Is there any penalty for pier runners?

Another ad opportunity for travel insurance, a good watch, knowing what time you must be aboard and if your delay was due to a non-ship tour.......book a ship's tour because the ship will wait for them.

No penalty by the cruise line for watching your ship leave with you standing on the pier.  Once the lines are dropped and the ship heads to sea there is almost always no turning back for late pax.  It is then their responsibility to get to the next port to meet the ship.  Remember one cannot fly between most nations without a passport.  I have heard of late pax paying a small boat to take them out to the departing ship and being allowed to board as well as hitching a ride on the pilot boat that goes out to get the harbor pilot but the ship does not roll out the carpet so to speak for the late pax.  It can be difficult boarding the ship requiring some athletic skill.

One cruise we left a couple in Curacao and two days later almost left them in St Thomas.  They did not seem to learn the first time.  Several times we have left pax in Cozumel who partied too much and lost track of time.

Returning from a ship tour ofBerlin on a train that pulled up on the pier next to the ship , we saw the balcony  lights all lit and filled with cabin stewards waving  towels  shouting   Where were you,we  missed you ? Dinner  is ready. Great experience  for us returning passengers .

Travel Insurance will not pay for the cost of missing the ship when its due to the stupidity of the cruiser!   The reality of many cruise ship tours is that those of us who never take those excursions save enough money to easily pay for catching the ship....with a lot of dollars left over :).  In over forty years of extensive cruising we have only witnessed 2 passengers missing a ship (kind of like the video of the latest incident).   They were two ladies that apparently decided to do some last minute shopping and we could see them walking quickly towards the ship (with lots of shopping bags) as we pulled away from the pier.  The sound of applause could be heard from many balconies.  In turned out that their husbands (the couples were traveling together) had returned to the ship after warning their wives not to be late.   Those ladies were truly the laughing stock of the ship...including from their own husbands...and yes, they did catch up 2 days later at the next port.

And we actually know of another couple who did miss the ship in Civitavecchia, even thought they were on a ship's excursion to Rome.  This couple failed to show-up at the meeting point (they had some free time in Rome) to catch their bus back to the port. The tour guide delayed the group's departure for over 30 minutes but finally had to return to the ship.  That couple did catch-up to the ship (at their own expense) the following day in Naples.

THAT'S WHY IT'S A BETTER CHOICE TO SELECT AN EXCURSION FROM THE CRUISE LINE.  THEY WILL ALWAYS GET YOU BACK TO THE SHIP ON TIME.  OF COURSE, SHXT HAPPENS BUT, YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE GETTING BACK WITH THE CRUISE SPONCERED EXCURSION.  AS FOR GETTING BACK; IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET TO THE NEXT PORT, FLIGHT, SMALL BOAT, SWIM!

Just to be clear, if you take a cruise line excursion, it does not mean that the ship WILL wait for a late return.  It means they will TRY, but if they have to leave, the cruise line is responsible to get you back to the ship at the next port, or to the final stop to get your belongings.  And to cover all expenses along the way.

Posting in all caps is considered yelling, and is against Cruise Critic rules.

I think if you really dig into the situations involved, you would find almost none of the people who missed their ship are on private excursions. Private tour vendors risk everything if they make you late for your ship. Rather they are on their own. May have alcohol involved.

And, no, cruise line excursions will not always get you back on time. They can be late as well, and the ship will make every effort to wait. But they aren't "always" on time.

We were almost two hours late at a Lombok excursion - one of the first cruise ships to visit Lombok at a day with extremely bad traffic.

I have also been several hours delayed out of Santos,, Brazil due to a late tour.

If the casino action is too tame, wagering a few minutes more of souvenir shopping against the possibility of missing your ship and having to pay to catch up at the next port, or just go home without your luggage, might appeal to the venturesome.  Letting other passengers see you losing your bet (cheering you on - and perhaps place side bets on your chances) provides an unadvertised amenity to your fellow cruisers.

I saw the clip about the couple who tried to stop a ship from leaving the port without them.  I wonder if there is any penalty from the cruise line for pier runners?

Yeah, the penalty is they miss the ship and have to deal with catching up to it at another port or flying home.  Hope they weren't doing a closed-loop cruise with only a birth certificate and ID.  Because then it is an even bigger mess.

And yet many (most?) experienced cruisers will tell you this is terrible advice.

I have wondered when this situation happens and the "stranded" guests lack their passport, what "hoops" must then be gone through to get them to wherever they need to go.  Does the cruise line's Port Agent in that port have any responsibility to assist these people?
