  • I like unpacking once
  • Because I like seeing many different places without having to figure out the logistics of getting from one place to another
  • Because my family, and our different taste buds, can all be happy with the food selection
  • Because my favorite color is Caribbean Blue
  • Because it's hard to find a better vacation value for the money
  • Because I like experiencing a taste of other cultures

 

Why do you cruise??

Why do you cruise??

 All of these same reasons as listed above! 

 

Plus - 

  • For me, there is just a special feeling walking aboard a ship for the first time! I don't get that going into a resort. 
  • We like to travel with larger groups of friends - on a cruise, there is a lot of variety for people. Some want to be very active, some want to be lazy, some like to join activities, ect. We can each do what we want to do and then come together at night for dinner/drinks and share our days. 
  • Love the ability to try new foods and drinks. I was such a picky eater as a teen and into my early 20's. Then I discovered cruising and I really started to branch out cause it was all (mostly) included. 
  • I love getting dressed up for dinner! I don't do that much at home, so it's nice to feel fancy for a week. 
  • Love meeting new people on cruises - some of my best friends are people we met on a cruiseship. 
  • Each cruise is a different experience because of the people/crew you encounter.

I love the answers given so far!

 

A few others:

  • I love relaxing, reading a book, ocean-watching, on my own time, my own schedule... when I take land-based vacations I'm usually completely tied to a schedule- on a cruise, I even do Your Time Dining so I can eat when I want... or not...
  • I love being waited on- someone makes my bed & tidies up my mess, someone serves me my meals.
  • My entertainment is located near to my bed and my restaurant- I don't have to grab a cab from the comedy club or music venue at the end of my night!

I cruise because:

I can unpack and from that moment on it is all about me and relaxing. No laundry, no cooking, no cleaning, no chauffeuring someone somewhere. No decisions to make except what do I want to eat or drink.  I am waited on hand & foot. I can do as much or as little as I want.  My entertainment, my food is a few steps away.  The waves and sound of the ocean puts me to sleep every night.

We love not having to drive to dinner, find a parking space, watch what we're drinking because somebody has to drive afterwards, etc.

 

Similarly, we love getting out of our show and just being able to walk to wherever we want to go next.

 

We also love not knowing or caring what our food or shows cost. It's all paid for.

I cruise because:

 

I don’t have to (but certainly want to) do more than enter my room, turn off my phone, order room service (mostly for free) and let the rest of the world and time not matter for that period.  

 

Less than a week until my 2nd cruise ever.  Still remember from the 1st one 20+ year’s ago thinking I’ve never relaxed more or carried images forward of waking up a 6am, going on deck & watching the small Bahamian islands pass in the distance and the flat blue Caribbean running by like a stream.

  • We like being pampered and waited on.
  • It is one of the few vacations where I don't have to drive.
  • We can be as adventurous and active, or as lazy and relaxed as we want.
  • The Ocean relaxes us more than anything else.
  • I love being able to look out over the open ocean and not see any land. Being completely isolated

Due to a combination of life's circumstances, I (male) couldn't find anyone to go on vacation with in many years, even my past girlfriends.  And cruising is the BEST vacation for that.  I discovered cruising almost by accident in 2012, and fell in love with it.  At the time, I was desperate for a vacation from a REALLY stressful job, and wanted to go where people can't call my cell phone.  (♪♪ "I'm out on a cruise, sipping that booze, you're not gonna reach my telephone." ♪♪)  So a cruise out of range of cell phone towers seemed perfect.  I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread yet, but cruisers are much more welcoming of new people than people at other vacations.  Especially at AI's.  Every time, the people I met really made my cruise.

 

In 2002 or 2003, I had an unnerving experience at an AI in Dominican Republic.  I went with a friend, but we had a falling out mid-trip, so for all intents and purposes, I was solo.  Right away, I noticed the staff acting cold toward me.  While the bartenders and the servers were still friendly, security guards immediately jumped on their walkie-talkies whenever I entered an entertainment venue, like the casino or the nightclub.  Well, later on one night, after sitting in the hotel's nightclub for a while, I was walking back to the room I still shared with my former friend.  Suddenly, a security guard pulls me aside, tells me to follow him, and takes me to an employee-only area.  All I could thnk of is "whiskey-tango-foxtrot?"  That's when he explained to me that he saw four guys were following me closely, and they looked sketchy.  I didn't bother reporting the incident to the local police, because honestly, I didn't trust them to be helpful.

 

I have not gone to an AI ever since.  Not solo, not with someone.  It'll be cruising for me until my health gives out.

I (we) cruise because being on a ship is like a 2nd home.  We now spend 20-25% of our time on cruise ships and DW has actually remarked, as we were walking aboard a cruise ship, "we are home."  As to the reasons, there are so many (including most all mentioned above) but I think that our love of the sea is paramount.  In fact we once joked that we would enjoy a 6 month cruise of sea days.  On some of our long cruises it seems like we almost resent the port days which take us away from our beloved sea day relaxation routine.

This is exactly why we're cruising this winter. I had a terrible issue at work that had me glued to me telephone for the entire winter last year. I missed Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, my own birthday, my husband's birthday, Christmas, New Years and one of my kids' birthdays because I was constantly trying to hold things together at the office by my fingernails. So the kids staged whatever the land-based version of a mutiny is and insisted we go somewhere this year where my phone wouldn't work. Their first suggestion was Antarctica. We compromised on a Panama Canal Cruise. 😉

 

Honestly, though... we're really land-trip, bush-wacking, charging off to get the horizon kinds of people -- but every once in a while, we need a vacation where Mom isn't stressing about where we're going to dinner and how to use public transportation in a script I can't read, and how we're getting to the next hotel. That's when we cruise.

I cruise because:

  • the ocean relaxes me
  • the crew members pamper me
  • there is all kinds of entertainment to enjoy
  • there are all kinds of food to try
  • they take me to exotic places and I only have to unpack once
  • it gives me quality time to spend with DH and my family with no outside interferences
  • it gives me value for my vacation dollar
  • the ocean relaxes me
