able to hit golf balls from the back of the ship. :)
sail7seas Posted August 14, 2017 #27 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember being able to hit golf balls from the back of the ship. :) I remember guests throwing streamers when the ship sailed.
SbbquilterUT Posted August 14, 2017 #28 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember when guest could come on board for a party and then depart before sailing. And the streamers during sail away.
DirtyDawg Posted August 14, 2017 #29 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember when I wanted to call the office while in a port I'd have to find a phone booth. Times change, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.
marco Posted August 14, 2017 #30 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember when on sailing day, the reception desk was full of bon voyage gifts to be delivered to cabins. Flowers, fruit baskets, and yes...bottles of liquor. And yep...some things DON'T change for the better.
leaveitallbehind Posted August 14, 2017 #31 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember bringing a case of beer on board on RCI in plain site and checking it through security and taking it to our room. Had the cab stop on the way to the ship from the airport in San Juan more than once. Yes - it used to be allowed!
jocap Posted August 14, 2017 #32 Share Posted August 14, 2017 The line we travel on the most, P&O, allows you to take drink- both wine and spirits- on board, and from every port visited also... and yes, we have the chocolates... but not as many towel animals these days .. :)
GUT2407 Posted August 14, 2017 #33 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember being escorted to my cabin by a crew member when boarding.
grammi Posted August 14, 2017 #34 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember when I wore panty hose every night to the dining room, even in the Caribbean.:')
Rare Essiesmom Posted August 14, 2017 #35 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember when lunch and dinner were assigned seating, only breakfast was open seating. There was no buffet. Midnight buffet several nights, but not an elaborate spread. It was outside on the promenade deck, cold cuts and fruit. There were not balconies. Not all cabins had their own bath. Everything was cash, you didn't run an account. And there was no Diamonds International. EM
navybankerteacher Posted August 14, 2017 #36 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember chocolates on the pillow at turn down and towel animals every night. Erika I remember these from our February 2027 HAL cruise.
navybankerteacher Posted August 14, 2017 #37 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I recall -just a few years ago - when HAL permitted you to bring unlimited wine aboard - with no corkage fee - to drink in your cabin-- and until 2014 there used to be fresh squeezed orange juice in the Lido. truffles2 Posted August 14, 2017 #38 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember when you could combine the C&A discount, state resident discount, senior discount, balcony discount, and stockholder discount....and if the price went down before sailing, you could gain a refund. There were all the other things that people have mentioned....such as midnight buffet, chocolates on pillow, returning pax gift (hat, totebag, etc.) and they still paid a dividend to stockholders! What the #@!! happened?

NLH Arizona Posted August 14, 2017 #41 Share Posted August 14, 2017 I remember being escorted to my cabin upon embarkation, skeet shooting and golf off the ship, no balconies, no buffet for dinner, crystal glasses or vase upon my return home, formal nights where everyone dressed formally (not cocktail or everyday wear) and I remember the bill that came with all of this, it was more than I pay today. OCruisers Posted August 15, 2017 #43 Share Posted August 15, 2017 While we very fondly remember the many good things about the "good old days", some things are better now than back then ..... ~ No cabin safes so valuables had to be taken to the Purser's Deck to get a safety deposit there. ~ Real keys for our cabin. ~ Cash needed for all purchases (including bar) ~ Very few if any balcony cabins which were suites and VERY expensive Bottom Line : At least some changes have been for the better. :)
ATC cruiser Posted August 15, 2017 #44 Share Posted August 15, 2017 Reasonable? $48 for a 375ml bottle of Gin. Yikes. It's still cheaper than going to a bar to order when I'm waiting for my wife to get ready for dinner. I just need to remember to get some limes. Sea Hag Posted August 15, 2017 #45 Share Posted August 15, 2017 Not my memory; I borrowed it from my husband. He remembers going down to the ship in San Francisco and going aboard to see his grandma off on her Hawaiian cruise.
OCruisers Posted August 15, 2017 #46 Share Posted August 15, 2017 I remember (early-mid 50's) when my grandmother & some retired teacher friends of hers would "book passage for a sailing". :halo:
Sue1260 Posted August 15, 2017 #47 Share Posted August 15, 2017 How many remember skeet shooting off back of boat? DH would spend way to much $$$ doing this.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted August 15, 2017 #48 Share Posted August 15, 2017 I remember: -- "Horse" racing onboard ship -- Dinner chimes -- No dedicated buffet -- No specialty restaurants (well, except for a dedicated pizzeria on Sitmar) -- Dressing for dinner every night -- Tableside preparation in MDR -- No spa -- No art auctions
PROCRUISE Posted August 15, 2017 #49 Share Posted August 15, 2017 Very first cruise with HAL (2006) our "passage tickets," information sheets and very nice luggage tags were received in a nice velvet-like carrying purse.
crystalspin Posted August 15, 2017 #50 Share Posted August 15, 2017 Wow thanks for this Bob. Had no idea they were offering the liquor packages for stateroom consumption. And actually pretty reasonable, too. And only on nine of their ships, go figure.
